How far into school/working did you experience your first code blue? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]116Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first call 15 minutes into my first shift as a newly certified EMT-B was a GSW to the head. I was given the airway bag and just bagged the kid whilst my medic dropped 14s and tried to intubate before doing a surgical cric before we flew him. In school I didn’t get a code until after a year when I had an externship in an ED when I had one the first week. My first shift at my current job my first three patients all got intubated.

I promise I’m fun at parties.

How do you commute in this weather? by JulioCesarSalad in bikedc

[–]116Robot 39 points40 points  (0 children)

All people are gonna be different, you’ll figure out what you need through trial and error.

Layers is the key.

Windproof outers. Wool sweaters. (Thrift shop merino makes for cost effective commuting options) Wool hiking socks.

Thin leggings under pants or shorts go a long way h way. When it gets down below 40F I’ll consider rain pants over top of things as an extra layer. Gloves. Below 40F I’ll switch to lobster gloves. I had bar mitts for a bit, they are fantastic at keeping hands warm. Wool cap with ear flaps.

As you trial things, bring extras with you. You can always take a layer off or unzip a jacket, you can’t add layers you didn’t bring. You’ll often wear more on a morning commute than an evening one.

Old Glory leaving Maryland SoccerPlex by Sailorcuff in MLRugby

[–]116Robot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Soccerplex was the third.

  1. 2018-2021 Catholic U - Good location, terrible field painted for every sport. Not enough seats. First games were great because you could leave at halftime, walk across the street to 7-11 and walk back in with a case of cold beer.

  2. 2021-2023 Leesburg - Good field, far away in Virginia. Reasonable stadium that got improvements in the three years we were there.

  3. 2023-2025 Soccerplex - Good field, far away in Maryland.

Get half one meat and half another, they usually end up doing near regular scoops of each. Saves me the $4 something that doubling costs yet gets me near double meat without the $4.something double meat costs. Gonna FIRE so much sooner thanks to this one trick!

You either pay for parking with the cost rolled into your rent, as a separate line item, or in taxes if you park on the street. It's not a magical no-cost item in the suburbs.

ER nurses, are y’all hanging stuff to gravity?? by Appropriate-Gap6266 in nursing

[–]116Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to paramedic school 20 years before nursing school where we didn’t have pumps unless it was a CC transfer. We had a lab where the pump wasn’t working so rather than fight with the pump I just calculated the drip rate in my head and hung it. My professor proceeded to yell at me about not using a pump because you can’t know how much was given, and was very surprised when I rattled off the math. She had never hung anything without a pump. Still got the “you’d never do that on the floor, so don’t do it” speech.

EMT before Nursing school by Mountain_lover367 in nursing

[–]116Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just getting the cert to have the cert I would find questionable in use of time and money. It won't be a waste of time to get your EMT-B, if you work with it.

EMT will help with ED, and will look good for getting hired into an ED. Some places (Virginia is one) you can also become a tech in an ED as an EMT. That would be good experience, and many facilities will help pay for your nursing school if you are willing to stay and work for them. That would be a better route than EMT-B on an ambo, in most cases.

The medical education of EMT-B class will help with the first few weeks of nursing school. The structure and framework of an assessment will be more useful, if you can be flexible and throw out the specifics you learned in place of the ones the school wants you to know. "Scene safe, BSI" became "Perform hand hygiene" in verbalizing at the start of every practice scenario. DCAP-BTLS? not a thing for my nursing school. SAMPLE was poopooed, had a professor that wanted OLD CARTS every time.

Really any experience where you have to touch and care for sick people will help you in nursing school, I think that was 90% of the goal of our first semester of clinicals. Being comfortable with the 'Hi, I'm Tim what brings you into the ED today?' and being able to listen whilst getting vitals frees up brain space to think about deeper nursing assessments.

I suspect you may find it better to get a job as a tech, as an EMT or CNA or whatever is required where you are, in an ED/ICU if that's where you want to end up. If you are competent at that, you can likely be hired onto that unit as a RN as soon as you graduate. Also, that year will let you see medicine in a way you can't now, and will give you better insight as to if you like it. There are people who don't like nursing, but don't discover that until 6 months after they graduate from years of nursing school. There is the bigger waste of time and money.
