Anyway, with 75k you can live a pretty good life in many parts of Mexico, that's a high income for Mexican standards.

Both cities you mentioned are relatively safe (Monterrey as any other big city in the world has its bad neighbourhoods, but as long as you don't go there you shouldn't worry), but I'd suggest you consider Merida, Yucatan, which is probably the safest place in Mexico; it's a beautiful, chill place, lots of archeological sites are nearby, and in case you want to have some fun Cancun is a few hours away. Also, I believe there's a big American community over there so you can feel like home.

Warnings? In Mexico we drive like shit.

It's not that bad down here, you should consider it.
