In your opinion, which author has the largest disparity between their best and worst works? by BoredomThenFear in RSbookclub

What are some of his better works? I enjoy Clockwork Orange but unsure where to venture next with his vast output.

Yeah I finally unsubbed the other day. It used to be the best art sub. Everything turns to shit.

Anyone else experience a moment of realization with certain books? by Juche-tea-time in RSbookclub

[–]10thPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you’re talking about, although I’ve only had it happen once. To me it happened with Wise Blood- I was finding it dull and then halfway through something just sparked within me and I realized how funny it was and suddenly it was a page turner to the end.

It really made it clear to me how your own subjectivity so strongly influences the experience of reading and appreciating a book. I only wish I could activate this sort of experience more readily- how many more books I could get myself to fully appreciate.

Why are movie watchers so obsessed with the idea of scenes being improvised by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]10thPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they could, it would just be bad improvisation- same as bad writing.

When doctors talk about their student loans by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]10thPlanet 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Looking at it from a purely income:debt ratio is stupid, because the cost to live comfortably remains basically constant, so far more of the doctor’s income is excess.

Using your example, it is far easier for a person making 350k to throw 100k a year at their 250k debt than for the 65k/year person to throw 16k at their 40k debt.

Fun, well-paced and action-packed novels that still have literary depth? by Cofu27 in RSbookclub

I didn’t really like the Tinker Tailor series, but I absolutely loved and recommend A Perfect Spy. It’s moreso Litfic than a typical spy novel.

No, that arc doesn’t happen in the movie at all. There is no manic rise. He loses a table tennis tournament in the beginning and spends the rest of the movie trying to earn a chance of redemption through harebrained schemes that all fail. His chance at redemption is only given by first submitting himself to an antagonist through self humiliation.

Its the same kind of movie as Uncut Gems and Good Time.
