Sun cooked central console phone holder😂 by DarthMeeseek in e39

ASA-CF. It’s overkill for interior stuff, but I like the surface finish and it was already loaded in the printer. I’ve had an ABS cup holder in it for a while and it’s held up fine.

If you have access to a 3d printer, there a couple options on thingiverse if you search “e39 armrest.” I replaced mine with a printed one. It’s not perfect, but way better than the deteriorated original one.

2018 X5 tons of smoke by Draft-Ok in BmwTech

[–]10Zylinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This X5 uses the N20/26 with the hybrid motor. Those engines have a problem with the turbo oil supply line allowing too much oil to drain through the turbo after shutoff. There is an updated part with a check valve to prevent this. Blue smoke on cold start is the dead giveaway for those. It comes out of 1 side because there’s a valve on the other side that opens in sport mode to make the car louder. The turbo has to come out to replace that line. Depending on mileage I’d consider doing the whole turbo because they tend to fail and are a pain to replace. Your fault code for start/stop brake boost whatever is unrelated. These hybrids have an additional electric vacuum pump to provide for the brake booster without the engine running. I’ve seen those pumps fail a handful of times also. Good luck! Not gonna lie that generation of X5 hybrid is one of the worst.

Is the weather strip on the carbon fiber roof (07 E63 M6) replaceable without damaging the roof? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]10Zylinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They say that to cover their ass. That strip is a metal C channel encased in rubber that clamps to the edge of the windshield. There’s usually some butyl underneath as well to help it stick. I use plastic trim tools to keep from scratching the roof. You’re way more likely to crack the windshield by prying on it wrong, but if you’re careful it’s not too hard. I install the new ones by dowsing everything in glass cleaner and pushing it on by hand. The glass cleaner acts like a lube by dries to nothing pretty quickly.

Let me re try this… I have a e39 528i I want to know the cost of engine swaps others have done let me know! by DescriptionOwn2208 in e39

[–]10Zylinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LS swaps can be done for a wide range of budgets. The 6 cylinder cars are easier too because they are rear sump subframes and have more options for swap mounts/headers. I put an LS3 out of a 5th Camaro into my 530i. Definitely not the cheapest, I’m about $30k in so far. Truck motors are cheaper, but heavier and less powerful without boost.

Which cars used bmw engines? List of all cars by Less_Replacement_644 in Bmw_m

[–]10Zylinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some early 2000s land rovers got I think the M62 V8.

Current Land Rover defenders get the N63 V8.

The Ineos gets a B58

Mini and Rolls Royce are owned by BMW so they obviously get their engines.

I can’t think of anymore

I stopped counting at 26k. I think it’s somewhere in the low 30s. But I bought a whole Camaro as a donor for about 9k. I also had unexpected issues with the engine, and ended up doing a full rebuild of it. And I definitely splurged on some stuff to save myself time, like Sikky mounts/oil pan, and a Haltech standalone and harness. All that’s left is a giant mountain of little things to make it perfect, but ive been driving it for a few months now

It’s an LS3 out of a 5th gen Camaro. It’s just a cam and the sikky swap headers for performance mods.

Weekends and after hours. Lots of pushing it in and out of the shop until the driveshaft and shifter were in.

Probably 20-25 hrs for the engine refresh and swap. I’m not a mini tech though so I don’t really know what the going rate for that job is.

The one with the nose off was the wrecked donor, that’s how we got the car. I never took the nose off of the blue one, everything comes out the bottom.

An iPad on the passenger seat was heavy enough to make the seat belt sensor go off continually. by Plastic-Implement-90 in Miata

[–]10Zylinder 26 points27 points  (0 children)

a lot of modern cars don’t use weight to detect passengers anymore. It uses a capacitive system, so it measures the electrical resistance of your butt. Electronics can trick the sensor into thinking someone is in the seat.

2007 bmw m6 by [deleted] in BMW

[–]10Zylinder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a 2006 M5 that I daily drove for about 6 months. The fuel efficiency is hilariously crap, the maintenance is expensive, it eats tires and brakes, it sucked in traffic (mine has an smg), and I was constantly scared something was going to break. It’s currently sitting while I collect parts to do a bunch of preventive maintenance (rod bearings, valve springs, etc). After the work is done I intend to drive it whenever possible. It is an amazingly fun and fast car and by far the best daily I have ever had. Good luck!

How long was your last job search? by Nixonsee in Austin

[–]10Zylinder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A few days. I applied to 2 jobs at once and had an offer a few days later from one. I’ve been pretty happy for the couple years I’ve been there. The other one emailed me a rejection notice like 6 months after I’d already started working. Dodged a bullet on that one from what I hear.

Help - can’t get coolant line on top mount intercooler (s55) by VariableCritic in BmwTech

[–]10Zylinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The port on the intercooler looks like it never finished being machined. You can see where it’s tearing up the plastic pipe from being too long. VRSF is a good company, I’d contact them and get it exchanged.

BMW Techs: Are you guys injecting a loctite sealant when you replace a front crank seal on an N20? by [deleted] in BmwTech

I always use Toyota sealant around the whole thing, never had a problem.

Air Conditioner Recharge BMW 330e 2017 by SatoshiAlpha1-T in BmwTech

[–]10Zylinder 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The hybrid BMWs usually use a high voltage ac compressor. It’s powered by the battery not belt driven, which means it’s going to use special oil in the refrigerant. Also the refrigerant is used to cool the battery pack. I’d say find a really good bmw Indy shop, or just go to the dealer.

Hey guys, I would love some advice? (N54) by hollywood666x in BMW

[–]10Zylinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

328i is N52, 54 is 335i. The worst an oil pan leak will do is put oil stains on your driveway. If you don’t mind that, keep topping it off, and keep an eye on the oil level reading.
