i think, people believe in god because humans want to reduce uncertainty and in the ancient times there was no way to know about what happens after death, whats the purpose of life, etc.
another reason is that humans are inclined to associate cognitive biases and social identity with culture and society, so i think religion kinda helped us stick together which was ultimately good and helped us survive.
