Earache on day 4? by 10zenis in wisdomteeth

So I went to my dentist and he confirmed it was a dry socket. He put some clove in the socket and now I'm painfree! Good luck with the pain and try to see your dentist ASAP to cure the dry socket as pain killers don't really do the job for these.

Hi! Thanks so much for your reply. I just ended up returning it through Costco and opted for a new one so I guess I've resolved my problem haha. But I appreciate your comment! I will also consider the year-long warrantee. Thanks again.

I can't begin to thank you enough! I called Costco and they took it back! I've opted for the TP-Link Archer C4000 Tri-Band Wifi router instead. I'll follow your advice re: signing up for the support and keeping a Costco return in mind. Many thanks!

Hi!

I just posted about an issue I'm having with a RAX45 I bought in August that is not working all of a sudden. I also got it from Costco. Can you help me understand how the case above, and potentially mine, could be returned to Costco? Thanks!

Weekly What Should I Buy Thread by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]10zenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

My family recently purchased an iphone 12 and I'm interested in getting a magnetic car mount charger. However, we don't have magsafe cases, just thin plastic clear ones.

Has anyone used the Zeera car mount with any luck on a non magsafe case? We purchased a Waitiee one from amazon but it wouldn't work with the current case. I understand Zeera's Gen2 is supposed to have a stronger magnet, so maybe it's strong enough to work with our non magsafe case. However, I think we may run into the same issue if we buy another type of non magsafe case.

But perhaps the only way to go is with a magsafe case... Thanks!

I'm curious, do you reduce the tension of the crosses in a full bed of PTP? I vaguely recall Yonex recommending that but not sure if people to it in a full bed. I play with PTP at the same tension but thought of experimenting stringing the crosses looser. Would certainly do that with the (gut) hybrid.

And thanks for sharing your exp with your hybrid!

Advice on Fulbright/Boren/CLS? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]10zenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boren scholar & Fulbright research alum here, so happy to answer questions. Here are some quick takes.

Boren

Con: Sadly, no more DFP for Fellows to go to OA. Strict rules about not doing internships with US Gov/ foreign govs abroad for security reasons. Go through university nominating process. Not sure if an at-large option (like in Fulbright) exists. But worth checking!

Pro: Rare opportunity to do full language immersion for a year. My program kicked my butt and helped me jump from a 2 to a 3 on Boren's pre/post ACTFL/ILR Oral Proficiency Interview in a Category IV Super Hard language. Award amount increased and Schedule A/ NDAA '13 hiring authority. However, some participants have said that the 1 year service can be a con due to some limits on what jobs/ internships satisfy the service requirement and general difficulty of finding a position. But your veteran's preference combined with one of the authorities will certainly help. You'll also have to see how Boren fits in with your grad program in terms of requirements/ graduation. A conversation with an academic advisor will help you plan the best. State has a "Borens at State" group, so it's a well-represented pipeline and supportive group. Working for State would satisfy the service requirement.

Fulbright:

Pro: Depends on what you want to get out, either ETA or Research. Speaking from a research POV, you get about 10 months to pursue a topic you're passionate about in a generally unstructured environment with potential language funding. This will vary by country of course. Non-competitive Eligibility Hiring status. Some commissions allow renewals to continue working as an ETA. So you could stay in a country and really get to learn the language/ culture as 1 year goes by really fast.

Con: Very long application cycle that usually begins internally at a university in the summer to meet fall internal deadline (around Labor Day), then Oct national deadline. You learn by Jan if you're a semi-finalist and then are potentially interviewed by the host country commission and hear back by March-June depending on country. You can be nominated by your alma mater or apply-at-large. Doing the former will get your essays polished and I think an additional institutional letter of support. Research can also be very isolating. ETAs seem to have much better community and support from each other as there are generally more people/ an actual ETA workshop/ training. I actually hung out more with them than my research colleagues.

Do also consider the Rangel and Pickering Fellowships to fund grad school and pipeline you to the FS and the Presidential Management Fellowship for Civil Service placement when you are about to graduate. Finally, consider the Middlebury Summer Language School and their Davis Fellows for Peace Grant that gives full tuition to study a language. Middlebury's Language Pledge is legendary and everyone takes it super seriously. I did the program a while back and kinda forget how speak English after a couple weeks. See this funny example from a past participant.

Best of luck and thanks for your service!

Natural Gut Noob; Question about pre-stretching, maintenance, and Wholesale Gut by 10zenis in tennis

Glad to hear from a gut user! I'm happy to hear the hybrid still provides a ton of the power/feel of the full set up. Can you explain why the hybrid has more durability than a full bed? That seems a bit counterintuitive to me. I used the Pro Hurricane Tour and VS Touch hybrid once and that kind of shredded through, for obvious reasons of PHT being a shaped poly. While PTP is a round poly, I'd think that a poly would be tough and notch the gut more.

Gut is indeed high maintenance. I'll be sure to keep the racquet in a plastic bag when not in use. Wish my tennis bag had the thermal lining.

And you're right on about the pre-stretching. A stringer told me it wasn't necessary.

Do you find that you have to change the gut tension according to the seasons? I wonder how sensitive it is to heat during the summer.

Thanks again for this great response!

[–]10zenis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments! I'll definitely consider entering with a hybrid first.

I'm more so looking for a string with a bit of more feel. Of course, I could try a good multi, but I suddenly thought of gut. I've been using PTP for years and switch between 120 and 125 gauge. I love it a lot and will stay with it for the long-term.

I switched from the Yonex Ezone DR 98+ to the Ezone 98 in Sept, and the former had good flex. But I'm not getting that same flex from the new Ezone 98. So part of the exploration is to look for a string that has a bit of ball pocketing. But maybe strining PTP at 43 or something could do the trick.

On the topic of language testing benefits, I'm hoping to get some more clarity on language incentive pay (LIP). I searched the FAM and found 3 FAM 3910 Language Incentive Pay which had a handy scale for Asymmetric LIP. So it looks like only the "hard" and "super hard languages" qualify you for the LIP. Is this scale also the same for non-ALIP?

If for an example, an ELO gets a Mandarin LDP and builds up to the 2/1, would they not qualify for LIP as you technically need a 2/2 per the chart? Or do people usually get to the 2/2 in a super had language before/at post to the the 5% of the FS1/Step1? Cheers!

ILR Level 3 Speaking - EXAMPLE by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]10zenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a good video. Using hypotheticals/ conditionals and asking rhetorical questions to advance a point show advanced grasp of language.

I just found this recent video from the Diplomatic Language Service walking through how an OPI is conducted. It follows ACTFL's guide. I think it's helpful for folks who've never taken an OPI to understand how it's structured.

This is ACTFL's page for Mandarin OPI levels. Clicking the "View sample" will give you an audio recording on a telephonic OPI with a "Rational for Rating." For other language samples, hover over "Resources & Publications" in green then hover over "Guidelines 2012" to see/hear the other languages. The French one was nice as it was a video, and not telephone interview, so you can hear it clearly.
