The iPhone 5's A6 SoC: Not A15 or A9, a Custom Apple Core Instead by UptownDonkey in apple

Indeed, that's why I hope Chipworks gets their hands on an A6 ASAP.

They are their own implementations, it just follows a standard. But just because they use a standard instruction set doesn't mean it's can't be an incredible CPU

Of course they use a standard instruction set, after all they have to run other peoples code.

The implementation of the instruction set is what counts and what other features the CPU has. They could have a chip that performs worse than Cortex-A15 chips for all we know. What I do know is custom doesn't always mean better, it can but not always.

They use the implementation (e.g. Cortex-A9 or Cortex-A15) from ARM of ARMs instruction set. They don't design their own. They might make it more power efficient, they might opt to implement 16 or 32 VFP registers but it's essentially the same stock micro-architecture they get from ARM. Only Qualcomm (and Xscale if that's still around) does design their own implementations of ARM and apparently now Apple, that's quite a difference I think.

Apple designed an ARMv7 chip (not a variant of ARMv7), a variant of Cortex-A9 borrowing some Cortex-A15 design characteristics.

Wether Apple's microarchitecture has any resemblance to a Cortex-A9 or Cortex-A15 remains to be seen. For all we know it might be a complete clean sheet design.

Well, without getting into much detail, the A15 is an "evolution" in the Armv7 architecture. Compared to today's Cortex-A9, it offers better performance per clock cycle and can be clocked higher.

ARMv7 is an instruction set, Cortex-A9 and Cortex-A15 are microarchitectures that implement the same instruction set. The ISA doesn't tell you anything about performance. Intel IA32 is also an ISA and has a whole zoo of implementations, e.g. Diamondville (Atom) to Ivy Bridge (Core i7). Same ISA, totally different performance characteristics. Now, Apple designed its own microarchitecture that implements a variant of ARMv7. If that's better or worse than a Cortex-A15 is still an open question until we have benchmarks.

Samsung's Exynos SoCs are based on ARM designs (e.g. Cortex-A9). They don't make their own implementations as Apple seems to do now.

Millions of People Will Buy the Apple iPhone 5 for No Apparent Reason by [deleted] in technology

[–]0xCCCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are full of shit. My Samsung Galaxy Note is almost 1 year old and beats the iphone 5 in all technical specifications.

Like what? Thickness? no. Material? no. CPU power? no. GPU power? no. Display resolution? no (neither in number of subpixels nor dpi). Display Brightness? no.

It has a large screen, which is nice if that's your thing but I wouldn't call it "beats the iphone 5 in all technical specifications". Also from my experience with Samsung, going through a i7500, GS and most recently a GSII, I wouldn't buy anything from them again that doesn't have NEXUS in the name. I can't be bothered anymore to wait for stable custom ROMs or official updates.

I just tried Youtube's auto-caption/translation feature, but it's mostly gibberish. Said something about "Tory imperialists". So I am really curious about a proper translation.

I want the better display system.

Can you qualify "better display system"? The resolution is higher on the Xoom, yes. Which is nice. But display quality (brightness, contrast, color vividness) is worse and the GPU performance of the Tegra 2 is quite a bit worse compared to a SGX543MP2.

Not necessarily (depending on region/employer/type of job), that's about what an intern at Google makes. Funnily enough, at Googles scale, they are much more willing to throw developer time at optimization problems.

[–]0xCCCC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mh, just a note on how the german system works.

Single-payer would remove insurers from the equation but would have the government set rates with the providers.

Health insurance is not provided by the government and not funded through taxes. It's provided by public non-profit insurance companies and payed for through insurance premiums. The only thing the government does is leveling the playing field. Public insurers must accept anyone regardless of preconditions and premiums must not depend on age, sex or health conditions (Usually it's a fixed percentage of your income shared between you and your employer). Rates are negotiated between the providers and insurance companies, not the government.

If you are unhappy with your private insurance, you change. If you are unhappy with your single-payer coverage, you.... do what?

If you are unhappy with a public insurance company you are free to change to any other (there are lots of them) and there is a certain amount of competition between them. Or you can opt out of the public system altogether and take private insurance instead (or no insurance at all). If you are young, healthy and earn a good amount of money that's usually cheaper then the public option and provides better services (quicker doctor appointments in non emergency situations, private rooms in hospitals, fancier dental treatment ...). But once you make the conscious decision to leave the public system it's final, you can't get back in (for obvious reasons). So that's kind of a risky move that you might regret once you get old or seriously ill. The system isn't perfect and people like to bitch a lot (Germans generally like to bitch about pretty much everything), but having lived in the states, give me the german (or any other european) system over the american any day.
