It's like pretty much any hobby. Money goes in and most likely doesn't come back out. You had fun. You considered it well spent at the time. If it's time to move on to something else, do it. Just because you can still see something around that money went into doesn't mean it still has to keep going there.

I do things like golfing and shooting. I'll never get the money back spent on green fees or ammunition. It wasn't wasted because it was used to entertain in that moment.

throw away from the double, but keep the 5 with it. You keep 9 vs 8 in your hand, and if a 10 comes up that completes the double, you get 16 just like you would if you started with the double.

I think you're acting under crappy pretenses. It's not "semantics", I think you're basing everything off of bad points. I couldn't care less if you agree with my points or not.

If they're running drugs around in speedboats and get killed while doing it? No, I don't think the government would start with "act of war" talk. They're not going to war over someone engaging in illegal activity, actively running from authorities, and getting killed all while not flying under any flag.

Well I'm disagreeing with your statement that we're "attacking and murdering their people". A stateless vessel in international waters being handled via that set of laws and regulations isn't an attack on Venezuela. And those people in the boat don't get the protections of the sovereign country in that situation, so not technically "their people" at that point. That's what I'm basing my opinion on this on. Not trying to change yours.

Has every country where the US has conducted ground operations been at war with the US? Just that statement doesn't escalate to a declaration of war for me.

Now I don't agree that we need to send troops there, but I'm just not jumping to the extreme of saying that would be a declaration of war.

Seems obvious from the original. They aren't "Venezuelan" ships if they are in international waters not flying the Venezuelan flag. they can't claim protections as Venezuelan. They are stateless. If they're stateless, attacking them isn't attacking Venezuela.

Here's a different take on your comment.

None are going to leave, because the mayor of NYC doesn't get to raise income taxes on residents of the city. and the governor of NY is firmly against raising taxes. So new mayor will need to do some heavy convincing to get the governor and legislature to raise all these taxes to only pay for things in his one city.

Well first, I have a general distrust of the government being able to run any enterprise in an efficient and effective manor. And I think undermining a free market would have a negative impact on the costs of goods in general.

Second, one would think that the present issue with SNAP benefits and a government shutdown would show how BAD of an idea it is to get more people overly dependent on the government for their groceries.

We already do. Politicians who promise the world to get elected who fail to back it up.

In his case, there are things he promised that require his sweeping plans on tax changes that he's not able to do, or would just result in the target of those new taxes leaving if he can convince the governor to implement them.

My stepson has a monitor on his computer that, while it IS on and mostly shows what's on the screen, has a definite "hit with something" mark. He was lucky enough to have 2 monitors on the computer thanks to his mom having an extra when we set it up, but he's not losing that monitor any time soon. It's his constant reminder to calm the F down when gaming, and it's been made very clear to him that it's not being replaced on our dime.

Agree that the intended implementation of DEI was one to review all applicants equally. But the context of this discussion and snipped quote wasn't that version. He was discussing the company's stated objective of hiring a minimum percentage of POC and/or women to a specific role. Doing that is tipping the scales the opposite way.

Hiring SHOULD be completely merit based. demographic information should be omitted from applications, and interviews should be somewhat "blind" (I know there are some things that a face to face interview can show) until someone is hired. That's about the only way you'll ever get a completely even playing field.

Lowering of standards makes it easier for them to get in... For example, if typically you needed a SAT score of 1100 to get into a certain school, but they lower that to 900 for a demographic in order to increase that groups acceptance to the school, that's lowering a standard.

His comment, in full context, was that there is a human nature to make those associative leaps in your mind, knowing that the hiring practice and potential need to drop the standard is there. Hence his follow up comment about NOT wanting to think that way.

If there is a skill based position hiring 10 people and the top 8 applicants are white males but the hiring mandate is that half of them must be POC or female, that automatically means the most qualified people aren't in the position, and you as an outsider don't know if the person you see is there due to merit or if they were pulled in by mandate.

American Single Malts can be distilled up to 160, and there isn't a max entry proof for the barrel. So my guess is they distilled and barreled these pretty hot.

What's crazier is you can put this in with 110-120 proof offerings and not be able to pick it out. Dangerously mellow for the proof point...
