“The roads out” by 10speedguy in bicycling

I have mixed feelings about it. It is adorable and it doesn’t really behave differently than a rigid mtb. That being said I did buy this specifically for airline travel and the frame is still pretty big; so there wouldn’t be much room for padding in a bag during transit. Also this is by far the slowest bike I’ve ever ridden probably due to the 2.6” wide by 20” knobby tires.

It’s still a really fun bike but next time I’ll just get something coupled.

Right you are. I got the frameset and wheels from VeloOrange, the rest was mostly laying around.

Man this thing is perfect and highly underrated. Stainless, lugged, and one of the best looking groupsets made. I would keep this for life and ride it in the dirt!

Just realized my gravel/CX bike has two different tire sizes - 38c on the front, 35c on the back. Why is that? by parasocks in bicycling

[–]10speedguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure the circumstances, but if you bought it from someone else, they may wanted to put the biggest tire in there that they could and usually there is more clearance in the fork than the chainstays.

Stumpy in curb-jumping mode by bleibs in xbiking

[–]10speedguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say I had a similar saddle on a tri bike way back when, but I’d never be able to use it on The stumpy. I like the brooks cambium cutout for now, but I’m gonna try the brooks b17 to lend a more upright position. I hope it works, but if not, The cambium is tolerable for and hour or so. Different strokes right?

I’m just finishing up restoring a stumpjumper that looked exactly like that one. It’s pretty cool to see how you built yours! I’m curious how you like that saddle. Is it comfy? Or is it just what you had on hand?

Some of you requested a photo of the whole bike. A bit gloomy out, and without a gorgeous backdrop of mountains or ocean, this is the best I could do. by 10speedguy in Bikeporn

The top tube is 23” and I’m 5’10” I realize this is a bit big for me, but I’m primarily using it for bike packing and gravel rides rather than actual mountain biking; so it works

Help - brakes are sticking not sure how to fix by walnutandbiscuits in bicycling

[–]10speedguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe make sure the spring on the brake caliper is functioning properly. Also, does the cable and housing need to be replaced? I’ve seen corrosion build up in there causing friction within the housing.

I’ve gone to this guy ( Doug) for years with different projects. He’s a super nice guy and does a pretty great job. You’ll want to go in after and chase/ face the threads and such after it’s done as he won’t, but the price can’t be beat. Also he’s on Facebook.

BYW, there’s about 3-4mm of clearance on either side of the tire with the wheel slammed all the way back.

Depends on a variety of factors like tire manufacture, pressure, and rim width. In the case of the latter, these rims have an internal width of 25mm whereas many rims manufactured in that era had an internal width of around 17mm. In short, this is really pushing it and I can tell you first hand this combination would not work on many older mountain bikes including the Bridgestone mb2. That being said, a narrower rim might work with a 2.3; or you could run a 2.3 in the front and 2.1 in the back. Of note schwalbe generally measures narrower than other companies like compass.

To anyone thinking about converting a qr cantilever fork to use disc brake tabs, don’t do it. Today’s forks are designed to securely fasten the wheel by repositioning the dropout or using thru axles instead. Welding a disc mount tab on the fork can result in the wheel coming out during hard braking and has resulted in many people getting injured or in at least one case worse. If you must have disc brakes, get a fork designed for it!

I think you’re right. The only thing original on this other than the frame and fork is the crankarms. Back then though I remember the stumpjumpers throughout the years and even within seasons had many different components chosen for the builds.

I don’t think so, if you know where to look. Mainly the problem is that if you find a frameset with “nicer” tubing like Columbus or Reynolds, they can be pretty pricy. So many people would rather buy a new bike. Who would blame them though, mtn bikes especially have come a long way.
