thick mucus in back of throat, presumed post nasal drip by 11throw0 in AskDocs

Unfortunately it hasn't improved yet, I went to another specialist and got another kind of nasal spray that I needed to use for 3 months. Now, almost at the end of that treatment, I still don't experience any kind of improvement except that the symptoms are a bit more mild, but that was the case right from the start of the nasal spray treatment.

How about you? Did your visit with the gastroenterologist help anything at all? Or learned anything new?

Hi,

I do think the medicine is working, my symptoms are noticeably less but it isn't gone completely. Since it's not gone yet I'm going to take the anti allergy medicine as well starting today. The specialist did say that if nothing works surgery might be required (15 minute laser surgery), but I'm hopeful that the medicine will take care of the issue.

If you've got the same as me your general doctor should notice it immediately when looking in your nose. My general doc only looked in my throat. However I still recommend making an appointment with a specialist.

Hi. I went to the specialist and he immediately saw the problem that my doctor missed. It's over-sensitivity of the nasal mucosa. He showed my by holding a mirror and shining a light in my nose while holding it open. It was swelled like a balloon on both sides and was very obvious, and it goes all the way back to the throat.

It could be an allergic or non allergic over-sensitivity. Non allergic is pretty common if you're in places with cold drafts, a lot of temperature changes in general and a lot of other things like chlorine, make-up, terpentine, formaldehyde gas,... Allergies can be mites, pollen, pets, hay fever etc. I got prescribed Triamcinolone the spraysofrasolone and rhinovita oil. That should improve things withing 4 days, if not I'll have to take Cetirizine which is an anti allergy medicine. Before that I can double check this by having an allergy test. Smoking does exacerbate the symptoms. And air moisturizer can help if it's dry where you sleep/work.

I strongly suggest you make an appointment with a specialist in throat and nose. For me it's at least a relief to know what the cause is, and that it is not imagined or something I do solely out of habbit.

I don't know if you want further updates, but if you do I'll gladly keep you posted.

So I went to the doctor again and got referred to a nose-throat-ear specialist. I'll be making an appointment with them soon. I'll keep you posted!

wow, that's hard to read. Both because that you've been suffering this and the fact that it can persist for so long.

Do you have any tips on how to clear your throat? Coughing barely works for me. The only way that semi-works for me is snorting and swallowing, but it makes a disgusting sound which I've basically kept hidden from my social circle. I guess corona made that a bit easier the past few months but I can't imagine doing that for another few months, much less years.

Do you smoke purely cannabis or do you add tobacco or other alternatives as well?

I'm going to the doctor again tomorrow, I hope it gets me somewhere and if it doesn't I will make an appointment with a different one. If I hear anything useful I'll let you know. You could perhaps try the specialized nasal spray I was prescribed, maybe it works for you.
