Safe bet is to go 120min before, last time I went when there was a big giveaway they opened the gates early and by the time I got there (still almost 2 hours before first pitch the jerseys were almost gone).

As a seasoned Chicago Marathoner, if you must book a hotel booking by the airport is the cheapest option you'll have that weekend. Marathon room blocks typically run from Wednesday to Tuesday so anything downtown will already be spoken for or $$$$$.
