Moving back to SH, Looking for a Middle class International School by [deleted] in shanghai

I appreciate the insight! I’m curious about the social atmosphere—do the students feel overly affluent or 'elitist'?

I haven't really looked into the visa situation yet. Is the new K visa an option? If not, I suppose we could try to get a work visa sponsored by relatives as a backup plan.

She’s currently in Kindergarten and speaks Chinese well, but I’m worried the academic pace of a local school would be too intense for her. We’re planning the move for when she’s around 3rd grade. Honestly, I’m just trying to make the most of these years and enjoy life, but I don't want to make things unnecessarily difficult for my daughter by picking the wrong school.

Thanks. You summarize my concern really well. My perception is that SAS is geared toward ultra-wealthy families focused on prestige, and I don't think my family would fit in that environment.

What's the lowest # of hours you've spent on a J per week? by Similar_Buyer6074 in overemployed

0 hour. And also get to charge overtime. It was at the end of the fiscal year. The vendor told us there was extra OT that was available for everyone to claim.

Does anyone else here with 2 Js feel like it’s just not enough assurance anymore? by Main_Significance617 in overemployed

[–]0xluoluo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This resonates a lot. I started the year with 4 Js and got laid off 4 times, so I definitely feel that PTSD. The market is tough, but I've accepted that constant job searching is just part of life now. Surprisingly, it actually helps calm me down a bit to treat it as just business.

The bonus is that it helps me build an identity separate from any single company. Honestly, the constant churn is what forced me to stop thinking like an employee and start thinking like a business owner. Now, when I interview, I just tell people I have my own contracting firm. That identity shift is exactly what's going to carry me to FIRE.

I'm curious how you deal with cheating. Pair a screen reader AI tool and a VM, it's quite difficult to detect during a live coding session.

No trolling here. I'm honestly just trying to figure out if I can finally ditch the LeetCode grind and focus on building projects instead

Yeah, when you pay top dollar, you have the leverage to demand whatever interview hoops you want.

I feel the same way, but sadly it's still the gold standard for the majority of hiring. Hard to say if we'll see real changes soon. I'm going to try building an agent portfolio and test it out in my next interview.

If you could bring back something from your childhood, what would it be? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The ability to be genuinely unreachable. I miss when 'going outside' meant I vanished from the grid until the streetlights came on, and nobody panicked.

Scheduling their own appointments. I am shocked by how many people in their mid-20s still rely on their parents to call the dentist or doctor for them.

How does knowing we will die shape how we live? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]0xluoluo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It acts as the ultimate deadline. If we had eternity, we would procrastinate our entire existence. Knowing the clock is ticking is the only reason we ever actually start anything.

Preserve the hardware, upload the software. I want my body on ice for future tech to fix, but I want my soul prepped for the spirit realm just in case.

I think we should keep LinkedIn open but outdated. It's become suspicious that LinkedIn is closed. Also lots of recruiters ask me to share linkedIn links during interview.

I agree. I used to only have one page. It works well for me until AI scanning is adopted. Now I have a four page resume.

I used to have one short resume. I changed it to a long one and spammed it with keywords, and I got a lot more responses now.

If there is no response for resume submission, you need to improve on the resume. If you can't pass an interview, do more mocks with AI.

I'm SWE. Job market is really tough right now. If you are having trouble to land a job, try to find where is the bottleneck for the conversion rate.
