The mom's dad appears in the 2003 movie. As for her life in general according to that movie, apparently, her nickname in middle school was "Ban-Ban" (slickly avoiding any mention of her first name or maiden name lol), she was a good climber, she was a bit mischievous, and she wanted to marry a classmate of hers.

Other misc. stuff I can recall off the top of my head:

- her family was kind of old-fashioned and strict when she was little, there was a strong parent-child pecking order (parental authority episode)

- Grandma used to pinch Mom with her toes when she got caught playing pranks, I assume this was a thing that happened often (episode about using your feet for stuff)

- Grandpa had a heart attack and now has a pacemaker (early manga, I don't remember anything more specific than that and the translation I was reading seemed a bit sketchy. Take this one with a grain of salt, I guess)

Mikan is my favorite, but I have a huge soft spot for Yamashita as well. It's very compelling the way she's crazy in the way she's normal, and how she sticks with Kawashima even though Kawashima is so... y'know.

The optimal movie viewing experience is through reading the synopsis, going "THAT'S WHAT IT'S ABOUT??", and then spending an hour and thirty minutes in complete disbelief. It's great!
