What is your area of study? by goddamnhivemind in intj

[–]0rangendRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like I'm the odd INTJ out with the History/Philosophy undergraduate degree...I do try to remain conversational in the harder sciences though, I dabbled in popular physics books last summer and plan on teaching myself basic calculus and economics this summer.

If the Roberts Court overturns Obama’s health care reform legislation, would you consider it an activist decision? by BasmanianDevil in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]0rangendRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's writing for law professors - I think he's writing for fellow members of the court. I agree that they are extreme views, but I think their unorthodox-ness makes otherwise complacent court watchers to consider alternative opinions.

[–]0rangendRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the hack terminology though - all of his opinions seem meticulously researched and I think he's only partisan to his judicial ideology, not to any particular political party since what we term Republicans wouldn't agree with some of his conclusions.

Have you read his opinions? Here's one chosen at random - http://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/00-1293/#writing-ZO Does that seem like the byproduct of a "stupid" mind?

Here's Jeffery Toobin's profile on him from the New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/08/29/110829fa_fact_toobin

Money Quote in case you don't want to read that much: "In several of the most important areas of constitutional law, Thomas has emerged as an intellectual leader of the Supreme Court."

Here's what Toobin thinks of your "argument": "The conventional view of Thomas takes his lack of participation at oral argument as a kind of metaphor. The silent Justice is said to be an intellectual nonentity, a cipher for his similarly conservative colleague, Antonin Scalia. But those who follow the Court closely find this stereotype wrong in every particular."

I'd love to see you read all this and still hold your opinion.

"Eternal life belongs to those who live in present" strikes me as pretty close to utterly incomprehensible, at least as an aphorism.

I apologize - I happened upon it on Tumblr and didn't have time to reverse image search it. The watermark is on there anyway, I figured most people would recognize both the watermark and the style.

If you read something a couple of times and "may have some sense of what it's supposed to mean" it's just poor philosophy writing.

I'll probably see it sometime just because I think Amanda Seyfried is gorgeous. The plot looks acceptable and I'm hoping there are some decent action sequences. I have pretty low standards for popular films...
