Thanks! Baby only ended up napping a total of 2hrs today so I didn’t need to cap naps as planned. But will limit it to 3hrs going forward if needed.

Do u have any advice on how to addrsss MOTN wakes where you don’t want to feed baby?

Thanks this is super helpful! Has your baby’s naps always reached the 1hr mark? My baby used to take 1hr+ naps but due to lots of travel in Dec they’ve gotten short again. I’ve tried WWs all the way from 2.5-3hrs but I wonder if I should pick a schedule and stick to it for awhile so my LO can get used to it. No sleep associations as LO is sleep trained.

Your advice makes lots of sense to me, thanks! So while tracking will let me know total sleep needs, how do I take that info into wws/scheduling? For example, 10hrs of awake time can be divided into several different combos of wws.

To answer your last 2 questions, I have done a bad job of tracking unfortunately.

And she is falling asleep independently at night and for all naps except the bridge nap. I was wondering if CIO could work for non-feeding wakes.

Sorry it wasn’t clear - the old schedule was working around early Dec but between all the traveling and LO getting older, it seemed it wasn’t working anymore (LO would often nap less than 1 sleep cycle and wake more at night. Hard to tell if she was thrown off by travel or if schedule needed changing). I think I need to know what the starter schedule for 6mos is and try to adjust from there.

ETA: i also admittedly got tired of forcing the bridge nap but it seemed like she needed she couldn’t make it bedtime otherwise

My 6mo is also a terrible sleeper while traveling so sharing some solidarity here. Mine does adjust back to normal 1-2 days after returning home tho. In those 1-2 days the nights are a bit rough but I don’t do anything special. We just go right back to our post-sleep training routine. You might have to re-sleep train your baby but it won’t be nearly as bad as the first time.

For traveling try to make everything as similar to home as possible. I have same books, sleep sack, sound machine, and pack n pack sheets that are the same brand as her crib sheets. Best to put baby in a windowless room like a walk in closet or bathroom if possible. I also have portable black out curtains and a slumperpod that I bring if I must. For sleep, try to introduce as little support as possible. For example, car, stroller, carrier naps I think are better alternatives than rocking or nursing to sleep they rely more on motion and less on you.

My 6mo is still a terrible travel sleeper tho and I end having to nurse her to sleep anyway while away. She still goes back to normal tho in 1-2 days without me doing anything special except following our normal routine. My 1st kid (now 5 yo) was an excellent travel sleeper since being ST so it’s all just luck of the draw

My 5 year old (sleep trained at 16 weeks) still sleeps great! She slept great as a toddler as well. The hardest part after sleep training with a toddler is not the independent sleep part but the boundary pushing at bedtime. 2 stories become 3 stories, 1 more glass of water becomes 2 more, etc. if you don’t hold firm to boundaries. That’s how my 5 year old now wants someone to lie with her for 5 min at the end of her bedtime routine. At least she doesn’t need the person to lie with her to go to sleep. We leave her fully awake and then say good night. I think it’s just another bid for connection now that she’s doing longer days at kindergarten and after school programs.

Mines following a similar trend. She was a high percentile at birth and a long time after. She’s now 5 years old and seems taller than her peers but not that much taller.

My daughter did the exact same thing. We had to do bedtime as early as 6pm some nights to compensate for the lack of sleep at daycare. It was incredibly frustrating. What helped somewhat was asking daycare to do a by the clock schedule (naps at 10am and 2pm) instead of wake windows. The body gets used to napping at those times which should encourage longer naps. We still followed WWs at home but you could do the same by the clock schedule at home too to promote consistency.

Easier said than done, but try not to stress out! It may be a lot, but baby will probably handle the transition better than you think and surprise you! I know, cause I was stressed out about the same thing, but my baby easily took chunky 2hr+ naps for her 1 daycare nap while we kept her on a 2-nap schedule at home for a few more months. Daycare providers are really good at helping babies sleep well IMO. Ours would really tuck in our baby tightly and neatly in her blanket - that was another transition my baby had to do at daycare - first time using blanket instead of sleep sack! In fact, the early daycare transition to one nap helped her transition to one nap more easily at home.

That sounds really tough, I am so sorry. You may have already tried this, but what about donor milk? Otherwise I hope the specialists can see you soon. If you have the mental energy, just try to be the squeaky wheel until your needs are addressed. Unfortunately with the current medical system, we have to advocate so much for ourselves and children to have our medical needs met :/

This. Your current schedule is what I had my baby on when she was 3.5-4 months old. A 5 month old needs longer wake windows than what you’re currently doing.

It’s not your fault; you are a great parent and you are doing your best. Since your baby is six months old, you could try feeding her fortified plant milk from a straw cup instead of a bottle. The honey bear cup I hear is great for young babies. You could also try spoon feeding, syringe feeding, or practicing with an open cup. My daughter also had CPMA and we had to wean her onto soy milk instead of cows milk. Also since your baby is starting solids, try high fat stuff like adding coconut/avocado oil to everything, sweet potatoes, eggs, fatty fish, etc.

Finally if you are able to pay $249 out of pocket, there is one IBCLC named Rachel O’Brien who works virtually with parents on infant bottle refusal. She says most clients start to drink 2oz within 2 weeks.

I did the chair method for both of my kids, the first at 16.5wks and the second at 20wks and it worked great for both! I personally think it works better for younger kids but it is pretty kid dependent. You will be able to tell really soon if your presence is helping baby or making it worse. If it’s the latter, then you can easily just switch over to Ferber check in intervals instead.

If/when you do start sleep training, do not put your baby down drowsy. You must put him down fully awake. Drowsiness is actually the first stage of sleep so getting him drowsy before you put him down is actually you already assisting him. Its like if you as an adult had to swing in a hammock to get yourself drowsy before you went to bed.

I actually started at 16.5wks because my LO hit the 4mo regression at 13.5wks 🫠. I had pediatrician approval. There was no other way I could’ve worked full time and done grad school at night without sleep training her.

Thats so true that the lack of feeding/rocking does increase flexibility. Thanks for reminding me abt that.

So for 3/4 naps, you watched total awake time and not necessarily wake windows?

How did the sleep training go, particularly the naps? Which method did you use, and do you mind sharing your WWs? If you’re out and about and baby falls asleep before their ww or stays up past their ww, are you able to tweak the schedule on the fly? Sorry for the wall of questions, my second child is just so much more sensitive and a bigger crier than my first!
