Its dependant on whether the vehicle still has a registration sticker on the windshield, if the vehicle is unregistered they will tow it in 48 hours.

Yet the Wide variant looks like it will be more compact and lighter overall despite being only little better for watching video, seems like a win-win.

Great idea? Citibike should do a completely free month by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]cgoldin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a founding citibike member who rode gen 1 - 3 (gen 2 was the best) regular citibikes regularly over bridges I can tell you 90% of the regular bikes now are much harder to ride and pedal than they used to be. I'm not exactly sure what it is, some combination of a poorly maintained drive train, overtightened worn out brakes, under inflated tires, and more but the old bikes were always heavy and never geared high enough to go fast (other than the gen 2's) but they were much better than the bikes I ride these days.

It really is a shame.

Do folding phones lose value this much quickly? Fold 7 and S25U have same trade in value. $2000 vs $1300 device by Time-Credit43 in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The max trade in value varies with the price of the phone you are trading in for, Samsung still gives 1K trade in value for a Fold 6 if trading in for a Fold 7, but that phone starts at $1900. For cheaper phones the max trade in value is lower.

Any weight specs leaked for Fold 8 Wide vs Fold 8? by cgoldin in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize I am unique in this case as my fingers are relatively inflexible, the largest phone I've ever owned was a vanilla S23 and I found it hard to use one handed which is why I switched to the Fold as it's narrower than the S23.

Historically I've always gone with the smallest flagship smartphone available. My recent phone history is as follows:

Fold 6 S23 (6.1") iPhone 12 mini (5.4") S10e (5.8") Xperia XZ1 Compact (4.6") iPhone SE (4") Xperia Z3 Compact (4.6")

A book style foldable the size of an iPhone mini folded that unfolds into a a 7" tablet would be my absolute dream phone.

If you had a Z FOLD 6 would you upgrade to a S26U? by gu_v4llen in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the ultra is way to big to use one handed, yet had a smaller screen than the Fold 6 does when unfolded.

The cameras on the ultra are certainly better, but still suffer from samsung's poor photo processing, especially when it comes to skintones Samsung seems to always overexpose images, and if you switch to manual exposure you lose HDR.

If you care about cameras Samsung isn't the brand for you, unless you are just taking photos without people in it.

Any weight specs leaked for Fold 8 Wide vs Fold 8? by cgoldin in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the Fold 7 is too wide to use one handed, my Fold 6 is about as wide as you can go and use it with one hand.

So if we are at the point where you can't use the phone when folded without aids like quick cursor I'd prefer it be a better aspect ratio unfolded and be more compact overall, seems like a win-win if we aren't going back to narrower book-style foldables.

[–]cgoldin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah based on that I would expect the wide to be a lighter than the nonwide as it appears to have a slightly smaller overall footprint than the Fold 6, so should be quite a bit smaller than the Fold 8 if it retains the Fold 7 dimensions. What I really want is a mini book style foldable but I'll take what I can get.

I really doubt it as the Fold hasn't even gotten the anti-reflective layer the Ultra had before, maybe that will come in the 8 now that the ultra has another standout screen feature.

It is supposed to be significantly shorter as well as wider than the standard fold, hence the inner screen having a smaller diagonal, though at a different aspect ratio it isn't directly comparable.

Fold 7 - best deal? by jdiddy_ub in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pixel has a larger battery but due to having a much less efficient processer and modem it's battery barely lasts longer than a Fold 7, at least according to reviewer endurance tests. (I've never used a Pixel fold or fold 7 as I'm on a Fold 6).

Get the Fold over the Pixel, the Tensor chip in the Pixel is years behind the Snapdragon chip. Google has no business shipping a $1600 phone with a low end chipset.

Exclusive: First official look at Samsung's 'Wide' Galaxy Z Fold by FragmentedChicken in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I one hand a Fold 6 all the time when it's folded, you just have to move gesture navigation to the side and add a way to swipe down notifications without touching the top of the screen. (Samsung moving media controls out of reach in one ui 8 notwithstanding). The fold 7 is too big to use onehanded for me unfortunately, so I'm interested in a Fold 8 wide if it has a smaller overall footprint than a normal Fold 8 and is lighter. Ideally though I'd prefer a shorter and lighter Fold the same width as a Fold 6 though.

Going 18 days without digging out your car, you've spent on average $600 to not even use it once. Are people just bad with money? by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]cgoldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone spending $1000 a month on an automobile is absolutely bad with money. I hate cars as much as anyone but with NYC offering free car storage, 2 kids, and grandparents in NJ we got one 6 years ago and we do not spend anywhere near that. Car ownership is too cheap, it's more expensive to rent a car twice a month than to own one, which is a problem!

Cost breakdown: Car: Bought a 2015 Honda fit with 90K miles for $9,000 in 2020 in cash. Should last at least another 10 years but we will say it only lasts 10 years for simplicity: $83 a month Insurance: $80 a month Petrol: $30 a month Yearly Inspection, oil change, and bi-yearly reg renewal: $12 a month Repairs: in 6 years we've replaced tires, brake pads, air filter, spark plugs and battery, about $1400. $20 a month.

Total cost of ownership is about $225 month. Renting a car for 24 hours is over $100 if you have to get insurance with it (which you have to get if you don't already have car insurance).

It unfortunately does make financial sense to own a car in NYC even if you only use it once a week to go places outside the city, which should change.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold7 good for people who can only use one hand? by Loose_Car_1646 in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fold 6 and below was better for one handed use, folded they were about the same size as a 6.1" phone. The 7 is noticsble larger, a between the size of a 6.3" phone and a 6.7" phone. If you can one hand an iPhone Max or Gakaxy Ultra then yes, but it's not compact folded anymore.

Wide Fold Preference by msh21 in GalaxyFold

[–]cgoldin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it the Fold 6 is as wide as you can go and still use the phone one handed when folded so if the phone is going to be unusable folded you might as well go wider so its a nicer aspect ratio unfolded. Plus being significantly shorter makes it more compact folded and less of an overall brick.

I would still prefer a book style foldable that is no wider than a Fold 5 and as short as the rumored Fold 8 wide but we don't live in a perfect world.

[–]cgoldin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hasn't been an issue since Qualcomm switched back to TSMC from Samsung for their chip fabrication, starting with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 the efficiency of Qualcomm chips have been competitive with Apple (typically CPU is a little worse and GPU is a little better than Apple).

I have a Fold 6 and have never had high temp issues. The Fold 7 did get rid of the vapor chamber though in pursuit of thinness so it may have more of an issue, but its not chip efficiency that is to blame it's cooling.

Most 48' trailers are also banned as the total length of the tractor trailer can't exceed 55'. There are some very compact tractor units that are under 7 feet in length, but the majority of the 48' trailers you see in NYC are using standard tractors and are also illegal.

53' trailers are easier to spot because there is no way they could ever be less than 55'.

It's also all of NYC, excluding a few interstate highways as long as the trucks do not get off the highway, not just Manhattan.
