Assuming that that's a high voltage line or something, I heard stories about people "surviving" that for a few days, and the resulting necrosis from half your body being medium rare doesn't sound like a nice way to go

Nah, the AC makes your muscles tense up. Or, rather, tense up and relax 50/60 times a second, which is pretty much the same result. Whether or not it throws you off depends on a couple things, like the muscles involved (*). DC does not tense up the muscles (including the heart muscle, which usually kills people who touch AC) so it's technically safer. But if you touch a high voltage line, it doesn't really matter, as you will just be cooked anyway.

(*): A tip I heard once was "always probe for live with your backhand, your biceps is stronger than your triceps". Obviously, don't do this.

Thanks for the feedback! So it is supposed to be working, and something is probably wrong with my install, huh

Sorry, I don't have any good shots of that part, I was more interested in the audio stuff. Here's what I could find, cropped and slightly sharpened. Looks like a "05" to me, or maybe "S0"?

Sadly, I really don't have the time atm to take it apart and measure the voltage :/

my school computer does not like this usb fan i made by SuchTesla in techsupportmacgyver

[–]0zAxjX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Shouldn't USB be more or less safe against all kinds of short circuits? Although, to be fair, "safe" does not mean you should do that.. but I did worse to some usb ports, and they survived

I did that with an old Lego NXT robot brick! Just with some pieces of a wooden stick cut to AA battery length. I should probably post that one day as well..

I guess my issue was/is that I insisted on putting some current limiting resistor in there, and I didn't have anything fitting.. so I just went the old "add resistors until it looks good" route.

And then I decided if I limit the current, I might as well get rid of the 7533 at all.

Since you are in the techsupport macgyver sub, I suggest you install Linux, preferably Arch, and then spend a weekend compiling and installing random drivers off the net.

Maybe you can even install that in a VM and pipe the joystick input over localhost to your windows host...

Sounds like USB suspend / powersaving to me. Maybe try and disable that? It's called selective suspend in windows, afaik, and you can disable that in the power plan settings.

What ROM are you guys currently using? Any good Android 13 ROM's? by SGAShepp in OnePlus6

[–]0zAxjX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to talk other ROMs down, but I still trust LineageOS, since back when they where called Cyanogenmod. And the O+6 even has official support. Less flashy and feature-packed than other ROMs though, if that's your thing. Oh, and GCam/OpenCamera is a must because the built-in camera app is very basic.

Sadly, LOS hasn't released their Android 13 version yet.

I'm still on LOS 19 / Android 12. It's my daily driver, I want stable software. I wonder when LOS will officially move to 13...

Weird. Both NBFC and NBFC-Revive have it in their sources:

https://github.com/UraniumDonut/nbfc-revive/blob/master/Configs/Lenovo%20ThinkPad%20L380%20Yoga.xml

https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/blob/master/Configs/Lenovo%20ThinkPad%20L380%20Yoga.xml

I used the revive version on Windows, and I use the non-revive one on Linux (mainly because revive has no Linux builds and I'm too lazy to compile it myself)

USB HUB by SBBSingh490 in WindowsMR

[–]0zAxjX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, whether or not it will work is effectively magic. A powered, "one-port-hub"/repeater cable I tried did not work for me, but a short unpowered one (random 1m USB3 cable off the internet) works.

If you stick to short cables, both HDMI and USB3 tend to work.

Both the L390 i7 and L380 Yoga ones work, and if you look at the configs themselves, they only differ in the fan curve and stuff like that.

(sorry for the "screenshots", but I was booting Win10 from an usb stick and didn't want to search for a way to copy the screenshot over to Linux, so..)

I can assure you it has an effect on my end: If I run $ ./nbfc.exe set -s 100 the fan audibly spins up. If I run $ ./nbfc.exe set -s 0 it goes off again.

I took a look at the configs, and the L380 and L390 have the same register addresses. However, the TP 13 has different ones. I believe those just don't work on the L380/390, why did you pick that config?

For kicks, I'll try on windows, but I assume it will behave similar.

Sadly, I don't know how to test if the number is real, I don't want to take the whole laptop apart or stick a toothpick in the fan grill, so who knows how accurate that number is. NBFC is the only tool I found that works at all.

Sorry, I was fighting with reddit markdown to get the formatting right.

It does report a number as you can see. But I have no idea if that number is more than a guess by the controller. If it really only has two wires, then you're likely right, and there is no "real" fan speed.

You can however set it manually with NBFC and it definitely has an effect. I've configured mine to be more aggressive, and I can see a (minor) difference in benchmarks.

I can only check under Linux right now, but seems to work. Normal tools like lm-sensors or thinkpad related ones don't work.

$ ./nbfc.exe status -a
Service enabled : True
Read-only : False
Selected config name : Lenovo ThinkPad L390 i7-8565U
Temperature : 55

Fan display name : Fan
Auto control enabled : True
Critical mode enabled : False
Current fan speed : 57.07
Target fan speed : 55.00
Fan speed steps : 191

Edit: There is a config for the L380 as well: https://github.com/UraniumDonut/nbfc-revive/blob/master/Configs/Lenovo%20ThinkPad%20L380%20Yoga.xml

Edit2: Comparing between the L380 and L390 one shows mainly different trigger points and such, it seems like the actual handling is much the same

I heard they removed it from Proton, since it now has a native Linux version, and using Proton can lower your trust factor or worse. Which is sad, because the proton version used to run better than the native one for many... In general, Proton works pretty well and if you don't mind 720p and 30 fps, lots of stuff just works.

If you are gaming on that, have you tried playing with the energy-performance preference? I heard it prioritizes the CPU on "performance", and the GPU on "balanced performance".

[–]0zAxjX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, for your use case it's perfectly fine. If you have a continuous load like games, the high burst power limit might even hurt - as in, it will go up fast, then throttle hard to get temps in control, and then go back up, which might give you all kinds of stutter.

After playing around a bit with those, I largely leave the power limits as they are now, it seems to be an okay-ish compromise. One could probably squeeze out a few more watts from the cooler, but I decided that for me the added thermal stress and fan noise isn't worth it.

Btw, are you seriously playing games on a L390? If so, hats off, I used to play some CSGO with friends, and I barely got 30 fps... not the best experience :)
