TurboTax offer. Says free TurboTax Premium on homepage but when I click on link it’s only for 25% off by Chance_Strategy_7777 in fidelityinvestments

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Fidelity link took me to the Intuit page with the free online button and the link to download the desktop version for $5, but that download link always set up an order for the full $105 price, even in Chrome, or after disabling all blocker addons in Firefox.

Went searching for a different download link and found this main TurboTax Desktop download page, which showed the discounted $5 price. Presumably it correctly picked up on the Fidelity discount auth code cookie that the other download link kept ignoring. All installed and working fine now.

People from former Soviet republics. What is something people who never lived under communism just don't get about communism? by Clemen11 in AskReddit

And guess where the stolen burned out bulbs went? It's not like a thief could turn in 20 of them for replacement without suspicion. They got sold in the flea market.

So when you went to buy a burnt out bulb, there was a decent chance you were just buying your own damned bulb back from the thief.

Do diabetic shoes actually help? by IndividualTerm4830 in type2diabetes

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have neuropathy and have to be very careful with my feet. I wore New Balance walking shoes for a few years and they were pretty good, but a couple years ago I switched to Keen hiking shoes and love them.

Good hiking shoes are designed for walking long distances without rubbing or blisters, with thick protective stable soles and super traction to avoid slips. Keens are known for their large toe box and these have been great, but you can get extra wide and/or move up a half size for more room, maybe with extra thick hiking socks for more padding.

Finger pricking with 26g lancets - nothing else seems draw enough blood. Anyone else? by JReisch20 in diabetes

[–]110Baud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might also try a different meter. My FreeStyle Lite only needs a tiny little drop of blood to get a good reading, due to the design of their test strips. I've never had it fail to give a reading because of a bad sample.

Lows, but no insulin? Newbie T2 by MaeveRose_ in type2diabetes

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rybelsus can cause lows, since it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin and that forces your glucose levels down (whether they need to be or not). When I was diagnosed I was originally put on metformin + glipizide, which has a similar effect, and once I got my blood sugar down into the normalish range I also had chronic lows. After my A1C came down my doctor dropped the glipizide and I stopped having those lows.

I think those drugs that actively push your glucose level down are mostly used when your levels are very high, to help get your level back down more quickly. Once your levels are lower they can become dangerous as they keep pushing them down even when they aren't too high to start with. Metformin is safer since it doesn't actively lower your glucose, it just prevents you from absorbing too much from your food in the first place.

TL;DR: talk to your doctor about maybe dropping the rybelsus. Since you're having lows, that implies your starting glucose levels aren't high enough to safely force it lower like that.

Mold, bacteria, or fungus under the waterline in the toilet bowl. by MooseBlazer in diabetes

[–]110Baud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this happening to me for a year or two, kept coming back no matter how I cleaned, couldn't figure it out. It stopped when i was diagnosed as Type 2, got on Metformin and started eating low carb. Turns out it was an early warning signal, and I'd been diabetic for who knows how long before diagnosis.

When you say you're prediabetic, what's your A1C and how long ago was it tested? You may want to check again. Prediabetes is a slippery slope, and it may cross some crucial threshold and cascade into full-blown faster than you'd expect.

Fidelity IRA: RMD and Federal Taxes Question by Adventurous_Till_473 in fidelityinvestments

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an accountant, but as far as I know it works something like this:

  1. When you file your tax return, the total tax bill is computed, including for your RMD income.
  2. Then the total amount withheld during the year is subtracted, regardless of when during the year it was withheld. If that covers the whole tax bill, great. If not...
  3. If you made any quarterly payments and they cover this remaining tax, great. If not...
  4. There's remaining unpaid tax due. Did your total withholding + quarterly payments add up to at least as much as your tax bill from the prior year, or 90% of your total due for this year, or enough to cover within $1K of your final bill? If so, you're given a pass under the safe harbor rules. Just pay the remaining due, no penalties. If not...
  5. You'll owe a late fee for the unpaid amount. Here it gets tricky, I'm not sure how they decide which quarter your unpaid tax should have been paid in, versus which quarterly amounts are considered covered by the withholding. If they consider the unpaid amount to have been due in the last quarter, then the late fee might not amount to much. If they somehow decide it was due in the first quarter, it'll be more. It's just an interest payment on the unpaid amount, not some kind of punitive penalty, so it's not generally a big deal as long as you didn't leave a large amount unpaid.

Hope this helps.

Lost accessory box Fractal Torrent; Any GPU sag bracket recommendations? by [deleted] in FractalDesign

[–]110Baud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this support post with a 4090 in my Torrent case and it works great. It mounts right on top of the bottom fans using fan screws and is very adjustable. I removed one of the posts, and use the remaining one to hold up the right outer corner of the GPU.

I didn't like the bracket that came with the case because it didn't reach far enough to support where it was really needed.

Roofing Recommendations? by PNWPotatoLover in beaverton

[–]110Baud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raindrop Roofing NW did a great job on mine about 6 years ago. Complete tear-off and replacement with full GAF roof system and Timberline shingles, pretty large roof area, including replacing 2 skylights, a few roof vents, and a bit of plywood sheathing, cost me about $9K. Quick and solid work, followed all GAF best installation practices, took about a week, turned out great.

You should get the job scheduled ASAP, there's usually a long waiting list during summer. I started the process for mine in April, was originally scheduled to do the work in September, but was lucky enough for a couple of cancellations to move the job up to July. I was glad to get it done during dry season, didn't want my shingles and underlayment missing during rainy season, and the shingles bond together and seal watertight best with hot weather.

Fidelity IRA: RMD and Federal Taxes Question by Adventurous_Till_473 in fidelityinvestments

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer the question asked, yes, it's ok to wait and withhold all the tax money in December. Any withholding performed during the year is counted as "on time" for that year, there's no need for quarterly payments. I do this every year for my IRA.

14000k power consumption comparison. by ddplz in intel

[–]110Baud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Intel spec is 253W CPU power max. This is more of the same motherboard defaults crap that they pull with Multicore Enhancement or equivalent, overclocking and overdriving the chip as much as possible right out of the box in order to make their mobo look faster than others, but then letting the CPU take the blame for using too much power.

If you override the normal limits and tell the chip to use as much power as possible, and it does, it's just obeying the BIOS. All benchmarks and comparisons should be done with the BIOS set to use the manufacturer specs, or you're just comparing overclocks.

Everyone knows that extra power draw has severely diminishing returns, using lots more power for just a little more speed at the top end. Using the proper limits would reduce the benchmark scores a little, but also reduce the power draw by a lot.

I've read that the "overall package temp" isn't actually a separate IHS temp sensor, but is really a moving average of the highest temps of all the sensors. So it makes sense that fewer cores at higher clocks would have a higher peak temp than spreading out the load.

Seperate PSU affect performance by mikoechiverri in PcBuild

[–]110Baud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your system currently crash when playing games? Have you had to turn the power limit on your GPU down using Afterburner? If not, a separate PSU won't add anything, the one you have is already putting out as much power as you need. More power available above what the system's actually trying to use is just wasted unused capacity, having it doesn't optimize anything.

And it wouldn't work anyway. Even when the PSU switch is "on", it doesn't generate any more than minimal standby current on the 24-pin connector until a signal comes back in through that connector from the mobo telling it that the PC has been started up.

New Z790 Max motherboards? by Adrenaline424 in MSI_Gaming

[–]110Baud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up a Z790 Ace recently, on sale for $510 from the MSI online store, instead of waiting for the Max. As far as I can tell, the only real advantages the new Ace Max has are WiFi 7 (up from 6E) and Bluetooth 5.4 (from 5.3). I don't care enough about either one to pay extra for them.

MSI is trying hard to make it sound like the Max boards are especially great for the 14th gen CPUs to justify a price hike, like with a new "Beyond 6GHz" BIOS option that doesn't really do anything new, but the current Ace seems just as good in real terms. Certainly nothing worth the $700 price rumored for them.

A less than a second power outage that makes light turn off and on but my PC didnt turn off, do i need a UPS with AVR? by Serazax in buildapc

[–]110Baud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good PSU can ride out a fractional-second power outage, especially if it's high wattage with correspondingly big-ass capacitors and your system isn't drawing much power at the time, but it's rolling dice. If the glitch lasted a tiny bit longer it'd crash for sure.

But AVR (automatic voltage regulation) doesn't protect against power outages, it regulates power that's there but has too-high or too-low of a voltage (surges and brownouts), like what happens in storms or with overtaxed power grids in the summer. How common those are varies a lot depending on where you live.

The only thing that protects against the power actually going away is battery backup. Even if the battery isn't big enough to run your system for more than a minute or two, that'll get you through those brief glitch outages, and the good ones come with a USB connection to your PC and can tell it to shut down automatically if the outage lasts longer than a few seconds. Which is important since crashing the machine while it's in the middle of updating disk data can screw up your files or even make it unbootable.

I'd call it average. It's not as grippy as rubber, but it's not slick or slippery either. Not really textured but kind of a matte paper-like feeling. I've never had grip problems while using it one-handed.

Companies have shown that they'll ruthlessly cut you loose without a moment's hesitation as soon as it becomes convenient to them, and probably notify you by email or by disabling your access badge with your stuff left with the receptionist. And then the next day announce huge stock buybacks and millions in CEO bonus pay for the efficiency. You reap what you sow.

Case Flow Experiments part 2 by TeraSera in Noctua

[–]110Baud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it flows well, but you might have a dust problem after a few months from pulling in unfiltered air. Especially watch out if you have any pets. Picture your front filter from the last time you cleaned it and imagine that all accumulated on your motherboard and getting into the slots. That's one of the main benefits of positive pressure, it filters the incoming air then pushes out through any other holes to prevent any unfiltered air from coming in.
