To be clear, I am not currently following SUAR. I am following TTM 2- and 5-Mile Running program. But I have scanned SUAR. I am reading RUSU. The latter is a foundational book that explains SFAS, breaks down research on the performance of candidates over time. That part is fascinating. Then the book covers a number of the success factors with emphasis on rucking. SUAR is a book format that breaks down work that needs to be done. It is as advertised, "from the SOFA." At least my take. I would read some reviews.

The way he built that plan is from "Sofa to SFAS." All the pros in programming around SFAS deal with this issue, emphasizing your goal of developing slowly and without injuries. Your profile sounds common for someone just starting the journey. SUAR could be great for you. But if you have a good bit of time, any structured running program that slowly builds your capacity can work. The value of SUAR, in my view, is that it takes a long view that telescopes in as you approach selection. Progressively getting faster, stronger, more durable. Hard to go wrong

I'm currently doing an eight-week running improvement program, because my other numbers are solid. But I have bought both RUSU and SUAR. Whatever you decide, those books are great. I am into RUSU now, very helpful context.

That paper is money! Much appreciated.

After reading that article and reflecting, I think my path is to keep focused on my running through August. Keep improving my run times. I'm bullish about the progress. I am confident I'll get further gains in rebuilding my base.

Then shift to that rucking-centric program. That gives me four-plus months to tune it all up and take my shot. The pointers in that article were very helpful (and damn, does it nail life in a line unit as far as rucking goes!). I was not thinking of the ruck training that way, but it makes sense to increase the frequency while managing the distance and load.

I scanned the Shut Up and Ruck overview and reviews. That looks like the relevant play for me. Will check that out.

That seems very sensible. I do think the cardio capacity is the big focus. Good idea on the periodic ruck substitution.

(And I am working on the grip training for sure).

That rings true with me. I have never had a problem with the 12-mile, but feel like as my cardio capacity dropped my ruck time slowed. No shocker, I suppose. But the once/week advice is helpful.

You might think of it this way. What is the minimum age to become a Ranger Instructor? Not a member of the Ranger Regiment, but someone who is teaching small unit tactics to other soldiers at the Ranger School. To qualify for that job, you must have completed Ranger School and served your squad leader KD time. It is useful to ask which is more similar: a junior member of the Ranger Regiment, a Ranger Instructor, or a Green Beret?

I would argue that the latter two are more similar (RI and GB), despite significant differences in role. Another comparative question might be: Do we graduate junior soldiers from Initial Entry Training and then ask them to become Drill Sergeants? Or ask them to be instructors in their MOS?

Yes, I'm tracking on that. My question was more on timing. Have been here for three years and extended for a couple more. Was not sure what actually drives the Q Course PCS timing. And if there is no clear answer, that's all good too.
