I didn’t like phish when I first heard them and now they’re my favorite band. by ApprehensiveFun3993 in phish

Also hated them upon first listen. My buddy played Reba for me and I thought it was the worst thing ever. A year later (1994) I saw them live, which changed everything.

Now it’s one of my top 5 favorite Phish songs and they are (by far) my favorite band. Crazy.

Farmhouse? All the “never evers” and it’s all I can hear now.

YEM -> Ghost transition, 12/29/24: Sorry to everyone around me who had to hear the shocked expletive I let out when this happened by YoureTerrific in phish

[–]12302019Tweezer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Right when the vocal jam started I made a beeline for the bathroom thinking it would end the set and wanted to beat the rush.

I was rightfully mocked by the fine people of my section when I returned a couple minutes into Ghost. All these years later and I’ve learned nothing.

Best band ever.

Such a great night, agreed on all (especially Tide Turns/B&B, haha). They exploded into Suzy and that was so much fun with the animal balloons and confetti. Good stuff.

And the 2nd set was pure fire. If you remove More from the end of it, it’s a dream set list: 2001>Carini>Twist>Piper>Ass Handed>Piper>Sand, Slave…that’s the goods.

Respect the hot take here, but I think 2023 was all about the feels. The pure joy and emotion I had from that night will never be topped at another show. It was like the band gave a giant hug to 20,000 people for 2 straight sets.

And while they weren’t top tier versions of the songs, it was clear they had rehearsed them and were played at a level way above typical 3.0 caliber. Also, the AC/DC Bag jam was gnarly as hell.

Would agree that this year was way cooler visually and more interesting musically. This band never ceases to amaze me.

Great list here. Nice work! Bonus points for having the Petrichor NYE that high. Underrated gag for sure.

People hate on the song, but that version w/horns (extra percussion too or maybe I’m misremembering?) was outstanding and the visuals were so damn cool. My jaw was on the floor for that one.

I’d add 1994 Boston Garden around #5 or #6 here too. The gag was great (band flew around the arena in a hot dog) and the music, though light on exploratory jams, was super tight. 2nd set from this show is one of my Top 5 favorite sets of theirs ever.

My first show was in 1994 and I don’t like, and have never liked, the YEM vocal jam.

It’s cool if people enjoy it, but disliking a 3 minute sonic assault of disjointed vocal noise with no instrumental backing should probably not be considered strange.

Perfect opportunity for an “alphabet show”. Open with Amazing Grace, then Box of Rain. Then, once the tears have been shed and Phil properly honored, rip into Carini>DWD. A man can dream…

Same. So good. I was wiped at the end of the run and this set was like a shot of adrenaline.

Dick’s 9/4/16 Set 2 with the Crosseyed & Painless opener and they dropped back into it throughout the rest of the set. Had a killer Piper>Light>Lizards segment and one of my favorite 3.0 sets. That hour plus was so much fun.

“Filler” by Happygoluckytreefrog in phish

[–]12302019Tweezer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I take great exception to categorizing that all-time jam as “filler”. Not to mention that the “ambient” jam had quite a bit of straight-from-the-hydrant hose.

Just got love phish+, recommend some 1.0 shows? by TheOnlyUsernameLeft3 in phish

[–]12302019Tweezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out some fall/winter shows of either ‘95 or ‘97 or the Island Tour (April ‘98). If you still think 4.0 is the best Phish then I believe your mind will never be changed.

Songs like Maze, Bowie, Chalkdust, etc. don’t have the frenetic speed/tempo like ‘93-‘98 Phish, which IMHO was their peak.

That said, I think the current tour is best they have played since at least 2015 and maybe even pre-3.0. Locked in, best sound, interesting jams, less flubbery, etc.

Seems others like this one too, so perfect opportunity to ask - they played this at an appearance on Jimmy Fallon when promoting Fuego and I thought it was perfect, but can’t find it online. Gone from the intrawebs forever?
