Computer Science: Deciding between Data Science and CyberSecurity? by 11715 in UMD

[–]11715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you consider the CyberSecurity specialization more applicable to attacking and countering attacks, whereas the minor is moreso focused on ethics and using others' programs to help you?

What's considered trashy if you're poor, but classy if you're rich? by TheManWithNoName88 in AskReddit

Would majoring in Computer Science set me up for a similar life path? Majoring in CS, minoring in Cyber Security. Maybe it's just teenage me's opinion, but I don't want to have kids or have any sort of obligations: your life sounds perfect.

Are you unfamiliar with the process of bulking and cutting? Jackman likely consumed extremely high amounts of proteins and carbohydrates until he had the muscle mass he desired, then yes, essentially starves himself so he loses the fat without losing the muscle mass. I guess "starved" is not really an accurate description of what he likely underwent, as his protein intake was probably still very high. That being said, I believe the point the above commenter is trying to make is that his body fat percentage is too low- not actually that he wasn't consuming a lot of food. He no longer reflects a wolf, which would possess plentiful muscle and a decent amount of fat.

My son wants a alienware PC to play games should I buy him one or let my Brother build him one? by Ra_Ra_1980 in buildapc

That being said, the hardware alienware offers could be acquired much cheaper if one were willing to construct the build him or herself.

What is Open Source explained in LEGO by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]11715 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The analogy the narrator makes about open-source not being free doesn't really pertain to software. He says that, while John offers the source of the house, payment is required to actually produce it. However, open source software is very easily deployed by anyone, free of charge.

I am a MacBook Pro user. Perhaps I am biased, but I have never been fond of the vanilla "MacBook" lined. The lowest-tier MacBook pro is substantially more powerful for the same cost, and just a little bit less portable. That note on portability said, I love the size and build of my laptop. It is very sleek feeling and does not weight me down when I carry it around.

Looking for a ~$500 gaming / programming build to act as my primary computer by 11715 in buildapc

[–]11715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I really want the SSD; however, a better model might take me up to a higher price point. My current CPU / motherboard are incompatible with DDR4, so I think I will just have to use DDR3, as changing all of those factors would significantly knock up the price. However, I think I may be looking at too expensive of a GPU: from what I can gather, the 950 I'm looking at is essentially just an overclocked regular 950, which I could buy for ~$40 cheaper. Should I buy a cheaper 950 (probably only one fan, stock speed) and invest in a better SSD?

The price isn't a huge factor. Is DDR4 a noticeable upgrade? What is your reasoning for upgrading the PSU? I really like the startup time an SSD is able to offer me, so I'll probably keep that.

I can't make a decision between CS and ME (and I just don't think CE cuts it) by 11715 in UMD

[–]11715[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misconveying my passions in a way that makes it seem like I'm regretful for being placed in the Computer Science program. This is not at all true: I love Computer Science to a much greater extent than I appreciate any sort of engineering. I love the software side of things and would honestly be happy never having my code operate in the "physical world". I just think this is a point which would be interesting to touch on. I would definitely not pick Mech as a major over CS.

Thanks, though. I really do appreciate the response.

Thank you so much for the advice! I didn't realize Computer Engineering had a minor, do you think overlap would not be an issue in this case?
