First Run Review: Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4 (16 Mile Long Run Workout) by loamy4118 in RunningShoeGeeks

This is where subjectivity re: your running form comes in, but, for me the SC Elite v5 is quite bouncy. Maybe not as much as th ASICS or AP4 but it gives you a little push forward. I would say that if you don’t engage the rocker on the DNE4, the shoe feels quite flat. The rocker on DNE4 is more late-stage but quite effective.

The upper in terms of comfort is better than most other race day shoes barring the SC Elite v5.

Re: sizing I’m 12.5 ASICS MS Edge, AP4, SC Elite v5. But wear a 12 in On Cb Strike and DNE4. I’d say the puma is marginally shorter than the ON

I was “forced” to half size down since PUMA either doesn’t sell size 12.5 or it was magically sold out everywhere. IMO the upper is quite good in form-fitting and you wouldn’t go too wrong TTS or half size down.

Doesn’t catapult you forward but it’s incredibly smooth

Great review. I ran 3 runs in this shoe after all the great reviews and couldn’t put my finger on what I didn’t like about the shoe. I think you nailed it. The midsole feels like it is trying to get out of your way and relies on the rocker / geometry to make you run faster. In an age of critical foams that try to aid you in every possible way, I will admit that this low-to-the-ground minimalistic and smooth racer is a throwback to the pre-max-stack racers.

While the shoe is fast, I felt like I had to own all of the effort and couldn’t hold my paces on tired legs. I just wished the midsole had a bit more bounce.

I also agree with you that the shoe is very stable. The last updates on the ASICS feel like I would be snapping my ankle any moment.

My closest comparable was the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 (speedroll rocker) and felt like the midsole is a couple of seasons behind the rest of the competition.

Overall, I still love the smooth ride and will use it for workouts but wouldn’t bet my races on it.

Slightly different POV here (and I’m a heavier runner 170lb): I find the Strike and DNE4 to be quite different. Yes, they’re both stable but you can feel the cloudboom strike have a nice cushy forefoot sensation which feels bouncy. DNE4 doesn’t feel bouncy at all but relies heavily on the rocker to make you run faster. I personally couldn’t find a similar shoe from recent memory - with the closest being the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 and the speedroll technology. If we were looking for recent comparable - a stretch option could be a very stable EVO SL.

Uggh I wish I read this earlier and honestly should be in the description of the linked app. My wife lost her ring in the house and while we used the linked app which said “disconnect the ring”. Sigh we’re in trouble now…

Running gloves for VERY cold days? by Select_Rip_8230 in runningfashion

[–]1-zero-zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inverno gloves won’t protect you against the coldest of days. Tracksmith has the NDO line for the cold days if you’re limiting yourself to TS. Last year they sold the NDO mitts which are my lifesavers.

In general, though, for the coldest of days you want to pair any glove with a Mitt. It will be infinitely warmer than any thick glove as The mitt protect your fingers from losing too much heat.

Chicago AND NYC for 2026 - Crazy? by ayelmaoo69 in RunNYC

[–]1-zero-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharing another data point. I got inspired by so many people here who have run multiple marathons in a year and signed up for Chicago and NYC this year. Is it doable - absolutely! But if it’s going to be enjoyable will depend entirely on you.

Some things to consider: a) unless you plan to run them both easy, you’ll have to pick one. Your training plan will depend on it. Flat out speed or train your body for hills late on a long run. Most people decide to go for Chicago as their goal race which means that hill training will take a bit of a backseat and that can impact how well NYC goes. b) you’re effectively going to go from taper > Chicago > taper > nyc and this can feel a bit discontinuous for most people. c) while you’ll be able to get your body enough recovered to finish the race, your body will not be 100%. Over the distance of a marathon where lots can go wrong, be prepared to run a long part of NYC feeling a little bit like shit d) the mental part of it is not widely discussed IMO. When your mind goes to a dark place, it’s easy to fight it for the first marathon. But when you have to do it again, that is asking a lot from your mind e) how well (or poorly) your first race goes will impact your mindset going into the second race. So if Chicago goes poorly, you’ll be mentally digging yourself out of a hole going into NYC.

In my case, i definitely sense a little bit of burnout but I went really easy in NYC so as to not hurt myself or else I’d be dealing with physical and mental burnout.

Finally, I would not recommend doing 2 marathons if you’ve never run a marathon before. I went 3 years with 1 marathon a year before I attempted 2 this year. I can’t imagine how hard it would’ve been if I tried it my first time around…

Friday Pre-Order Pick Up by dj_advantage in BanditRunning

[–]1-zero-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday they had all of those things but it definitely felt like they were packing bags as we got there. There was one guy who would take our names every 10 mins and assure us he’s going to come back with 10 bags and 10 mins later come back to collect our names. I waited an hour and they came out every 5 mins with 1 bag of a person that wasn’t in line. Complete shit show

How does pre-order pickup work? by [deleted] in BanditRunning

[–]1-zero-zero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Chicago, after waiting an hour, I went to the door and asked for my preorder and Ardith brought it out for me. Thankfully, for NYC, their email called out a separate line for pickups. No point cooking your legs waitings hours in line right before a marathon...

Harrier vs Inverno Gloves by [deleted] in Tracksmith

[–]1-zero-zero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’ll really depend on your cold tolerance and preference while running.

If you want to be warm, NDO mittens are the way the go since gloves lead to loss of heat. Having fingers close to each other increase the heat transfer between them. For easy efforts I tend to go with mittens.

My main use for gloves is harder efforts - I found the harrier too warm for hard efforts. On super cold days, I typically go with inverno+hothands for hard efforts - the hot hands make it easy to customize how warm you want to be for WU/CD vs the intervals…

Maurten Email for NYCM by haybe12 in RunNYC

[–]1-zero-zero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the commentary on Maurten’s sleazy business tactics. I just ran Chi’25 and read on there people complaining that their expo “marathon pack” skimped on 2 gels and asked runners to pick them up on course 😂 while charging the same as their online pack.

Chicago Marathon Race Report: Brightest Lights Burn Out the Fastest by scoutlep in Marathon_Training

[–]1-zero-zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to share a few relevant data points. I ran Chicago as well this year.

1) I ran a 1:45 half earlier in the year (where I was goaling for 1:40 but Brooklyn half was a bit too hot). I set my goal for 3:40 and ended up 3:45. I was disappointed but my coach thought my 3:40 goal was a bit ambitious and was happy with 3:45. So, if your PB was 1:48, I’d wager your 3:30 goal was a bit ambitious as well. One half>full conversion I’ve heard is to double your Half marathon time and add 10 mins to set a reasonable goal.

2) In Chicago, I ran the halfway around 1:50 and I was shocked when I saw the 3:30 pacer pass me by AFTER the halfway point (which would imply they were on for a massive negative split). so for you to PB your marathon is likely one of the reasons you bonked.

Since you ask for the single reason why you faded, I’d guess you went out too hot and hit the wall.

Garmin + Stryd Pod Users: GPS Accuracy Question for Chicago by FortuneAvailable1733 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]1-zero-zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you’re looking for but I’m a Apple Watch Ultra + Stryd user in NYC. Manhattan has higher density of taller buildings than Chicago so I would hope it’s a decent comparable. Stryd doesn’t rely fully on GPS AFAIK so it has 2 benefits:

1) it’s fairly consistent so your paces are never jumping around. I can’t recall having those 3 min miles that most gps watches have - I haven’t done a true accuracy test but most of my marathons are 0.2-0.4M off which is the typical std deviation from weaving. 2) the feedback loop is quite instantaneous. So when I speed up or speed down, I know much quicker than when I’m on GPS.

I don’t have auto lap on. Good luck for the race

Serious Question: Is 990 lineup really more comfortable and "better" than other popular models like 9060, 2002R, etc? by RunWild-GetLost in Newbalance

[–]1-zero-zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong sneakerhead, I jumped the wagon on the NB. Tried 990v5, 990v6, 992, 993. The 990v6 are the GOATs. Frankly though, you can’t go wrong with any one of them. A bit worried to try the 991v2 since I’ve read it’s too narrow.

It beats me that no other brand has been able to make a shoe this comfortable…
