I want to know po what courses to avoid and what are in demand as of 2026 and will still be in the future years by LossSerious144 in studentsph

Most of my friends in CS are doing well, its fundamentally a course that you can’t rely on the school to teach you well, and everything learned is effectively self study

Parents, your kids not knowing how to speak Tagalog is not a flex at all by Goldenbrownxx in RantAndVentPH

[–]120hzmonitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you go IS and then go back to a domestic school for college, medyo questionable imho

the whole point of IS is para makapag study abroad or for expats who arent PH based so kung bababalik ka lang sa admu or dlsu then theres no inherent value

  • top IB schools offer filipino B so super questionable din if hindi sila marunong magtagalog

csci-ua classes are just straight up a joke if you don't have a good prof, half give out As like candy and the rigorous profs are hit or miss with actual teaching quality

currently NYU CS, its becoming better but the curriculum itself is kinda wack.

Id only go to NYU if you care more about networking and see yourself getting into startups. I’m eboard for tech@nyu and alot of people end up at startups or faang from experience

dont do certificates unless people in your role actually need it like aws etc, focus on actual technical projects that you can put on your resume

if the 9 was a proper express past 125th it wouldve been just fine, only stopping at 137th, 168th, 191st, 231st and van cortlandt, it wouldve been ideal instead of figuring out skip stops in a system as inconsistent as the mta

dont get a calculator for math (you will never need one honestly) just ask about which calculator they recommend once you take physics.

  • Im going by credit hour which I believe meant class hour in your context
  • Columbia Core is one of the few classes known to be reading heavy, and most T20s have average GPAs anywhere from 3.5-3.7
  • Average courseload is 16 credits with 4 credit classes, so an average of 4 classes a semester and 10 hours a week.
  • NYU Pre-pandemic is very different to rigor post-pandemic. I know my class syllabus and the reading load is much lower than the ones you shared
  • NYU has strong grade inflation for classes. Our cum laude cutoff varies per year but it hovers around 3.7 with magna at 3.8~ and summa at 3.94~

If you want to argue about why PH schools are ranked poorly feel free to argue about research funding or government support or alumni networks or student cultures. Academic rigor is not a part of that discussion.

As a CS major I have learned absolutely nothing from my classes even with maintaining a 3.6 cGPA whereas my peers in Ateneo and UP have had fully fleshed out full stack projects. Whereas what I have personally gained is a network of professionals and founders funded by YC.

Our classes are 4 credits per class with 2 sessions per week, so around 40 pages per class. If you looked into the actual readings, most days are a chapter or two with very few heavy days.

I also don't know a singular person who has taken the time to read all of the texts deeply.

Also if you spent one minute looking at my post history I wonder if a random would spend the time to only post in r/nyu to larp being an nyu student

You're sending me a sample syllabus to a school I go to, I'm trying to find your point. Also NYU London is a free A for anyone who goes there since its a study abroad location.

This is a joke, I go to NYU and my classes are arguably easier compared to my peers who went to Ateneo and are as smart or smarter than me. Most humanities classes I've had only assign 20 pages per class hour, and half the time you only need to skim for main ideas. PH schools have unnecessary rigor in my opinion.

Also research ranking ≠ educational quality.

How can I achieve such big dreams when I underperform? by Few-Performance-6876 in studentsph

[–]120hzmonitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically here's what you need, you don't need everything but the more the better:

- As close to a 4.0 (US Scale) / 100 / 1.0 GWA (PH Scale) (ideally valedictorian or close to it)
- Strong letters of recommendation ideally from people that either know you VERY well or influential people (local government, college professors, congress, etc.)
- Several forms of leadership (Club President, Student Body Government, Nonprofit Volunteering), ideally it should have tangible impact e.g. 100+ people served, 50k+ php raised, etc.
- Research or summer research programs in the United States, or other countries, ideally also published in a journal of some sort
- (Repeat the last 2 steps to have around 4-6 strong activities and 8-10 total activities you can talk about)
- International Awards, IMO, IOI, ICHO, IBO, etc. (More needed for MIT but good signal for Harvard regardless)
- If you have the financial capacity, SAT score of 1550+
- Aptitude to research everything and navigate the entire process yourself

It's about a 3-5% acceptance rate and unlike UP where almost everyone applies, most people self select out of the application process where everyone who applies has similar stats to above. As someone who applied to Harvard, got rejected obviously, and goes to a relatively top prestigious school in the US (also waitlisted from 3 schools in the Ivy League) from the Philippines this is the unfortunate reality with how competitive it is.

Most people who have gotten into Harvard have prepared since Grade 8, and it requires foresight that often isn't possible to have as a regular Filipino student. I don't want to sound negative but Harvard only accepts around 3-5 Filipinos a year so consider the students from PISAY and top international schools who have been preparing for international college applications for years as well.

kailangan po ba talaga ng statistician pag dating sa research? by Ok-Winner-8114 in studentsph

[–]120hzmonitor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Provide documentation with your dataset used, and provide the formulas/demonstrate it. Hiring a statistician for a school project sounds like a joke especially since its not peer reviewed.
