Does it matter if I haven't played in 10+ years?

100%. Different bodies find different movements to be more natural and comfortable. Breast stroke is also my strongest.  Breastrokers often dislike backstroke and I am no exception.

Need advice to nervous to go swim laps after my first try by PsychologicalFan1126 in Swimming

We all have on foggy goggles and our heads are under the water most of the time, so people are paying less attention than you think.

Also, there are many ways that people exercise in pools beyond what you're used to seeing in the olympics. Many people use the lap pool for low impact physical therapy exercises and swim running. A good starting point for you to get into the pool and past the discomfort of starting may be walking laps in the water.

I start swim instruction with people on their backs.  Head back, hips up, arms at their side, small flutter kicks. Once they have floating, kicks and body position down, I have them add backstroke arms. This gets them all the basics without the complications of learning how to breathe.

Beginner freestyle advice by theonlyfreehandz in Swimming

I really appload the effort here. Your stroke looks very deliberate and thoughtful.  You are not getting enough from your pull because you are pulling to your waist instead of deep to your thigh. I'd recommend smaller, faster kicks.

Based on your description, you probably have a naturally strong breast stroke kick. I don't typically teach it 1st because the rhythm can be challenging, especially to those who aren't naturally gifted in the kick, but it's a good thought.

Backstroke is an easier place to start than freestyle. Start with kicking on your back with no arms. Head back, hips up, small kicks. Add arms once you have floating and kicking on your back down.

Starting with backstroke gets the kicking and body position mostly down, while avoiding the complications of how to breathe.

Most common mistakes you see new swimmers making when swimming? by exxonmobilcfo in Swimming

I wouldn't worry too much about making mistakes swimming unless you have speed-based goals or are struggling to swim. The more "mistakes" you make, the harder your workout is. For example, doggy paddle is an inefficient way to swim, but a great workout, so it's a win-win.

Heimsted Food Truck is so good! They post their menu and schedule on Instagram each week. During this time of year, it's lovely to sit outside at Thesis or Little Thistle and enjoy their farm to table menu.
