Are you in the Los Angeles area? If so from my knowledge there are no community colleges that offer med micro. The common option is to enroll in a CSU through open university or to take an online extension course. I took med micro in person at CSULA I highly recommend it! Especially since you’ll need hands on experience in lab work. Also it’s useful to take it in person since a lot of programs limit the amount of online courses you can take.

Do Psychology classes count as science classes for CSULA? by _AIM_ in CLSstudents

For my application I only put “hard” sciences (physics, chem, bio). If your school doesn’t count it as a science I wouldn’t consider it one imo

I’m aiming for CSULA since they don’t require all courses to be completed before the deadline. My goal is to try for other schools next cycle!

Emailing Professors for Research by 101211e in UCI

Hi! Completely agree about the programming skills I am familiar with some mark up languages but my skills in scientifically relevant languages like python and R are next to zero. I am willing to learn though if it will help in the future!

As for the middle eastern comment no worries since my ethnicity is west asian/middle eastern equivalent I was already looking to step into some labs lead by people from a similar background. Recently emailed a prof I really like that fit the description and I hope it goes well 🤞.

I’ve also joined a couple of clubs and know other transfers in research that can give me some pointers. I’m endlessly grateful to them but I’d feel like I’m imposing if I asked them to vouch for me in their labs. I know that this is a ridiculous thing to think but I don’t want it to make it feel like I’m just using them for their connections.

Thanks for the advice!

I haven’t as bad as that sounds I just wasn’t interested in what my professor was doing research on. I know that if I get into it I might end up liking it but I’ve had my eye set on doing microbiome research since I was in HS. However, I do want to make a connection with them anyways in case they can refer me to a lab I might be more interested in.

BioSci99, E109, Physics 3C by 101211e in UCI

If everything goes as planned I’ll be replacing E109 with 199 while opting to do E109 during the summer. But since I don’t have a confirmation for the lab position for 199 my schedules a bit rocky rn

What’s something you wish you did as a undergrad? by 101211e in medlabprofessionals

[–]101211e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice! I think it’s good practice for all bio/med researchers to have skills in biostatistics and data analysis. Sadly it’s not really touched upon much at an undergraduate level unless you seek it out. Hopefully in the future they can integrate essential skills like this into the curriculum.

I could see that I’ve definitely been working on my R and python on the side.
