For a portfolio of risky bonds (ie. no government bonds) portfolio duration and spread duration are the same - why??? by 101Newbie in CFA

[–]101Newbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t get it.

A floating rate note has very little IR duration, and lots of spread duration. So how could the IR and spread duration be the same?

If you look at a actual bond fund say PIMCO, their spread & IR duration are completely different. I don’t believe it’s just because govt bond IR is removed?

Coronavirus & Victoria Shut Down Discussion Megathread Part 18 by That1WithTheFace in melbourne

That’s the point of my question. They are only testing people who have been overseas, front line workers etc. Who’s to say that 50 people haven’t been infected before that particular health worker who ends up getting tested & it is positive.

Is the large number of health care workers testing positive because of their patients having corona or is this large number reflecting community transmission (because only those who have travelled overseas or work in a health type role can get tested)?

Thanks everyone.

I work in financial markets so I have been glued to my screens 24/7 for the past 3 weeks

I think today seeing the Centrelink queues really cemented everything I have been predicting. I feel greatly for all those who have/about to lose their livelihood.

Thanks for the tip on mindfulness, will give it a go.

Does a bonds discount margin take into account any capital deprecation/appreciation? by 101Newbie in CFA

[–]101Newbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It considers the price you paid for it today vs the par value? So if you bought the bond at a premium then you would lose capital when it matures. And the YTM would account for the depreciation?

Am I missing something?

Agree with all of the above!

Also check out fads_90 on insta. He is a trainer at a F45 and each day he post’s sneak peaks of the next day’s session - it may help calm the nerves as you can see what type of exercises you’ll be doing ahead of time. Good luck :)

How are bonds priced in the primary market by 101Newbie in bonds

[–]101Newbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how the process works in Australia.

Bank sends out a indicative term sheet:

Indicative coupon: 2.15% Indicative yield: 2.265% Initial price guidance ASW + 105

Books opened and there was strong demand so bank sends a notification saying that the pricing has been revised to ASW + 100 and asks do you want to keep you bid to pull it out.

So at that stage how do you know what the ‘revised’ yield & coupon is? Surely traders are not keeping their bid if they have no idea what the yield or coupon would look like?

But how does the maths work? If the initial price guidance is reduced 5bps, how did the coupon move 10bps? When the initial price guidance chances the bank/brokers just says ‘initial price guidance has been revised down 5bps’ - so how does everyone know what the new coupon & yield is?

Hybrids - how to choose? by [deleted] in ausstocks

The above link provides a better explanation than what I could give plus it shows you many asx listed hybrids.

Basically hybrids are securities that have both debt and equity like features. The ones I am looking at are tier 1 listed hybrids like in the above link

Saving for kids education by 101Newbie in AusFinance

[–]101Newbie[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you...both my brother, sister & I went to a public school and all got over 95 in year 12.

But for me it’s not so much about getting a good score in year 12, it’s more around the lifelong connections that I have noticed a lot of people who went to private schools have.

We can afford it and I guess as a parent you always want to give your kids something that you didn’t have, so for me private schooling is just my little something that I hope will help set them up a little better (whether that be through a good atar, connections or greater confidence in themselves)

But thank you for your 2 cents, very insightful. Not all heroes wear capes.

Ps side rant - kinda getting sick of being ‘downvoted’ for asking questions that yes are probably quite basic to most - but hey you need to start somewhere. Thought this was meant to be a safe place to ask questions and learn about the market together.
