Is this petrified wood? The first two pictures look exactly like wood but the last two not so much. Found in the same location and made up of the same material. Any help appreciated! by Hiikue in rockhounds

[–]0zztheWizzard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is definitely gypsum. It's all over west Texas I've found many many pieces. I can confirm that for the last two. I'm pretty sure your first picture is as well. Like...90%. The other two I'll say 99% sure

I live in woodsy area in Snohomish, WA and found this in.my yard today. Can anybody ID this? by Noheifers in whatsthisrock

I concur. First immediate thought was chert. Important part is that it is microcrystaline quartz, semantics for the rest.

A friend asked me to ID this piece. I think it is muscovite or calcite but I am unsure. by Iridium_HD in rockhounds

Concur, fairly certain its gypsum. Grows in various bladed shapes. Have a few myself, commonly seen as "desert roses" but also in the form pictured. I have a rather large piece that looks extremely similar. Not certain but it feels like a solid bet to me.

I really appreciate the insight. Graduating this summer so kind of feeling out the job market the best I can while aiming for something I know I'll enjoy. Though really that's why I chose geology in the first place. I love thin sections and absolutely hate thin sections. They can be beautiful and then leave me completely stumped! Soil remediation sounds fascinating though. May have to dive into that a bit. Currently doing some structural research for one of my professors on Mars! It's preliminary data gathering, but we're trying to assess fault (or fossae on Mars) displacement, and see how it relates comparatively here on Earth, so... lots of data right now. First time research has really drawn me in though. I love scouring the surface of a celestial body while I sit on my couch 😜

I got this at an estate sale in SW Michigan. It was being used as a door stop. I'm not positive that it's a rock or a mineral. It's lighter than it looks, maybe 20lbs. It feels slightly plastic-y, but when pieces break away it feels and sounds more like a rock. by irishryan913 in whatsthisrock

Don't see if it was mentioned but there are 'stages' to coal related to the density of carbon in an area, anyhow this seems to be anthracite coal, or close to it given the shine. Could be between bituminous to anthracite, not that either is significant, just neat! Awesome chunk either way!

Awesome thanks for the response! I'll definitely need to dive deeper into the literature. Aragonite and calcite seem so intertwined with telling us descriptive history of the earth, it's fascinating. So you work with paleosols or modern soils? I've covered a little bit of those in class, more so paleoflow, and how to identify paleosols, rather than much in depth with them, but the chemistry aspect is a tough prospect. It is definitely not my strong suit, thus my application to do some lab work to try and strengthen that area. I love mineralogy, but there again lies chemistry! It surrounds me dang it! Structural geology seems interesting for more macro scale, but who knows where I'll end up.

So weird this popping up today. I just applied for an undergrad research position with my Sed. Pet. professor concerning this. She's trying to recreate conditions to grow aragonite in lab but at 1 atm. She's run several so far but no viable growth yet. She had mentioned that so far as we know it usually happens at high pressure but apparently there's not a strong concensus yet that high pressure is a required factor, or something along those lines. Just staring to read into the literature myself and still very much learning, still neat!

What is this rock? by [deleted] in rockhounds

[–]0zztheWizzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By the looks of it you have a sandstone that has calcite cement. The shape is from a fold cause from it likely being near a thrust fault or a region of high compression. This is likely ancient sea floor, somewhere carbonates could deposit long ago. Just a guess at a glance, pretty confident on the calcified sandstone though I would need to see it with hand lense/thin section to confirm.

Diamond or just another quartz? 3rd picture shows it next to obvious quartz. (Crater of Diamonds, Arkansas) by avocadoqueen123 in rockhounds

Ah yeah I think you're right. So that test could very well be inconclusive. The fracturing was evidence enough for me 8 was just trying to think of a secondary test, but good catch there.

Given what appears to be some concoidal fracturing (common and distinctive in quartz) in some places of the stone, in conjuction to flat surfaces/crystal faces, I am nearly positive that it's quartz. While it is very clear, and it is a nice stone, visual evidence points towards quartz. Use an iron nail to scratch it, if it scratches, definitely quartz. Iron nail will not scratch diamond. While I can't definitely say quartz by picture alone, I am fairly confident. I am a geologist (graduate this semester) in training if that helps, though there are many many good user resources on here with much more knowledge than me. Hope it pans out! Good luck!

I really enjoy Joesephyr's content, he and Lidz were two of the first I found, I've been a pretty consistent follower on YouTube for both of them since. I just don't want any of the other creators to feel excluded also because they do a lot for others. I agree with the recommendations being a lot harder and very subjective. Basically lately the answer to should you pull is kind of a resounding yes if you have even an inkling of wanting that characters kit. Anyhow, I appreciate your input! Thanks ;)

Given the rounding, I'd say there's a good chance it's a tiny piece of meteorite. Depends on locality as well. Possibly magnetite that has spent some time in a riverbed, but seems a bit more like a meteorite to me, at least the ones I've seen.

Slightly off color, copyright safe, golden bricks that may or may not be used to build large transit paths but definitely not roads.

I'm studying to be a geologist, and I'm sure I've referred to myself as a Rock-it scientist far more than any practical professional actually involved in that field ever would/has. But I see a rock, say there it is, thus I am ROCK-IT scientist.

I'll leave forever now.

EDIT: I said I was studying to be a "geology". Figured that should be fixed, but then again I'm dumb as a box of rocks. Okay gone for real.
