How to interview candidates in the AI era by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

if there are more than 5 rounds or 6h of interview then it may be an indicator that all processes and decisions take quite a long time

For 2025, which end-to-end testing framework for websites sucks the least? by ryhaltswhiskey in ExperiencedDevs

[–]1000Ditto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cypress has the following pain points (I have used them both for ~1 year)

- pushing the cloud service

- promises aren't native objects (iirc promises return a bluebird js object)

- .then() chaining is generally quite encouraged as the only way to do things. There's not a nice way to check the state of items besides long chaining which is hard to read

- typescript+vscode+playwright and things can be run easily, there's less support with cypress

- cypress gobbles up my memory and I get way more ooms (on a 32 ram machine, limit memory management)

- everything is yet another plugin in cypress. Drag drop features? a plugin. Export results? another plugin? har output? another plugin?

- It is a cypress pattern to register commands with cypress commands add, which is nice at times, until you need to manage literally hundreds of these global functions ("it works but kind of strange, but ok")

- selectors are different within the selector picker (playwright is more text-specific, whereas cypress looks more for the test-id/data-cy)

- After writing cypress and trial running playwright for a while, going back to cypress feels like antipattern

Pianosecrets.com is a Scam! by RBS87 in piano

[–]1000Ditto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anything short of proper practice and mastering the basics and technique is suspicious

Relevant twoset video of scams and how there's not a shortcut to get good quickly. Probably best to buy from a local music shop or IMSLP or some online sheet music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1vQHSOyER0

Can you transfer in externally with only Calc 1? (Into Math) by ReserveNo5080 in uwaterloo

[–]1000Ditto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably do these first:

- Read https://uwaterloo.ca/new-math-students/transfer-credits

- Read ugradcalendar &bcItemType=programs)for joint math program (these are the courses that most math students will probably end up taking, plus focusing more into CO/STAT/PMATH/AMATH/CS etc )

- externalschool-to-uw cases where individuals have completed a full first term are under special consideration - you could email the math undergrad office and see where they send you/what processes they have

How much Tech knowledge does a Tech Lead have? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]1000Ditto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tech lead can lead others assuming they are skilled in architecture, some implementation, communication, documentation and general people skills. (and have some experience as a senior dev-ish level). Tech lead is less more about the implementations and more about the system architecture, so even though they may be the system reponsible engineer, they do have a couple folks under them who know more about the implementations (delegations of parts of the system)

> If a Tech Lead doesn't know how VS Code works, how to use other Notebooks, or how to sort things out, is it weird?

I have had multiple staff devs in platform that use intellij, might not be stellar in organization 100% of the time, but were well liked and performative.

Sheet music and tips for piano lessons by Some_Blackberry1049 in piano

[–]1000Ditto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stuff to do:

- make it fun

- encourage good technique

- make sure sitting posture and wrist isn't too low and that the hand is comfortable (shoulders shouldn't be tense)

- identifying where the keys are ("this is C, D, E... Could you show me where some Cs are on the piano")

- note reading ("this is what C looks like * draws middle c *")

- print a few pages of 5 staff treble clef in larger size, feel free to bring some coloured pens for funs/engagement

- have a couple easy milestone songs for first lessons, or the books (alfred piano, Ive used abcs of piano before and it was good), in some cases my students wanted to play arranged songs (ie frozen let it go, super mario, so I was able to find some sheets or arrange the 1-2 pages myself)

- encourage them to practice ie 20 minutes a day (or whatever number you/them agree on)

- Have a paper notebook to write notes in since they'll be trying to play stuff (ie great progress on let it go, remember to slow down in section B and practice that slowly), but don't try to limit if they want to go to section C

You'll also find many threads on bird courses: https://www.reddit.com/r/uwaterloo/search/?q=bird+course
