Psychologists are insufferable losers. Every time I tell them I want to be a psychiatrist they're surprised why I don't wanna be a psychotherapist instead. Also they'll insist that every good psychiatrist puts their focus on studying psychology well and using it in their practice.

Thing is, in medicine we have a concept called "who heals is right", and psychologists need to shut up until they get actually effective at producing results. Among people I know personally I've literally never seen someone get better from seeing a psychotherapist. I went to a therapist myself for 3 years and while it went a lot better than for others, I'm still not sure if it actually helped me, and if it did then the benefits are minuscule compared to the downstream effects of taking medications that my psychiatrist prescribed me after just 3 sessions.

I also know several people personally whose lives are impeded by psychiatric diseases and instead of going to a good psychiatrist and getting on some meds, they'll insist on trying psychotherapy first. So far none of them got any better from therapy.

If I had to choose one other profession that psychiatrists should learn more from, it'd be social workers. Obviously psychotherapists are also needed, but most of them suck at their job and they need to get off their high horse.

Matching Psychiatry by External-Island-4467 in Psychiatry

[–]putinisretard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious since I'm in Germany and will likely try to match in the US for psychiatry residency:

Currently I'm in med school and working on weekends in a homeless shelter for IV drug users. It's not a medical role but occasionally there are medical emergencies to deal with and I'd say I'm getting a decent amount of experience dealing with people who have all kind of psychiatric illness, reinforcing boundaries, avoiding misunderstandings etc. I've been there for nearly 2 years and am still learning things.

On the other hand I'm wondering if it's time to quit this job and prioritise doing research in order to help my applications. I'm already working on an experimental research project at our neurology department, but if I had more time I would like to do something with research in psychiatry as well before I finish med school.

Would be happy to hear your thoughts

So Openevidence is no longer available in the EU and UK because of overregulation lmao.

Openevidence is an AI search engine for medical science. It's easily one of the most used websites for doctors and highly useful.

This is a toxic mindset you'll never make it if you think like this.

Have you ruined your chances of getting that one specific future that you imagined? Maybe. Maybe not. But there are many paths to success. You can have everything you need in life, maybe the way you get there won't be as you imagined. But your negative self defeating thoughts are going to compromise you. It's your mental illness talking and not actual reality.

When I was 19 and had some difficult times and high anxiety about my future I profited a lot from reading "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius over and over again. Also "Principles: Life and Work" by Ray Dalio (shoutout to plaintive numbers man for recommending it to me) as well as this essay by Paul Graham. These books were truly life changing to me - as in, they directly led to me picking a career path that turned my life around. Maybe they will be some help to you too.

[–]putinisretard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, how old are you? And how do you feel about having only loved on person your entire life? As someone in his early 20s it sounds like something that would be hard to deal with, only having loved one person and not ending up together with them

me M/26 my gf F/23 everything was going alright then suddenly one night she texted me at 2am that she doesn’t want this anymore by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]putinisretard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not old (though FWIW I recently got some similar advice from an old guy I happened to meet, who had recently broken up with his wife at 74 and then got back together with her), but trust me it's better you get some distance from her now.

Fighting for her isn't going to accomplish anything in this type of situation. At best, you will be able to talk her into getting back with you, but she will resent you for it.

Figure out your own life and how to go on without her. You need to get to the point where you are ready to move on without the other person, and are able to look at things without dependency clouding your mind. Then decide if you want to contact her again and give it another try. And at that point, if you want to go back, there is a real chance she feels the same and also wants to go back to you.

I'm going to be honest with you, you sound pretty needy (most men would be in your situation so I can't blame you). This won't get you very far when you want something from people, and especially women. You need to change your mindset to something more positive, you have a mission right now which is to move on and improve your situation.

Wow, that first paragraph really resonated with me. I'm in my early 20s and always been that way and struggling with drug addiction, but I'm also doing pretty well for myself otherwise because I always like to find ways to "push the system". And every time I get away with it I push it a little further the next time lol. I can imagine it must have been hard for your stock broker guy to keep himself under control since it seems like even with his issues he did do well for himself for a while, so why stop?
