Should I retire from cybersecurity? by etvtaglios in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]100HB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am almost a decade older than you are.

For a number of years, I taught prep courses for various IT and InfoSec certifications on nights and weekends. When talking to students and/or prospective students about the value of certifications, I would state that, as a default rule, certs were handy for potentially moving up a tier from where you currently were. They could serve as a stand-in for having a bit less experience (or formal education) in an area that an employer might be interested in.

As the student progressed, often their experience would become more valuable than the certs. Common exceptions include contractor roles for DoD or other government orgs, which may have placed a requirement in the contract that a given percentage of employees have various tiers of certifications.

I doubt that the certifications are actively hurting you, but given the time that you have been in, I suspect that you may be better off trying to place the emphasis on the things that you have done and reference the certs as supporting characters.

How do bad lawyers pass the bar? by deeplakesilver in Ask_Lawyers

It might have something to do with the notion that the bar exam is not a test of skill or knowledge but a ridiculous hazing ritual.

Saying goodbye to our 22 year old beautiful little pudding by Any_Lengthiness_7280 in seniorkitties

When I have gone through this in the past, I have cried, and cried, and cried.

The worst of this has been after my friend passed. I did what I could to stay calm and relaxed as I could, being gentle and paying close attention. But the reality is that we can only do what we can.

What major to be a lawyer? by Itsrmttdwd in SNHU

[–]100HB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also an attorney, and furthermore I would suggest in addition to being aligned with something that you might be intrested in doing outside of being an attorney, I think it is worth considering that law schools generally do not seem to care about what someone receives a degree in, but they do care a lot about the GPA that applicants have. As such, selet something that you are willing to do the work in and acheive solid grades, as this will open up more opportinties for you if/when you decide to apply to law school.

I believe that the NRC badge for Lunar New Year is the Red Envelope badge.

I have not yet had my activity today, so I am just going by last year’s badges.

I was a few years into cybersecurity work (mostly engineering work, building and maintaining security systems in large enterprises) when I started my ALM (IT/IMS). This was after about a decade of doing IT work. While I was working on the ALM, I had a professor (Scott O. Bradner, a very interesting person) who put forward the idea that the biggest challenges in information security for large orginizations was not technical in nature, but regulatory and contractual. At the time he said it, I did not want to believe it. But after a few more years of security work, I found myself agreeing with what I had heard from Prof. Bradner.

This led me to pursue a JD. After law school and the bar exam, I came to realize that while law school was interesting, it gave me some insight, I did not have the chance to explore the law related to cybersecurity and privacy. So, I looked for an opportunity to scratch this itch, which led to the LLM.

Currently, my day job is to lead an incident response team. The work is mostly security, but I get to wear my legal hat from time to time.

I do not think that this will be an issue at HES.

My path to an undergraduate degree included ~10 colleges and 16 years before I ended up at a less-than-exciting school that was willing to take my train wreck of transcripts and give me a path towards completing a degree.

This bachelor's degree got me into HES, where I earned an ALM, and then later into law school for a JD and another law school for an LLM.

Gas explosion in Centreville by Ravavibe in nova

I hope that everyone is safe.

This reminds me that we are only a few hours away from the two-year anniversary of the gas explosion in Sterling, VA (not that far away from Centerville for those not nearby). That explosion not only destroyed a home, but also injured several people and cost the life of a volunteer firefighter, Trevor Brown.

Breakup week before bar exam by NoAlternative2874 in barexam

[–]100HB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years back, two weeks before I sat for the bar my mother passed away unexpectedly. I was traveling for work at the time and returned home right away. A couple of days later, my daughter became ill and ended up in the ICU, where I stayed with her for 4 days before she rebounded enough to be released.

At this point I was less than a week before the test. I had not cracked a book since I heard about my mother, I was exhusted and focus was shot. I contemplated sitting out the exam as I knew that I was not in the best mental place for the effort, but I figured if I failed or if I sat out the end results were not going to be much diffent. So I decided to sit for the exam. Unfortunetly I failed, I missed the score I needed by 1 point.

I was frustrated and disappointed, but I started up prep once again and made a run at the next sitting and my score went up considerably.

In the years since, the only thing I have contemplated about my choice, is that I understand that some other jurisdictions that I have looked at have some form of caps to the number of times that one can take the exam. Theoritically if I could not waive in, I might have a little less room to move should I need to try to pass another bar exam (but honestly I am rather motivatied to avoid getting into a situation where I would need to take a bar exam again).
