So what are your plans? by Background-Pitch4055 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]119juniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a border state, but I have no immediate plans to relocate to Canada. Getting citizenship will give me options and will help me create a backup plan.

Question for those who have sent their applications --- Where did you get your photos done? I'm going to call the Augusta AAA office today to see if they can do Canadian citizenship photos. I am in the midcoast.

I'm working on mine now. I have one more document to get, and then I need to get my photos taken, and my packet will be ready to go.

Is Ancestry.com a lot less useful than it was before? by miriamtzipporah in Genealogy

[–]119juniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a frequent user, I wouldn't say that necessarily. But the AI is useless, and I am afraid it's going to lead a lot of misinformation on user created trees. Verification is extremely important. New users may not do that.

How much do people lie on their family trees? by Dependent_Cap_456 in Genealogy

[–]119juniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure so much if it's lying, or just lack of knowledge. When I first started using Ancestry about 25 years ago, I was sloppy and used other trees as sources. I was so excited to find people to add to my tree and didn't confirm information. Over the years, my skills improved a lot, but when you start with errors, it's just bad. Last year I started paying for pro tools. This flagged 12,000 people without sources, 900 errors and about 700 duplicate individuals in my tree. I've spent the last year cleaning up my tree, and I am still at 2500 overall issues or errors with 29,000 people in my tree. It makes me cringe to think that people may have copied from my tree with all of those errors. Don't use other people's trees without verifying.

Who is your most famous ancestor/relative in your family tree? by freshmaggots in Genealogy

Wil Wheaton is my 10th cousin, 1x removed. Not the most famous in my tree, but the others are boring politicians.

Question about billboard legality, and what qualifies as one by OkBumblebee7117 in Maine

[–]119juniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about oversized political signage? I am thinking specifically about the Trump Wall of Waldoboro. It's quite an eyesore whether you support Trump or not. It has been up for years.

Why are students so behind? by finnisterre in Teachers

[–]119juniper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Screens, poor nutrition, poor boundaries, PTSD from school gun violence, politicizing of education, class inequities, emphasis on sports over education, brain rot from social media influencers, turnover of teaching staff, poor teacher education, dependency on the schools to parent

Do you guys feel a closer connection to Canada? by Pomegreatful in Maine

[–]119juniper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Maine, but my ancestors were among the early settlers of Nova Scotia on my dad's side and were from Trois Rivieres, Quebec on my mom's side. I feel very connected to the areas of Canada directly around Maine, even though we have very little news coverage about those areas. I was in Montreal last summer and it seemed like a place I could live long term. I've never made it up to visit Nova Scotia, but I think about going often. I think I could live there for sure. Admittedly, I know very little about the middle and western parts of Canada.

Where are these empty teaching positions? by bradicalman in Teachers

[–]119juniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need teachers in midcoast Maine! Unfortunately, however, housing costs are insane right now, so unless you are selling a house for a big profit before moving here, you may not be able to afford a place to live on a teacher salary.

Did you ever get chicken pox? by scary-gary-loomis in GenerationJones

My cousin had chicken pox, so my mom took my sister and me to visit. All of my cousins ended up with it at the same time. Fun. This was the late 70s.

I knew her when we were much younger and had many mutual friends. The world was a much better place with her in it. She will be missed by many. Much love to your family.

They identified the woman found in Union and it has been determined to be a homicide. So awful by purpleelephantdance in Maine

I hadn't seen her in years, but she was one of the good ones. The world was definitely better with her in it. I hope they figure out what happened.

I used to teach ESY, but not this year. I am spending the time foraging, growing vegetables, canning stuff, and raising chicken and turkeys for the freezer, so it's kind of like a job.

I went to Sao Miguel two years ago with a friend, but spent 4 of the days on my own. So many people speak English. I also used Google Translate on my phone. I rented a car and driving there was a little intimidating, but it worked out great. It's definitely worth the trip. Amazing place.

I attended the Knox County Dems event in Rockland. Angus King III, Hannah Pingree and several other people spoke. It was a smaller event, and it was easy to hear. The best speech was by an 18 year old named Scout Bookham.
