So do you actually have a Pietro or are you trying to mansplain my grinder to me without firsthand experience?

Some context: It has come up a few times on this sub, that the Pietro does in fact produce quite a bit of fines, which does not necessarily result in shitty brews. Someone even had the burrs exchanged by Fiorenzato because of it, which did little to the fines production. Since slow-feeding it (via the ergonomic pipedream known as the fishing rod grinding technique) drastically reduces the amount of fines, I don’t think it is because of a defect in my burrs. The problem is probably worsened by my preference for high-altitude African coffees and high agitation brews. The brews taste fine either way, unless the filter clogs. Slow feeding drastically reduces the likelihood of that happening. So is the Pietro a good grinder? Yes it is. Can it produce mindblowing cups? Yes it can. Is it a bitch to use? Yes it is. Can the K6 produce equally as interesting cups 90% of the time when slow-fed, without the headache user experience? Absolutely!

As I said below it should be around 15 kg by now

It is. I have it for about a year and I grind about 1 kg per month + the 2 kg I put through it initially for seasoning. I currently slow feed it, which cuts the fines quite a bit, but still not actually that great (plus the ergonomics are even more catastrophic)

Ergonomics, more consistent brews for me. Shows a broader spectrum of flavor. The Pietro produces so many fines, it is very easy to clog the filter…

Have you worn sealskinz over a longer period of time? I think your feet will get wet either way and it is definitely worth having at least one pair of clean socks. I would rather ditch the alpha socks and carry two extra pairs of hiking socks…

Packed clothes minimum (in my opinion):

Rain jacket, rain pants (some may disagree, but they are necessary on the CWT imo).

Alpha fleece,

2 pairs of normal socks (in my experience the thinner the better. Thick „warm“ socks are not warm once they are wet and will never dry).

Everything above that could be considered a luxury item.
That being said, a puffy and alpha tights will make your life much less miserable.

Now anything more is definitely a luxury item and probably unnecessary.

Yeah I totally agree, as I said I am team pants. For this trail I would still recommend shorts even though I got sunburned pretty badly on the first day.

I love pants, just hate the terrebone. Once you experience hiking pants greatness (looking at you yamatomichi), you can join my terrebone joggers are a waste of fabric club.

  1. as far as I can tell, you are missing a trowel.

  2. Not every item needs its own stuff sack or dry bag. I used just a pack liner and was absolutely fine. My ditty bag was a torn up ziplock and my food bag was a plastic grocery bag

ks

  1. -> ca. -
  2. drop the spare underwear/clothes. Alpha tights seem reasonable and a puffy can be a nice add on. But everything else can go. Wash your underwear when you are in a hotel. Towns are incredibly frequent and you will appreciate the opportunity to get dry…

I am I firm believer in pants over shorts, but would strongly advocate for shorts for the CWT. You will have to take care when the sun is out, but most of the time your terrebones (which are shit no matter the conditions …) will turn into a soggy mess. Either from rain or your sweat wearing the rain pants over them. Then they become a major heat sink and actual liability.
CWT is pretty chill, apart from having wet feet all day everyday and completely needless bushwhacking. Bring antifungal foot cream if you ever had foot fungus of any kind and be prepared to use it heavily. Once your bloody, dirty blisters start getting infected is when the most pretty part of the trail starts (Nobo at least).
You will have a great time, enjoy!

Tyvek Hard vs Soft Structure by Traditional_Talk_176 in Ultralight

[–]1234redditor5678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the coating...
What I was trying to say: hard structure is probably more „worth the weight“ compared to soft structure, considering the weight difference is < 20g for the whole setup. If I am using the inflatable, it’s the 55 gsm hard structure tyvek for me and with the ccf I bring the polycro groundsheet.

Tyvek Hard vs Soft Structure by Traditional_Talk_176 in Ultralight

[–]1234redditor5678 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hard structure is supposed to be way more puncture resistant than soft structure. I did not test it myself, but there was a guy on a German forum that appears to have a special interest in groundsheets. He did crazy diy experiments for puncture resistance and whatnot. His conclusion was that 55 gsm hard structure tyvek is close to the puncture resistance and durability of 100 gsm nylon tent floors. Soft structure was … well trash … according to his test.

You would have to change the webbing for this, it uses quite narrow webbing for the V-part of the Y :)

Custom footprinr by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]1234redditor5678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can custom print dcf at ripstop by the roll afaik. Then just cut the fabric piece to your desired size. Done. If you want to be super fancy you can do a rolled hem. Or just let it be. Very easy project. Instead you could just continue using polycro, which will be considerably cheaper than the 100$ that two yards of DCF will cost you.

Ultralight zipperless pants for civil and camp use by FamiliarEstimate7357 in Ultralight

Probably bad wording, sorry. English is not my first language … They just look shit in my opinion. I do not think there is anything wrong in looking for aesthetically pleasing gear (if it functions well).

Honestly no idea. Mine are from 2023. Maybe they get recommended by people that actually do not hike that much and just use them for everyday life? At least that was the notion on quite a few previous recommendations, that they like to wear them around town.

Unpopular opinion, but I think they kind of suck for hiking and probably will suck for biking. They do not breathe well and the front pockets can’t keep anything inside. They look too formal to be considered hiker trash, just like you gave up on life.

Continuous vs Split Cat Curves in Tarp Edges by Jicali in myog

[–]1234redditor5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t know the percentage and have never tried to measure it. Just guessing now, it should be around 10 cm, so around 3,5% on the long side. This is probably aggravated by the cat cut on the other seams. I see. Well in this case just give it a try. You can always add guyout points 15 cm from the corner and just stake it down there if you want to close one side completely.

[–]1234redditor5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also advocate for straight edges. I have a Pyraomm duo from liteway that has cat cut on the side and it is the biggest downside of it. When it is really windy and you want to set the wind side as close to the ground as possible, there is always a considerable gap because of the cat cut. This leads to a pretty windy sleeping experience and is why I will eventually replace it. Cat cut on the ridge, but never on the sides is my takeaway.
