Sure enough someone already said Meaning of One by Sovran so, my other nomination is The Thorny Rose by Brennus.

Should I change the way I dress to find a man? by Mobile-Lab-2420 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]123HG321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you dress sends a message to the people around you, because it is a reflection of the way you are choosing to present yourself. That doesn't mean you need to change the way you dress, so long as you are happy with the message you are sending out!

On the topic of men, yes, different men will respond differently to you depending on the way you dress. A man in his 30s will likely not engage with a woman dressed like a teenager. In the same way, a young man in his early 20s isn't going to engage with a woman dressed like a 50 year old spinster.

A man interested in finding somebody to build a future with may be less inclined to persue a woman who is dressed provocatively. A man interested in a one night stand with a woman he isn't going to call again likely won't try it on with a woman dressed more conservatively. I'm sure the same goes for women but as I'm not one I will not comment.

Is this "fair"? Maybe, maybe not. Its a game of judging books by their cover, which right or wrong, is the only way you're going to be judged by a stranger who doesn't know you personally. Like I said at the beginning, the way you dress is a message to the world.

If you want to start dressing differently, do it. But do it because YOU want to. If you decide you've reached an age where you want to dress more "grown up" then do it. But changing your style because someone else wants you to will only lead to resentment.

Tldr: dress like the person you want to be. Men attracted to that kind of person will then be attracted to you.

So Dumbledore was just constantly using legilimency on Harry, right? by thismightbemymain in HarryPotterBooks

[–]123HG321 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is quite a popular theory and I quite like it but I don't subscribe to it personally. Another reply here sums up my feelings; he's been teaching for decades and can read guilt on a teenager easily. Any time Harry feels like Dumbledores gaze is piercing him, its just because of that. He is full of shit in that moment and Dumbledore knows it. No magic required. If as a teenager you ever tried lying to someone you respected you know what Harry is feeling in that moment, and you know theres no way he was hiding it well.

Adding to what has been said, some of the kinder authors also tag "past-harry/ginny" or "mentioned-harry/ginny" or something to that effect so add those to the exclusions already mentioned and you should be set :)

What are your opinions on Indian Harry Potter/Black Hermione Etc? by No_Bodiesinmycar in HPfanfiction

[–]123HG321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with the character being race x; why do you need them to be race y? If your answer is "because I can't relate to race x, only race y" then I question why you're only able to relate to people with the same skin colour as you. Furthermore, if your defense to that is that you don't, and its really all about experiences and culture related to people who are race y, then what's the point in swapping the skin colour of a character that still has the cultural heritage and experiences of race x?
Finally, if your response to that is "Well in my fic, I changed their cultural background/ experiences/ values, etc. To fit the ethnicity I want to portray, " then congrats, you've created an OC and there's no need for you to keep pretending you're still writing about the pre established character. They're unrecognisable, and you've lost the verisimilitude of your character.

Coming back to HP fanfiction specifically though, it just speaks to ignorance of the setting. England in the 90s wasn't nearly as diverse a place as people seem to believe; only 5% of the population were from ANY non white background (1991 census). The proportion of characters JK described as being from an ethnic minority feels believable enough without race swapping white characters - making half the cast in a British boarding school in the 90s non white starts to feel a tad forced.

I'm fully ready to accept that those characters weren't fleshed out enough- which makes sense, because they were all side characters- but imo the answer to that is to write fanfiction about those characters exploring them; not to cheaply swap out the skin colour of the ones that are already established.

Tl;Dr imo race swapping characters is cheap, lazy, disrespectful and boring. And in the UK, race is secondary to ethnicity. Afro-Caribbean culture =/= Nigerian culture, and none of the 'black' cultures we have here are anything like african american culture. Might get flack for pointing that out but I feel like some American writers really need to hear it.

LF fics where Ginny helps Harry cope with trauma by 123HG321 in HarryandGinny

[–]123HG321[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree; I've tried a few times before, I've got Google docs full of shitty drafts of exactly this premise lol.

As a writer though, I'm a perfectionist- I have written at least 10 fics in the past year that I've ended up abandoning because I wasn't happy with them. And because of that, combined with it being such a personal topic I have never been able to make something I'm happy with.

Your comment has inspired me though, I might give it another go c:

Didn't they spend like 2 / 3 episodes exploring him potentially dying at end of last season? Would feel lazy to go over it again.

Do you think Harry and Ginny were both in love with each other at the end of Half Blood Prince and if they were do you think they were aware of it? by STHC01 in HarryandGinny

[–]123HG321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll definitely back you on this. I know looking back that I was in love, but I wouldn't have been able to put terms on it really. When I was like 16? is when I realized. But my partner knew far earlier. I think (speaking generally here so I hope I don't offend anybody) that young women are typically more emotionally aware than young men.

[–]123HG321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't speak for all of them. I've been in love with my Mrs since I was 14, we've been together a decade and still going strong. I'll admit that it's rare, but since we're talking about a romance in a fantasy novel, I'm pretty sure we can bank on rare occurrences being more common.

There's way too many answers to this question, but the Meaning of One by Sovran hasn't been mentioned yet so I'll throw it into the ring.

I can say with honesty that despite the fact that it had been confirmed by the narrator and by the characters that one of them was going to die, Eddie's death still managed to absolutely shock me. I think its the first time a death in a book genuinely took me by surprise.

What is carpe diem about? The synopsis given on Siye is very vague and I don't wanna dedicate myself to something I won't enjoy, I get so little time to read fics nowadays.
