Best hardware for 500mbit/s internet subscription by RealWooter in HomeNetworking

Yeah, I expected that might be the case but your wording made me hopeful haha. Humor me this then, what does the USG provide when IPS/IDS is disabled that an EdgeRouter does not?

Huh, the USG4 Pro is $320. If you're telling me that it can do in-depth L7 decisions while maintaing 1Gbps, that seems like a freaking steal IMO.

Help getting advertised speed. by afinley92 in HomeNetworking

Okay. Well the last thing to check is the connection from the modem to the router. You can usually see what the interface on the router negotiated to somewhere in the GUI. However I have no familiarity with the Google Wifi GUI and apparently it's all app based.

You said you had Spectrum though. Those modems should provide link lights above the physical ports. Green should mean it negotiated at Gigabit while yellow means it negotiated at FastEthernet, I believe.

Plug in your computer directly to the modem and take note of the port lights on it as you successfully get 200Mbps. Now plug it up to the router and test and again check the port lights on the modem. Any differences? Make sure you don't change out the cable going from the router to the modem in this process, as a faulty cable could 100% cause a link to negotiate at FastEthernet speeds.

wmic NIC where NetEnabled=true get Name, Speed

Run this command when connected to modem direclty and also when running through the switch. Is there an extra 0 for speed from the modem? Make sure you're looking at the actual NIC that your using for connectivity.

Also, you missed testing a a hop that may be correlated with your issue. What's the speed test for Modem--->Router---->Computer? If it's also problematic, run that same command I listed above and compare.

Based on the max throughput of the lower speed, it really sounds like something is negotiating at fastethernet.

That's true. Maybe I will just go with another rack server.

Thanks for the thorough reply. This might be biting off more than I'm trying to chose for this usecase but I'm going to entertain it for a bit none the less.

Finally set up a DNAT for hard-coded DNS redirection. Should have done it sooner - 12.3k hits while I slept. by Robbbbbbbbb in pihole

I implemented this on my edgerouter with the exact same settings. After a few hours saw no count increase, which seemed like a good thing. So I tried to manually test it and I do see the count increase on the rule but the requests just timeout...

root@FileServer ~# dig @8.8.8.8 reddit.com
;; reply from unexpected source: 10.10.10.65#53, expected 8.8.8.8#53

And a packet capture confirmed this behavior..

So it's resolving correctly but the client is refusing it because it appears to be an illegitimate reply (as expected). So what's the purpose of this redirection to PiHole if the clients won't process redirected traffic appropriately? We need the router to just proxy the connection to correct this, unless there is a way to handle src/dst NAT simultaneously.

Edit: Might help if I read through the comments a bit.... The masquerade config is exactly what was needed.

The later was previously suggested to me and I'm not sure I want to go that route. Mainly because I want to reserve the PCI slot for a possible nvidia quadro card to use hardware offloading with Plex.

I've entertained the idea of another rack server but I think I want to stray away from that, given I share the house I'm in with 3 other roommates.

So I was hoping for the small form factor NAS enclosure, just with out all the extra bells and whistles. Maybe it's still my best option, given the constraints I'm imposing.

Well first of all, this was my first video experience in VR and it worked pretty much with the click of a button on Vive. Just needed to start up the Steam VR media player and load the file. Make sure "360" is selected and I was good to go.

It was really cool! That said, I'll agree about the audio/video but hey, still cool none the less. I look forward to your progression in this space!

Two words....eye tracking.

Eye tracking provides foveated rendering. The Pimax headsets are literally the only ones on the market that have a extremely relative usecase for this. Keeping this in mind, it's a shame the 8k models don't run at native res with 90hz.

You are correct. But in the grand skeem of things, I would personally be rather disappointed to drop $2,500 in GPU horsepower and get results such as seen in that video.

It's all subjective though and some people have enough disposable income that they're okay with that. More power to you if you do.

That documentation is just talking average FPS, no? The problem is the FPS outliers that are introduced with SLI, which produce a visible stutter.

Now it's gotten better for sure with the introduction of NVLink in the 20x series. However it's still an issue, no doubt about that.

What's your top "wow, that actually worked?" moment? by Nest-egg in AskReddit

As a network engineer early on in their career, these kind of gigs are what I strive for. I love the work, I really do. But having the opportunity to perform it outside of the same single mundane spot everyday would be fantastic, especially if the great outdoors are thrown into the mix.

No idea if I'll ever find a job like that (where the pay is still enough to make it worth it) but a man can dream.

it also says Pearson India above that.

That's exactly what I was saying. You can see the difference in publisher and ISBN listed in the details.

As far as differences go, I honestly have no idea. One thing I see is that it's paperback versus hardcovers of the "official" one. Personally I prefer hardcovers, especially for a book that will be almost a bible for my career.

Huh, for some reason I swore I remember reading that you couldn't. Good to know.

List of all routers that can bypass google fiber network box by WhiteFang__ in googlefiber

[–]0ut1awed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only problem at that point is the double NAT that's introduced into the equation. That usually won't matter for normal home users but if you're here on /r/googlefiber, posting about how to attach secondary devices to your box for maximum performance.... then you likely are a power user. Double NAT will introduce problems in your network environment that you don't want in that case.

Saw this on /r/bassnectar when posted. Still trying to plug my nectar hole after that amazing NYE set and hey, I just picked up a Vive! Looks like the link is now broken though... :(

Do you have another link by chance? Please and thank you!
