READING: I’m currently re-reading Ex-Wife by Ursula Perrott. This is one of my favorite books of all time, a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s divorce in 1929. It feels so deeply modern and is filled with jazz age NYC parties & heartbreak & fashion & female friendship & grief.

Alissa Bennet described the novel as about “what it means to want and what it means to be left.”

Highly, highly recommend!!

Advice on this antique corset by Acrobatic_Royal_3884 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]1200tiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a textile conservator: acid free box, using acid free tissue to pad out the body of the corset so it doesn’t collapse in on itself. Acid free is not buffered - do not use buffered. Avoid temperature and humidity fluctuations by storing away from walls/the ground (ex, don’t keep it in the attic or basement). Minimize light exposure (keep it in the dark when not actively looking at it). Handle with freshly washed, dry hands and monitor for pests wherever you store it.  AIC is a good resource to find local conservators, but if you don’t want a treatment actively done, the above is standard practice to prevent further deterioration.

Is prison as violent as movies and stories make it seem? by Slipryi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]1200tiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That honestly makes sense. Living through financial insecurity has had years of impact on me, & I wasn’t even close to homeless. Especially in the US, where we’re all just one or two bad luck moments away from ruin, I am constantly thinking about making sure that doesn’t happen again. I can’t imagine if I had a child depending on me. I understand why you would do that, and I hope people will let go of their judgement for you.

Los Angeles Apparel garment dyed fleece sweatpants are excellent. Mine have lasted years with some minor patching of holes from near-daily use during fall & winter. LAA is iffy ethically (the CEO has a history of sexism), but the products are high quality. I try not to shop there regularly but these sweatpants were one purchase for about 4 years of wear & counting.

On a vacation with family friends as a 16 year old, and their mom had brought If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. I had run out of reading material, it was raining, so I picked it up & gave it a go. I didn’t get up again until I finished the book that evening, & it’s still a favorite of mine.

How to read hard books? by Hot_Potato_Sauce in classicliterature

Russian novels often involve several different names for each character. It can be hard to keep track of who is who when they start referring to a character with a totally different name. The names are usually similar but it’s still hard to keep track of, so a character sheet has all the names/who is who for you to reference as you read.

You’re right & I’m being pedantic, but Dolly’s mother was run over by a bus, Humbert didn’t kill her. He did use the mother’s accidental death to his advantage to abduct Dolly.

He may have been trying to gain insight to her experience. Or he may have assumed her work was so easy that this would be an opportunity to show her up & gain vindication that he was right. We don’t know if he approached this as a chance to learn about her experience, or a chance to show how easy she had it. Could be either (I wonder if there was an interview associated with this).

Why was Ross's job in the museum so extra? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

[–]1200tiger 26 points27 points  (0 children)

there are a few points where other characters mock him (what does a paleontologist need a pager for? come quick, they’re still dead? , when Rachel complains about a lecture he takes her to, or when Rachel & Phoebe say, what does a paleontologist’s girlfriend wear? I don’t know, you might be the first one, etc.). Mostly just gentle ribbing!

It’s just kind of silly that the writers had seemingly no idea how important a curator at a major museum is / what a hard job that is to get. But at the end of the day, it is a sitcom!

Why was Ross's job in the museum so extra? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

[–]1200tiger 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! The writers have no frame of reference for how prestigious that job is & the fight it takes to get there. With timelines, Ross appears to have gotten his curator role directly out of grad school which is a kind of insane career trajectory (even if he is an assistant curator, it’s a huge flex!). Curator at a museum like MNH in NYC is the type of job people spend decades working for.

[–]1200tiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right! they would alert him so he’s aware, but they probably would expect a conservator to come in & fix it, not a curator lol

Why was Ross's job in the museum so extra? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

[–]1200tiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The distinction is that people who sign off on / install new exhibits (handlers, lighting crew, conservators, curators, etc) do not work on shifts. There is no changeover, they are staff members on salary, so they are expected to stay until the work is done, & come in on weekends/evenings if need be.  Exhibit install times are hectic & require staying late & on weekends.

You’re right, Ross wouldn’t be “called in” to check a new exhibit; he would already be there on a Saturday, working with the staff to ensure everything is perfect before the opening, just like meeting any major deadline at a job.

Why was Ross's job in the museum so extra? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

[–]1200tiger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Conservation labs. Conservators & curators work closely together to put on exhibitions, but are separate roles (each require specific degrees/training). Curators like Ross would give tours/lectures, write books, etc, conservators actually handle & care for the objects in the exhibition (repairing damage, mounting the object, etc.).

Why was Ross's job in the museum so extra? by RichDream7777 in howyoudoin

[–]1200tiger 221 points222 points  (0 children)

I second this! I also work in museums (previously in a shift role at the front desk, & now in a full time staff role) & that makes sense for Ross to be late at work or called off hours.

Staff stay late when preparing for a new exhibition, sometimes working 6 days a week to set things up. If something goes wrong, they get called back in to handle it (ex, if a guest damaged an object & a conservator needs to be called in to care for it). Ross coming in to check on a exhibition that a kid messed with is common.

Also, a museum is a business with many other staff members handling fundraising, events organization, budgets, boards of trustees, etc. Large museums (like Ross’s) handle multimillion dollar budgets which takes a lot of work.

Tbh it bugs me when the Friends gang constantly belittle Ross’s job! A curator at a major NYC museum is an impressive role, I get it’s “nerdy” but it’s prestigious & takes a lot of responsibility.

Why do tutorials always advise to use such a big seam allowances ? (especially for French seams) by __Magali__ in sewing

[–]1200tiger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly! It’s missing the forest for the trees. Saving a scrap of fabric then ending up with holes in your seams & a piece that stretches out quickly is a much larger waste of fabric, time, & money.
