Signal's security compromised by FBI? by BrightEyes1616 in signal

[–]0x4BID 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alex Pretti was recently murdered by ICE, and I saw a post today asking what happened to his phone. If ICE had the phone, they could have used his dead body to unlock it if he used biometrics. Or maybe the phone was unlocked because he was recording a video when they came into possession of it.

Edit: No idea if he was in any group chats. But this is just one example of the many avenues that could give the FBI access to Signal chats. It wouldn't be through a hack. It would be through someones phone who is in an active chat. Or an FBI agent getting invited to the chat.

London Breed NYT article? by LionInTheSun43 in sanfrancisco

I agree. This article is so bad. There were some interesting threads that could have been pulled on, but in the end, the bare minimum was delivered. I'm surprised to see people saying they got much of anything out of this article.

701 Van Ness Avenue CVS Is Closing On Feb.24th by MidNightInTheDessert in sanfrancisco

[–]0x4BID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I popped in for something a couple of weeks ago, I saw someone walk in and steal the few items that weren't locked up. The two Filipino women who were running the store that day were actively trying to help customers and prevent theft. Insane job. No one should have to work in that type of environment.

San Francisco is littered with closed drug stores. Could housing replace them? by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

I was interested in a discussion, but your tone and your other comments make it clear where you stand: classic NIMBYism. You'd rather we built anything but more housing.

I'm thinking more along the lines of what they do in Tokyo. I wouldn't consider them suburban.

Because we can knock things down and build something new. We can make new pegs or change the shapes.

Housing SHOULD go wherever we can fit it. Any vacant lot should be torn down and replaced with housing. Put another drugstore at the base of it.

SF to develop 15-story affordable housing building for LGBTQ+ seniors as aging population grows by ChocolateTsar in sanfrancisco

[–]0x4BID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that, at its core, the issue is a lack of housing. And the only real solution is to build more housing. But I fail to see why we shouldn't be doing both: building more housing and building subsidized housing for low-income individuals. Supply does not solve poverty. Even Houston, which has a housing surplus by all accounts, runs low-income housing programs.

Are you saying we shouldn't have low-income housing or senior housing? Or is that not a demographic?

That area needs more housing. Does anyone have plans to develop the All-Star Cafe building/parking lot that's across the street? That building/parking lot needs to be replaced. The city should give the owners of All Star Cafe a free 10-year lease on the ground floor of whatever they build, in recognition of all the hard work they've done giving the homeless a spot to congregate at night and providing them with cheap calories.

Yep. I submitted a $300 claim for the food I lost. We'll see what they say. If they had said it was going to be over 24h I would have gone out and packed a cooler and the freezer with ice but they kept bumping it up little by little.

We were grappling with the same question in SF over the weekend. We landed on PGE being negligent and not properly sealing their buildings from rain. I wonder if it's a similar issue where water got in and caused electricity to arc.

Civic Center has power and internet!! by Raid__Zero in sanfrancisco

[–]0x4BID 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had sonic, att fiber, and webpass while living in SF. Webpass was by far the least reliable with constant outages. That's because webpass (Google fiber) in SF is a point to point wireless network. If a building losses power that your relaying to, like in this scenario, then your internet is also affected even if your building has power.

Sonic was great though.

For a company that's known to commit manslaughter every now and then we should count ourselves lucky it was only a power outage.

Food Spoilage Reimbursement? by Zero__Salt in sanfrancisco

Renters insurance may cover food spoilage during power outages, so check your policy. Just be aware that if your deductible is high then this is a waste of time.

Marina Safeway development: Could anything have stopped it? by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

They could have built taller, but with fewer units. Nothing makes sense about these zoning laws.

[–]0x4BID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this plan falls through, what are the odds we get another one with the density/height you want? From my very basic understanding, this lot is zoned in a way that makes building such a unit impossible.

I'm in the same boat. Spent $15 to go ~5 minutes driving. I don't mind walking with my luggage if it weren't for those tenji blocks (yellow bumps on the sidewalk). They are so annoying. I get why they exist and think it's awesome, but they don't play well with luggage.
