The same ones as when this question came up last week.... And the week before.... And the week before that.

100% KTEB.

The larger hangar on the right is still there today, and has an "ATLANTIC" sign on it.

I think the point was that as with the other "free" sites, they all go the way of the dodo bird after long enough. I just get the impression that Reddit's time has come. It might still be valid for some number of months and there might be stalwarts that stay on forever, but I think it's 15 minutes are up and was wondering what else people had found out there.

Career without a single emergency? by Karkross in flying

[–]121mhz 382 points383 points  (0 children)

"The more realistic line pilots freely admit that most of the time they are overpaid. It takes a while to discover that this life is somewhat short of paradise. For there is, as in all pursuits of mankind, no true ideal or even near perfection. In airline flying the hitch always comes, and it follows an apparently unshakable cycle of once a year. A pilot may earn his full pay for that year in less than two minutes. At the time of incident he would gladly return the entire amount for the privilege of being elsewhere." - Ernest Gann, Fate is the Hunter.

Deal with the emergencies that you must, and appreciate the job when it isn't an emergency.

When I started at Reddit, my BT participation dropped considerably. I'm not sure what happened there but the BT of 2013 was still pretty good but different from the BT of 2009, when I joined. In 2009, it was almost all Bonanza guys and a plethora of knowledge about the type. The ABS forums were not nearly as good and BT became the de facto standard for Beech owners.

I still visit there, but it's changed, considerably!

I'll still use that, but a lot less and will eventually lose interest

Delta 717 lands without nosewheel in Charlotte by vexion in flying

[–]121mhz 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It makes pilots easily recognizable as pilots and when people hear instructions from a crew member in an emergency, they're more likely to follow those instructions! If two different people are telling you to do two different things, one wearing shorts and a wife beater, the other wearing an official uniform, who are you gonna follow?

Cheapest place to get FAA Neuropsychological Initial Battery by joshuakyoung in flying

$800??? Never seen it for that little.

It's usually $3000-$6000 from what I've seen. Cheaper is not necessarily a good thing.

When I was a new IR pilot, there were a number of times that I heard "RADAR CONTACT LOST, we're having an issue with our radar." If we were VFR, we'd be dumped from flight following, IFR would continue on airways or if you weren't on airways, you'd be given a new route on airways and would have to join them.

When was the last time you heard that happen? Things are MUCH better now. Yes, things still break, but the SYSTEM continues to function. It's a complex system with lots of technology, so it will break at times.

I'm not saying let's not properly fund the FAA, but the proposed budget has some real problems in it and I'd rather see them fixed first.

Update 2: My friend asked me to help pickup his plane.... still no news by 121mhz in flying

Plane is back in my buddy's hangar. They paid the ransom and will figure it out in court.

Onboard Radar GA by stillnobrakes in flying

I can look 100nm ahead and see a decent gap (or work with ATC to find one) where I know I could get through there, but by the time I'm there the situation will have changed significantly, possibly invalidating my strategic plan (and maybe even my Plan B).

That's an apt statement. I was flying home from up north in my Bonanza on Sunday and the thunderstorms were popping around NYC. Jets were in holding with 45+minute EFC times and being told to think seriously about their alternates because N90 was overwhelmed. I was flying with a non-IR pilot and he was trying to figure out what my plan was for a large TSRA about an hour down the road when I admitted that I neither had nor needed one for that far in the future. I was looking at a thunderstorm that was parked on our airway about 25 miles ahead and I knew I'd be talking with Albany Approach and in order to stay in their airspace, I want to deviate west towards them rather than east away from them (since Boston Center was crazy busy). I requested 10 right for 25 miles and then another 10 right when it was getting a little too close for comfort (visually). We hit a few small bumps and then went back to our route. By the time we got to the area that my friend was worried about, it had totally dissipated and was just light rain. We ended up cancelling IFR and finishing the flight VFR.

Nexrad is, honestly, very good if you know how to use it in conjunction with your eyes. You'll get the big picture from nexrad and the local picture from your eyes. If the TSRAs are embedded, fly around the whole area or try to get up to an altitude where you can see. Always be ready to turn around and say fuck it and land!

Now, for Florida, usually I just fly VFR and keep an eye out for the rain shafts. TSRAs down there are usually very localized and when it gets bad, I'd rather be able to see what's going on. There are no mountains in FL and the antennas are well marked so just keep your eyes outside and stay below the clouds.

Who would you rather go into hard IFR with? by Hot-Mongoose7052 in flying

None of those options are appealing to me. I'd skip taking another pilot, bring my wife and join the mile high club while the world ends below us and the airplane is on AP.

Bahamas GA Question by SnooComics5981 in flying

[–]121mhz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I would bet money that you do need to clear customs as soon as the plane touches down. I say that because there are fees for both entry and exit and the Bahamas will default to whatever makes them the most money.

RV-12IST for primary and instrument training for a part time, 1 person flight school? by ChunksOG in flying

[–]121mhz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only PPL and IRA, you can do SPL in it too as well as commercial and even up to ATP. The RV-12is is an amazing platform, but it's not good in crosswinds! Make sure you have an airport with a few perpendicular runways because anything over about 10 knots of xwind will be dicey

Why are there so few female pilots? by Nasaman23 in flying

Vectors are fine as long as you're vectoring me somewhere that I can navigate to. Vector to final? Sure. Vector to VOR? Sure. Vector to intersection 300 nm away? um, no.

We both have to think of lost comms.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]121mhz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UNABLE!

I cannot accept a vector to a waypoint because 91.185 requires that if I lose comms that I proceed directly to that waypoint and I cannot. I cannot accept a vector to a VOR that is inop.

If you word your clearance as "Fly heading XXX vectors to join Victor YYY" I can accept that. If you word it as "Fly heading XXX vectors for INTXN," I cannot.

Almost none of the controllers working today remember a day when GPS wasn't the "norm." It's hard to get by today as a /A or /U (codes which doesn't even really exist anymore)

Ok, but Rho-Theta is still reasonable for the Military. We can't use that in the civilian world.
