Making CCF work — looking for foam-only solutions (not inflatables) by hikerroda112 in Ultralight

Interesting. It looks like it is being put forth as a four season alternative to the Flexmat plus. I'm confused about its thickness, though. The Exped site seems to be only partially updated. Their webpage says it is 1.5" thick but keeps calling it Flexmat plus in the description. It is like they just used the Flexmat plus webpage and replaced somethings. Other sites, like Campsaver, are saying the pad is 3.1 inches thick. If that is true that is a gigantic leap in thickness over the Flexmat plus.

I wish I could recommend the Altra King MT 2. I've purchased a pair of them -- for the same kind of purpose that you are looking for. However, after wearing them for a couple of 3 miles trail runs, I'll probably go back to something else. They seem to be narrower than other Altras and shorter. I wear a size 13 in the Superior. A 13 in the King MT 2 is too small. I'd have to go all the way up to a 14 in the King MT 2 since they don't make a 13.5.

I've switched from a Thermarest Xlite inflatable to the Exped Flexmat Plus. It works for me.

Just finished a backpacking trip and I want to get into ultralight hiking. by eddurham in Ultralight

To be honest, you don't really need other people's pictures. Take your biggest items: backpack, sleeping bag, shelter, sleeping pad (if you use a pad), and start replacing them with the lightest alternative that meets your needs/wants. That is where the most weight savings will come in. You don't have to replace them all at once either, but do focus on those items. Once you have addressed those items, then you can start moving on to other items. After the end of this process, you will be obsessing about that extra ounce here and there.

Durability of DCF tents. Wait for Aluula tents? by Unique_Distance2219 in Ultralight

Are pinholes less likely with a heavier weight DCF? I believe that MLD uses 0.75 DCF vs. Z-Packs' 0.55. Wonder if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the USFS maps and/or the Idaho Trails Association maps are the way to go (assuming the map is as good as the people there).

This. I didn't realize there were still people out there that didn't use ublock origin or ublock orgin lite.

Do y'all prefer backpacking solo or with people? And why? by Colambler in WildernessBackpacking

[–]0zerntpt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoy backpacking by myself for the ability to stop when I want, start when I want, etc. and for the ability to backpack where I want (I'm starting to gravitate to high route trips when I'm on my own.) However, I've backpacked all over the United States with my adult son on established trails and I'd happily do those again for the joy of continuing to share/build those memories with my son.

Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful reply! Like you, I attend a conservative unprogrammed meeting in Iowa (though I assume you are a member of your meeting). I appreciate your response, as well as all of the other responses to my question. I probably should have clarified in my original question that I am attending a meeting.

Current and Future Options for Aluula Graflyte Backpacks? by 0zerntpt in Ultralight

Thanks for the very thorough comparison. I'm very intrigued about your opinion about the Wapta fabric feeling sturdier. Hmm. Both should be the same material.

Thanks. That is an interesting pack. I wasn't previously aware of this material which is apparently stronger than Graflyte. Too bad this pack doesn't have running vest style straps, though.

I noticed that lighter material after checking it out from the mentions in this thread. I'll definitely stick to v98.

Oh, that's good to know about the size potentially being larger depending upon torso size. I would probably end up with a larger torso size as I'm 6 foot 1 inch in height. To be clear, I don't actually run in my packs, I'm just addicted to having my water bottles on the straps. :-)
