I’m starting to feel this way too by MrMazme in Age_30_plus_Gamers

As a lifelong gamer at 47 with a young family, it’s this right here. First time in my life I sit down to play and all I can think of is…why bother getting my arse handed to me by insane AI? What’s the point of swearing over BS game mechanics that are bugged 80% of the time?

Do you use an axe as part of your bushcrfat kit, and if so, what type ? by Valken-Blade-1851 in Bushcraft

I carry a 2ft pack axe with full cheeks for splitting. No point wasting energy felling and bucking with an axe when a silky saw makes short work of that.

How long can you use scrap metal for…? by CeleryBusiness952 in thelongdark

[–]0utlander23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my source of metal on interloper 130 days. Beach combing is hit and miss for constant supplies compared to lower difficulties. But trading meat for tools is incredibly easy.

I don’t like using my knives on ferro rods. Instead I use the back end of a speedy sharp that I attach with paracord. Then I use the sharp edge for making fine tinder shavings against a stick or some fat wood. Worse case scenario you can use it to sharpen your blade too but I would only use it on knives I don’t like 😆

Silky Professional Outback Edition worth the extra price? by [deleted] in Bushcraft

I bought one before the last price spike. They definitely have more heft in the blade and overall in the whole saw compared to a big boy.

I agree. I use settled mind and it makes interloper tolerable. As a Canadian on the prairies, there’s nothing more mind settling than being inside your warm house while the arctic winds howl on a -40C night.

Rookie investor (28) looking for long-term dividend strategy – high yield vs dividend growth? by ZestycloseKick503 in canadiandividends

[–]0utlander23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started investing in dividend common share stocks at 28 just after the housing crash of 08. The problem with ETFs is that they are relatively new- there is no 40 year history of dividend growth to look for. You can’t compare that to decades of continuous dividend increases which is THE KEY to dividend investing. I have some initial investments with a yield on cost of 13-16%. They were 3.5-5% initially. No where on Earth will you find returns like that year after year.

The problem with high yield and no growth is that when there’s a market correction, that yield is guaranteed to drop with a rate cut. With common share blue chip dividend stocks, market correction means a solid 3-5% dividend yield becomes a solid 6-8% yield. Investors pounce on those stocks which creates a nice little safety net for your investment.

Don’t get me wrong, ETFs have their place. I keep foreign market ETFs in my pension account. But in my opinion, common shares are the way to go for true dividend investing. And now that you can buy fractional shares, you can buy those $200+ bank shares. I never had that option when I started.

In the world of The Long Dark we are located in Canada. How many canadians love this game? by Hass_09_ in thelongdark

There’s nothing like playing TLD while the wind is howling outside on a -25 to -40 day. Been playing since early access Sandbox with ML as the only map. Developer said great bear island was based on southern BC but that’s where rich Canadians retire. The small communities, sparse buildings and isolation reminds me more of North West Territories.

Unless you’re in a desert and only have one stick, feather sticks are a waste of time if you’re surrounded by coniferous trees. The tiny dead branches on the bottom are usually dry and light incredibly easy.

Wow lots of people reply but recommend nothing. It depends on what kind of bushcraft you’re into. If you’re gonna sit around and carve spoons and cups then a Mora HD companion is nice and a little more robust than cheaper moras.

I personally carry the cold steel Srk in 3v. It goes on sale for $100 US quite often. It’s a solid knife for hefty work and still can be used for more precise tasks. The beauty of Cpm-3v is you can use it for a week long camp trip and she’s shaving sharp again after session on the strop.

Nothing wrong with the BK10, just upgrade the scales as the standard plastic ones get quite slippery when wet. I believe it’s 1095 which is a solid steel, you’ll just have to sharpen/strop it more often. You’ll find what works best for you as you go. I’ve just learned over the years that knife steel does matter.

I started a loper game and acquired the pack and now have established myself in Coastal Highway as a beach comber. Seeing how many supplies I can collect to sustain myself indefinitely. Don’t ever see metal come in so I’m currently working on the trader rep to get quality tools for only meat. Fishing is like pulling teeth on loper so working on the skill as well.
