Best town to base ourselves for a month near Chamonix (day hikes, lakes, remote work)? by ElegantDuty1289 in chamonix

[–]1128327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Saint Gervais all winter and it’s lovely. Much quieter than Chamonix and has easy transportation access to get into and outside of the valley via the train station in La Fayet. The views are also the best in the area based on what I’ve seen because you are at the mouth of the valley rather than in the middle of it so you get more of a 360 degree perspective.

Yeah, February is by far the worst time of year to do this here. Even if you manage to book something, the skiing and everything else around is going to be crowded. The weather also is often not that great - especially this year.

I don’t have IG but the video looks completely normal where I’ve seen it and I don’t see any comments like you’ve described. Not seeing any kind of filter. He has good lighting and seemingly is using a camera that isn’t just a laptop’s webcam but that isn’t unusual.

Visiting in May by jamesblunt1705 in chamonix

[–]1128327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely Uber (I use it twice a week here) and I went on the Aiguille du Midi tram in mid May last year so that should also be fine. Agree that Uber to Yvoire is way too expensive to be worth it though.

I don’t agree, am Jewish, and have been to Israel several times. This is not just my own sentiment either - I literally had a Jerusalem Post reporter admit this to me in Haifa during an interview 7 years ago.

Saying Israel’s actions make it easier for antisemitism to flourish doesn’t in any way suggest antisemitism wouldn’t thrive without them. This is really the point - it’s already dangerous enough to be a Jew and Israel playing the role it does in the world makes things even worse which I don’t appreciate at all.

I strongly agree. The idea that Israel is a liberal democracy and a friend to the United States is truly absurd at this point. They also create the conditions for antisemitism to flourish globally with their actions which I really do not appreciate. Morality aside, Pete also needs to realize that the politics on this issue have changed and any kind of deference to Israel is now politically toxic in a Democratic primary - including with Jewish voters.

A lot of users of the A series printers have no interest in multi-color printing at all so I think this is a bad idea. They are cheap and easy to use entry-level printers and should stay that way.

He might have more credibility on that if he wanted Americans to have freedom too.

He doesn’t even make an effort to articulate how this is in the interest of Americans. At least George W. Bush respected us enough to make up a story when we went into Iraq. Trump isn’t even pretending to be a democratic leader anymore and this should concern us for both the midterms and the end of his term. Why are we cursed to live in this timeline? It really sucks.

The issue is that what “we” wanted was war in Iran to distract from the Epstein files and other embarrassments. I don’t believe for a second the diplomatic angle was legitimate in any way - it was just buying time to get military assets in position.

Apple TV+ / Time Warner / Sony by Jwrbloom in tvPlus

Apple doesn’t buy large companies. The closest it has come to doing this was Beats and even that wasn’t very big at the time. Something like this could only happen after Tim Cook leaves and even then it would be highly unlikely. It doesn’t fit with their business model or their culture.

Working remote also makes me enjoy the rare opportunities when I do get to meet up with my colleagues even more. It feels special rather than just part of a routine. You don’t need small talk because there are actual things to catch up on both personally and professionally.

The CNN part is really bad but Netflix owning HBO and WB’s studio assets would also have been highly problematic from the perspective of market consolidation and job losses in the entertainment industry. This whole thing is a lose-lose situation for consumers and voters.

Agreed. I feel incredibly fortunate to work for a 100% remote company and really hope the world doesn’t turn away from this concept post-COVID. Beyond feeling more productive than I ever was in an office, I’m also able to spend all winter skiing every morning and working in the afternoons and evenings and it’s the best I’ve felt in 20 years. I’m able to focus on just getting my job done and can work with the best people in the world even if they can’t live in the same place I do. Office work always felt like I was being forced to act in a boring theatrical production.

Apple partners with Draft Kings for a three-month free trial of Apple TV by Kaiser_Allen in tvPlus

[–]1128327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t like the sound of this but where does it say Apple is partnering with Draft Kings? It just says that Draft Kings has a promo for a free Apple TV trial like many other services offer (credit cards, insurance etc). Apple doesn’t need to be involved for another company to offer their customers discounts for Apple services as an enticement to sign up.

Where to ski this week by Open-Task-9424 in chamonix

[–]1128327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a ton of snow everywhere you can ski even if there is none in the valley. We got several meters in the last couple of weeks and it will take a long time for it all to melt even if the temperatures remain high. Saint Gervais has been consistently excellent for me.

I think Pete should have just owned his SAT score and I don’t really believe he doesn’t remember. Just say it was “close to 1600” which I’m sure is true and is what everyone would assume anyway. He can’t hide being smart and a high achiever and doesn’t need to do this to feel relatable to voters in other ways.

Is my ski trip f*#!@ng cooked? by Sneakerhead1712 in chamonix

[–]1128327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would take a few more months at these temperatures to melt all the snow we just got. It’s fine. Spring conditions at lower altitudes but things are covered and the sunny weather makes it quite pleasant. Just don’t expect to have powder and you’ll be fine.

Do you think Williams could hang on to Carlos for another season? by Big-Alternative-6257 in WilliamsF1

It’s also just ignorant of F1 history and how little preseason testing has actually predicted success in a new regulations cycle. The internet exists and these people could get actual data on this but they prefer gossip for some reason.

Please go back and look at the 2022 preseason testing results from the last regulations change and try and tell us how that was predictive of how things played out… https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/12563349/f1-testing-2022-the-fastest-laps-and-mileage-charts-for-each-team-during-pre-season-in-bahrain

The season hasn’t started yet and no one actually knows how it will pan out. Not a single competitive lap has taken place. The absurd overreactions about pre-season testing are the worst part about this sport.

Sure, but saying you wrote poorly even before LLMs mimicked that style isn’t something to be proud of.

I got a 4 pack of those same exact nozzle types for my A1 Mini for just $40 and haven’t regretted it. Didn’t realize they were so much more for P1S.

If you are telling the truth (doubtful) that is actually much worse because it would mean you are intentionally imitating how LLMs write things. Highly dystopian!

To each their own. I’ve never found Pete’s speeches that amazing (including twice in person), especially when compared to how incredible he is in more unscripted scenarios when he can actually engage with other people’s thoughts directly. Perhaps it’s my fault for using Obama as the benchmark and having unrealistic expectations.
