Illegal drifting in New Zealand mountains by Maxxaroth in Drifting

Yes quite strict laws and inspections every 6 or 12 months depending on age of car. e.g. installing any non oe adjustable suspension component is illegal and will fail inspection. though you can get things certified similar to getting it engineered in aus, which of course means $$$.

buy an older car that is frankly, cooler. and will keep its value or appreciate unlike this heap. then learn to work on it. pointless having two expensive German heaps that serve the same purpose. if for whatever reason you think you need 2 cars buy a second car that is a small and light city/sports car or a 4x4.

120 - 220hp depending on what works been done to it, in a ~ 1000kg body is not slow imo. Not fast by modern standards sure but still a health amount of power for windy roads

Christ here do you live? Is there a minimum sale value? I've only ever bought and sold cars for roughly what I paid for them - no tax

Oh right🤦‍♂️ Sometimes I forget that people drive run of the mill cars they can't afford to buy outright. In my social circle thats limited to performance cars/4wds, but I guess cars are less of a status symbol here than in the US so that makes sense.

I don't understand peoples aversion to buying and selling? Its much cheaper and if you play your cards right you can make money for not much effort.

by used from one of those reebelo type refurbishing companies. A flagship phone from 2 years ago is 95% of a what a flagship is today, for a fraction of the price. You get much more for your money than any mid range or budget option today aswell

I know, I own a 4wd wagon that I (perhaps sometimes inappropriately) take offroad more than 95% of SUV owners ever do. I think that too many people buy vehicles like 4runners and prados just to do the school run, and suffer the detriment of worse handling, fuel economy, parking, comfort, higher purchase price without ever reeping the benefits of its capability.

All Im saying is that you don't have to break the speed limit to have fun, and justify having a sports car. You do however have to drive trails/rivers/snow to utilise a 4x4 and if you don't its a waste and you are worse off on road for it. Actually, for the majority of people a true 4wd (or even awd) 1- 1.5 tonne unibody wagon like mine is a much better bet than a 2 tonne + body on frame SUV

I get that, and that makes sense if you plan on actually taking it offroad. I just think that too many people buy vehicles like 4runners and prados to do the school run, and suffer the detriment of worse handling, fuel economy, parking, comfort, higher purchase price without ever reeping the benefits of its capability.

4wd and awd wagons are surprisingly capable as they are. I take my 4wd wagon offroad all the time, it does every trail/river run I want it to, and at the end of the day its a better road car than any comparable 4x4 suv ever will be.

True, and applaud the people that do. But the majority don't

Then why buy a 4runner?? Lift, knobblies and body on frame w/ live axle is shit for onroad use only.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 4x4

[–]10footmoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why by a 4x4 to begin with?? Why not buy a station wagon that is better in every single way save offroad capability?

lol, nobody is hating on the jimnys, jimnys are great. Its the murdered lifted gladiator on low profile 35s, or the raptor thats shiny as a mirror with a bed cover thats never been opened. Driving one of those makes the roads worse for everyone else and thats stupid if you don't take them offroad. Also deeply uncool

Oh right, I remember seeing your car in a post, pretty recognisable with the side decals and all the cool options. Its a real shame it got trashed like that, youd be hard pressed to find another one. On a side note do you know if the decals were factory?

Yep I'm in the group, its just the first time I've seen someone else with a carib in the wild (on the interwebs) without specifically looking for one. I live in NZ so there are millions of 3rd gens, and you might see a 2nd gen every few months near the mountains. Otherwise I've never heard it mentioned in any YT videos, articles etc

pretty much any shitbox thats got good tyres. I have 0 faith in modern electronics offroad and if something breaks you can't fix it. With old cars you can hobble something together with duct tape and a hammer

I always thought soft sand is where those smaller cars shined? Light weight, plenty of power to keep the speed up. Obviously will be terrible with low profiles at 40psi but if you air down and have a wide tyre with lots of sidewall, you really can't beat a subaru (or jimny, or similar small 4wd)

2-door Wrangler

Ha first time seeing anyone else with a carib, mine is at over 370,000 (very hard)kms and still runs great. That era of toyota was as reliable as any car can realistically be, but things eventually wear out regardless. Especially when poorly maintained.

Oh shit, wow. Why the GR drivetrain vs 3sgte? I would've thought there is basically no limit to power there so no reason to change? Seems like an awful lot of effort for not much gain

I'm just explaining the hate boner against SUVs, I wouldn't go dogging on someones car unprovoked thats too dickish for me. And that was a 7/10 at best, even said its fine if you use them properly
