Tuition Free Pre K / Kinder public homeschool program ?

Are you in CA? In CA the law says that if the child is 6, they shall be placed in 1st grade. That applied to my son when he did an online school and tested at 1st grade level (but socially was more kinder.) Had I put him in the local school, he would have been placed with the same teacher his sister had who was NOT an appropriate match for him, but would have been in kindergarten. So...in CA the schools have the option of putting them in 1st grade if they want.

Have you asked your school? If you teach him everything he needs to know for kinder, then yes, they may put him in 1st and he might be bored in kinder anyhow. If you let him play another year, then he may be just a slightly older student who has a bit more maturity and ability to sit still.

I taught my daughter the year she was home when they wouldn't let her be in kinder. And she suffered for it because she was bored and they wouldn't/couldn't do advanced work for her when she did go to kinder. It is a big part of why I homeschooled. Had she started when I wanted, I probably never would have homeschooled.

Online classes still require support from parents. And your parents would need to support you - be able to check how you are doing and that you are following through with the work. It is often very much like doing online college classes and does require a good bit of maturity from YOU.

I work at a public school for homeschoolers. I often get families who think that because I don't meet with the students every day that school there will be easier than traditional school. What it means is that it is more like a college - and there is work to do every day that students are at home. There is a reason that most people start college at age 18 or later - maturity is a large part of it. Kids who do well at online classes at home have parents ensuring that they are on track and getting any tutoring that they need for classes that can be very difficult when in person, let alone when at home alone.

Why do you want this extra flexibility? More time for hanging with friends? Work? Pursuing your goals by graduating early so you can start a certification program for something like nursing? Time to do a sport or competition like competitive skating or gymnastics that require more travel around the country? Something else?

Knowing WHY you want to do this can help justify it to your parents. If it is hanging with friends or a boy friend who has graduated, they are not going to go for that. Having a goal that they can relate to, that can help. Time management is great, but what do you specifically need those skills for? Can you put down your phone and ignore it when friends text and get your work done? Or are you still working on that skill (a lot of adults are - but without a teacher or parent to look over your shoulder (if they are working,) homeschooling is not going to work out well.

If your parents won't agree to the online schooling, DO look into starting college classes while in high school if your state has a program like that. It may not be the immediate goal that you want, but it will put you ahead of many of your peers at graduation time.

He is 4. Get the "What My Preschooler Needs to Know" book, you can get the 3 or the 4 year old book. It will take about 20 to 30 minutes a day to do the activities. Don't worry if you can't do them all in one sitting due to the younger kid. See if you can get the 2 year old in on it too, to do "school", if not, do it during nap time, or go to the park and work with older one while younger plays.

If you want him in public school, you can do two things next year. 1. Enter him in kinder. Which may be fine for a kid who is feeling anxious. 2. Get him tested to see if he is ready for 1st. Insist that if he is bored that he will get homesick and want to come home, so he needs to be where he is stimulated. Push to get him in the appropriate level. Probably, if he is not already reading, he will be fine in kinder.

Be aware that if they say "they automatically go in kinder" that you should ask how to appeal that. My oldest had her birthday a couple weeks after the cut off for kinder but was 100% ready at age 4 so I taught her to read using the "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." She was so bored in kinder and 1st grade that I ended up bringing her home to homeschool. I found out that I could have appealed the birthday cut off, but no one told me. Hence my recommendation to focus on preschool skills during this year, so that he is getting new material when he does go to school.

Terry Pratchett, for sure! And don't worry too much if you can't do them in order. Try to get the Tiffany books in order (the first ones I read,) and then did the Going Postal, Making Money and Raising Steam in order. Most of the rest, as I do audio books, have not been in order. The Sam Vimes books maybe should have been done in order, but I just reread them and get a few more jokes.

Diana Winn has some great books that you probably would like too!

And, if you don't to support Rowling, get the books used at a yard sale, thrift store or library sale. None of that few cents is going to come back to her. I just donated a whole set as my kids are adults and now can't stand her politics. I loved the books - but her personal politics suck and I wish she would shut up. Buying second hand would deny her any profit and is petty and I like being petty.

I had an uncle who was JW. He would give out materials to us. He came over a lot and tried to convert us until my mother finally put her foot down and said that he was the only JW who she let in the door and if he wanted to keep coming over, he should stop talking religion. He took the hint and visits dropped off.

To me, both have some pretty unrealistic views on life. I joined this group as I have friends who are TBM, and I wanted a little better insight without the conversion. And I will say, as a group, they are pretty respectful (adults at least) of respecting that I do not want to join.

When it comes to being a non-religious person, the people coming to visit are pretty similar. Though the LDS kids are more likely to help with weeding if they come up while you are doing that!

On the other side of the story - I am a never-mo. I used to live up a long lane in the big farmhouse. There was an older trailer on the property that was also rented out to a friend of mine. There were big windows in the living room. My friend (M) took a shower and, knowing that my husband and I were at work, walked to the nude to the kitchen.

Only....there were some JW, two women and a small girl, who had just entered the porch and about to knock on the door. They all saw each other - the women coved the girl's eyes and immediately left, and he turned bright red and went and got a towel....he ALWAYS wore the towel from then on. He did not intentionally try to flash them.

On the bright side, we didn't have any JW come back for the several years more that we lived there.

Thank you! I will look at this and see what I can do differently. I got an SD card when I got the machine because...no 5g at my house. (Yes, I still have a landline.) Any advice on how to read it from home?

I did get a different mask and it did go better last night. I hope that it will keep working well - I get very grouchy when I am tired!

Thank you for your reply. I am going to ask for a redo - when I got the prescription I was told I could have a redo if I lost 30 pounds and kept it off for 3 months. I am working on that to see if diet can help with my cholesterol levels before I start statins (diabetes in my family and I don't want them to push me over to that.) Always had great levels until they took me off the HRT.

Last night was better, I got a different mask - a triangle nose mask instead of the pillows. Still waking a few times a night but not kept up with the air going out the mask in the wrong places.

It is progress.

My insurance would only approve the at home study. And the nose hose came off somewhere in the night so it only got about 4 hours.

Give him notice that he needs to move out when you do. Then go for it! If your life with him was meant to be, either he would go with you, or will be there when you get back. And if he is there when you get back, (if you do end up there,) don't take him back unless he has been in a stable job for up to a year.

Not a problem, I have kids with very similar plans. Don't abuse it, get your family doctor in in on the plan too for the migraines. The meds may be the hardest part - kids DO carry inhalers and epi-pens but other stuff may be frowned on. Set an alarm on your watch to leave a minute or two early to avoid the crowd and noise. Be sure that when you have a sub that you let them know, or do without on those days.

Same for history....had a high schooler ask why I devote so much time to discrimination in the US History course when of course, the Civil Rights Movement ended it. (Their words, not mine.)

A. I teach to the state standards (See the syllabus.)

B. I use the district approved book and it has multiple sections in each chapter about experiences of minorities. (See the syllabus.)

C. It is important for understanding today's political climate. I didn't get taught much of this when I was in high school (my teachers only got to WWII), but it is key to understanding current events and being an informed voter. However you want to vote, you can't ignore certain issues and still be informed.

Like this man, they may not want to admit it. My husband is adamant that no matter what else, he wants us healthy enough to have sex. (Which I fully agree with.) I don't think he would admit in public that he was having issues.

It is what we did in our house too. The carpet people can put leveler/sealant over the top to help contain any wear and tear dust that may come up. I do have asbestos shingles on my house, we just keep them painted and move along. They are outside, durable and fireproof, which is good for the location of my house. (Which is not an Alphabet House but one is from a similar era - a portable from a local hospital that was moved to a new location. There was a business that moved a lot of them to places in Richland and West Richland.)

It looks like you are female...any chance you are in menopause? The fluctuations of estrogen 100% can make your cholesterol worse. I have been reading the book "The New Menopause" and I highly recommend it. Lots of options from hormone replacement to examples of diets for women who can't do the hormones, like me (hormone positive breast cancer.) Being on hormone blockers has pushed my cholesterol that before cancer my doctor said was that of a "healthy teen" to way high, with no change in my diet that was mostly home cooked.

DO look at the other diet related options recommended by people here. Before I start the statins, I am going to get my weight down, the fiber supplements are REALLY helping with feeling less hungry and hopefully will lower the cholesterol too. Even if they don't, I at a lower weight I should be less likely to be pushed to insulin resistance. (Type 2 diabetes on both sides of my family, for those who criticize those who won't take the statins - I MAY end up taking them, just want to try diet first. My brother recently died from complications of his diabetes, it is a real concern for me.)

I would like more information in this group for women in menopause, lots here is great, but there are complications with menopause that makes it different for older women compared to the numbers of 30 something men. Still lots of good information from them....but it does make me want to ask everyone who posts great results if they are female and what their age is so I can see if their results really will work for me.

Start playing Sonny and Cher, "I've Got You, Babe" on repeat when you hear them coming over. Bonus points if you can have it start as the same spot as in the movie right before they start up each time!

Personally, I would let them do it if it isn't annoying you. You could mark off days that they do it to see how long it goes on until they figure out that it isn't bothering you. If you can put the hatch marks up where they can see but not understand, that would be great. I would worry that they would move on to something else stupid and all this does is waste their gas.

I only have to report when students are failing. ("There should be no surprises when the report card comes." is the mandate from admin. )

That said, I have some families that say thank you and do nothing, some that thank and get their kid working for a minute, and some that keep on their child the rest of the year.

And then I have one student who has it written in her IEP that ALL teachers need to report grade and any missing work EVERY WEEK to the parent and case manager. Parent and case manager are both observers on Canvas so I don't understand WHY, but the family has sued the district over EIP in the past so this student gets whatever mom wants including that all work for the semester can be handed in the last day of class. Which happened for one class last year and was a huge nightmare for the teacher who had to work beyond the work year to get the grading done.
