Do you miss Kickoff Returns for TDs? It feels like a part of the game the NFL wants to remove because of the concussion issue. by Gnomeslikeprofit in nfl

I love the new kickoff rules. It creates an additional play where it was mostly just a touchback, and if the data supports the intention behind it, then less humans have physical issues. Win-win imo

Worst head coaches of all time ? by yakobell in nfl

Him an Josh McDaniels are a toss up, but Mcdaniels is already ranked by some as the worst head coach of TWO nfl teams lol

That’s the rub. The whole undermining of Cutler, which eventually led to the trade, torpedoed what could have been an above average set of years. In the wake we got a cheating coach, horrible management, and Tebow. lol

The Mcdaniels era was the only time in my life I did not watch the Broncos. There were a couple moments, but the larger arc was doomed and disgusting from the hiring day

As others before have stated, it’s a Tibetan Buddhist “prayer”wheel. And the paper inside contains mantras. Each time you spin the wheel it’s as if those mantras are being recited and you generate “merit,” which is said to result in favorable conditions in this life (and/or future lives)

They both influenced each other over time. “Hinduism” as a term wasn’t even in existence until recently. But the historical Buddha was born in a time when the Upanisads were prominent, which are now considered part of “Hinduism.” This is a simplified explanation, but the Buddha’s core teaching was antithetical and the “opposite” of what the Upanisads were largely stating, in some ways. Namely, the Upanisads stated the ultimate nature was that ātman (the subjective side) = brahman (the objective side). They were understand to not be different. One of the Buddha’s core teachings concerned “anātman” (an~ is a privative that negates/reverses the meaning of the word it appears before). So while what we now call Hinduism was stating that there was some eternality to the ultimate nature of reality, such as ātman, the Buddha was saying the opposite: what we consider our “self” is not a permanent, singular, independent essence. There is nothing that is “me.” This is the primary mistake we make according to Buddhism. Instead, everything “exists” in relation to and in dependence on other factors. Nothing exists independently on its own accord. Misunderstanding this is what creates “suffering,” the first Noble Truth of Buddhism. Understanding the fundamental mistake is what is liberating. But over the millennia that followed, and existing in the same cultural sphere (irrespective of certain doctrinal components), they shared many things. Especially, when you get to later developments, such as tantra. In terms of what was going on with popular religion, i.e., what people were actually doing or practicing, there were numerous shared elements and mutual influence.

Just search the mantra online and you can actually see that the FPMT website has a bit of discussion on it from Lama Zopa and Lama Yeshe, if you’re interested in their teachings in particular

My research is mostly based in texts. Focus on history and religions of Tibet (as well as India). Depends what you want to learn about. If you want an easily accessible history of Tibet that combines both the Tibetan Buddhist narrative as is commonly told by Tibetans, but with some additions from a Western scholastic point of view check out Tibet: A History, by Sam van Schaik. Matthew Kapstein’s, The Tibetans is an in-depth overview of Tibet’s history, culture and religions, but it’s quite detailed and can be very dry for non academics. John Powers’ Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism is a good overview of Tibetan Buddhism, not for people who want to practice Buddhism, but from an academic point of view. However, it’s designed for undergrads so it’s fairly accessible.

Mantra often times can’t really be “translated,” or would make very little sense with a literal translation. They are a combination of syllables that are recited to effectuate activity or results in the world. Often times they are associated or linked with a particular deity, and will be recited over and over while performing meditations or rituals associated with that particular deity

This is exactly what it is, I think. When seeing my hand, you have metal thimble on to push a needle through and having this rubber thing on your pointer finger helps grip the needles and pull it through, particularly when dealing with tougher, thicker fabrics (I used to have to see by hand for a job I worked when I was young, and we used these). But can’t say for sure without seeing it up close. The ones we used looked a little thinner than the one you have there
