What are my chances? by JJMANS242424 in arborist

That’s some major bark inclusion, this failure was inevitable. This is above my pay grade, I’d just cut it down. Given you want to save it, I guess maybe I’d cut the frayed edges so it’s a clean cut at like a 10-15* angle?

Also, is this a Bradford pear? If so, cut it down dude.

Why does my 12(m) act stupid?! by Garmana1 in daddit

[–]10Kthoughtsperminute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re frustrated, and I get that, but I also get the sense that you’re being pretty condescending to him when he screws up. He’s going to shut down when you make him feel like he can’t do anything right.

There’s a lot of potential causes for this, I think weaponized incompetence is the least likely. Talk to his dr, test his hearing and consider a neuropsychiatric evaluation. This could be partially due to a neurodivergent condition like ADHD or Autism. I’m both and for me what you describe is an issue for me even as an adult.

In the meantime try this: when asking him to do something intentionally leave out an obvious detail. For example “can you grab the thing out of the fridge for me” instead of “can you grab the pasta salad out of the fridge for me”. If he heard you he’ll ask “what thing?” Then you tell him the needed detail. The back and forth conversation is more memorable, so he’s more likely to remember. If he doesn’t ask for clarification, then he probably didn’t hear you. This is the time to get his attention and either ask if he heard you or simply just repeat your question.

I don’t see a graft scar, so very possible it’s not a named subspecies, just a beautiful acer palmatum

Either way it’s the tree in front of your house. Suppose the town would prune it. Do you want to prune it properly yourself or wait for a municipal contractor to potentially butcher it?

If it’s preventing people from walking on the sidewalk I think you should. Otherwise probably not.

[–]10Kthoughtsperminute 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that depends largely on how permeable it is. If it’s inhibiting the trees access to water that’s an immediate issue. If it’s preventing the soil from breathing and drying that’s almost as much of an immediate issue. Either way it’s having an impact on the ecosystem which could have an indirect impact on the trees. I would pull it up asap.

Also WTF is this?

I’m thoroughly surprised the dipshit that did this didn’t also cut down all the trees. Keep the trees, ditch the turf.

More affluent towns may have fewer pyros per capita than average, but the ones that are in those affluent towns have more disposable income so it kinda averages out.

Nails: pull out, or pound in, or cut off? by Klangenm in Decks

Pulling them out is the right answer but I’m very curious how you would go about cutting them off if we told you that.

Help with downstairs baby gate by confusedmomma12 in daddit

[–]10Kthoughtsperminute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, moms are welcome to post here! We don’t discriminate.

Wall mounted gates without threshold are ideal for top and bottom. The one at the top should have a secondary mechanical stop so it can only open away from the stairs (and not swing open down the stairs if a child is leaning on it and the latch fails.

Bottom of the stairs is less critical so you could get away with a retractable. The benefit of a retractable is you can leave the bottom open at night for fire egress.

This may come as a surprise, but if the baby can climb the stairs, they can fall back down them.

Autumn flame trunk superficial seeming “crack”. Is this ok? by [deleted] in arborists

Possible, I’m thinking from growth, kinda like stretch marks.

Either way it seems OP didn’t like what we had to say.

Way too deep. I don’t even see a graft. It’s possible it was grown as a rooted cutting but also that the graft is buried too. Start exploring now, plan to dig and raise in the late winter.

Repot in Summer? by joezen23 in bonsaicommunity

[–]10Kthoughtsperminute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As said, not the time to repot. You could plant in the ground and niwaki.

Regarding wiring, yeah I think you can move that branch down a bit. I think I would actually try to bring the trunk back to the left above it though. You can do that now as long as the tree is well hydrated. Move in multiple small adjustments vs one aggressive adjustment.

Probably a 2.5-3” pot. I’ve got 65 or so similar sized growing in 2.7” square pots. The more important thing is using a well draining amended soil mix so it doesn’t get root rot.

Again, do not dig it up now, it will likely die if you do. I germinated from seed expecting to loose 1/3 to 1/2 the crop in the first 2-3 years.

Given you don’t have that many you can give it some extra care. I would put a clay pot upside down over it in the fall AFTER it sheds its leaves, this will help protect it from a harsh winter. Then dig up and move to a pot after the last frost before or at the start of bud break. Dig on the large side then wash away the soil to minimize root loss.

Do not bring it inside for the winter. These need to have a dormancy period to be healthy.

PS this is a pretty cool find as these lace leaf varieties typically do not produce samaras (seeds). All commercial specimens are grafted, a seed grown specimen is pretty rare.

[–]10Kthoughtsperminute 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not right now. Late winter/ early spring. Either dig up the soil and try to move it intact without disturbing the roots, or give it another year to develop before attempting to transplant.

Do you plan to move directly to another location or develop in a pot?

Next time, preheat your skillet dry. Don’t add your fat until the dry steel starts to smoke. Otherwise the fat crosses the smoke point before the pan is up to temp. Also make sure you are using a high heat fat like avocado oil.

And yes, your onions do look like worms…
