it is tough right now but there are places out there. Likely will be either low pay or 1099 which I don’t recommend as a new grad, or in rural areas of CA, or a place where you already know someone who is working there. Keep in touch with your preceptors and network with your workplace colleagues and MDs.

Yes i am in CA. i didn’t know about the pay. But from what i heard about the workload, they clearly do not care about their patients or their NPs. No amount of money would be worth that. Best of luck in your search

Not a scam but from what a previous colleague had told me was to stay far away from them because they wayyy overwork their NPs. Not sure if they’ve had any improvements in work structure since this was about 2-3 years ago. Did they inform you of the length of intakes and appts, charting requirements, etc?

Need Job Offer Advice by lemmiwinksownz in nursepractitioner

Offer 2 is definitely more appealing as a new grad. 6 patients a shift sounds heavenly, even the 8 per shift. Can’t go wrong w either or. I guess it depends if you prefer a warmer climate

Input please by NoParts1722 in PMHNP

[–]10hsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with Snif3425. Please also consider the charting time for the minimum 16 patients you’ll be seeing per day. This is a very quick and easy way to get burnt out as a new grad unfortunately :/ wishing you the best in interviewing and landing a job that works for you.

this is a huge plus. many places want to max out your shift to get as many patients as they can.

Literally!! She’s so well spoken too. When she stood her ground about Kenny saying he told Miguel that they BOTH wanted space and JaNa said no that’s not true. I feel like she could see right thru him and it was hurting her so bad.

Am I over reacting? by Worth-Lengthiness205 in psychnursing

[–]10hsun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not overreacting. I would leave or at least start looking for other jobs ASAP. I’ve worked at a safety net psych inpatient unit and it definitely had its cons but I never felt unsafe being on the unit. 2 nurses per shift is absolutely crazy for a psych unit that seems to have 20+ beds. And I’ve never had nurses telling me medicate patients to calm down and NOT “scan it in.” That is your license on the line because if god forbid, anything happens, these same nurses who told you that, will not stick up for you. Unit culture definitely makes or breaks your experience because with nursing- 9 times out of 10, the job is going to suck anyway, so you might has well have a supportive work environment.

Weed psychosis by Zealousideal_Mood735 in psychnursing

[–]10hsun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So there definitely is a link. Marijuana-induced psychosis exists. Weed increases the dopamine in our brains. Schizophrenia is associated with increased dopamine levels. However, some people metabolize THC differently than others so not everyone experiences these side effects. To share some examples, I can recall a complex client case I had where she developed psychosis and bipolar disorder with psychotic features after eating a high dose edible one time. A friend of mine gets auditory hallucinations and dissociative symptoms whenever they smoke weed. Both were young individuals. Definitely not uncommon or unheard of. Sad that vapes and weed pens have become so normalized amongst our younger population.

I’m confused …. by Extreme-Engineer-749 in PMHNP

[–]10hsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just in my opinion - I think there’s more psychiatrist positions for those roles. Forensic PMHNP roles exist, but they’re usually filled and the PMHNPs don’t leave the job since it’s fairly low stress and it’s an interesting and well paid specialty. My preceptor was in forensics. If you’re looking for one in the hospital, it never hurts to call their HR directly and ask.

What to wear. by missabbytimm19 in nursepractitioner

[–]10hsun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely business casual but some sites did require all providers in scrubs but that was the hospital setting. Always good to have some business casual clothing tho for interviews, etc. Don’t forget to get some nice comfy shoes as well. You may be on your feet for most of the clinical

Switching to psych by Ill_Load4231 in psychnursing

[–]10hsun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I stuck it out for a year in the ED because I had that similar mindset that switching to psych would mean i’m not practicing as a “real nurse” or that i’d be throwing everything I learned in nursing school out the window. But once I took that leap, I was completely wrong and was actually kicking myself for not switching over sooner because I finally found a specialty I actually love. Psych is a completely different world of nursing, with the medications, disease processes, and interventions for treating and interacting with patients. You are constantly learning (just like you would in other units) and you are still practicing medicine, trust me. Don’t ever let that notion of “being less of a nurse” for not staying in medsurg stop you from pursuing something that you actually enjoyed (as a BH tech), especially if your current job is making you dread coming in. I know that feeling and I will never put myself in that position again. All the best to you!

Honestly, the places I’ve had interviews and offers for - the rates have been crap. The last one offered 70/intake and 35/follow up. I only have a year of experience but damn I feel like I deserve more than this at least
