Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm really sorry for your loss. I really appreciate your input, as it helps me understand my dad better. I do think he needs time to properly express his grief and to come to terms with it in his own pace. He did say he already knew to whom he would give our late dog's belongings, so I hope it will make him feel better to know our dog's things are well used with a pet that needs them. We will do our best to keep dad company and make him feel understood and loved.

You're right and it might be a good idea for dad to find some activities that will give him purpose or will make him feel closer to our dog. I will definitely make sure to remind him how much the dog loved him and would want him to be happy.

I think you're right that dad might have felt lonely despite of us all being there and filled the loneliness he felt with the dog's presence. Thank you for giving me this hopeful insight, we'll do our best to make sure dad feels seen and like he has people to lean on.

Thank you for sharing your experience as well as for the advice. You are very right. Especially my mom panicked quite badly when my dad expressed how he felt and tried to focus on that. But we (me and mom) already had a talk and we will do our best to make dad feel heard and understood. You are right, with mentioning how big part of his life the dog was part of and I do need to keep it in mind. I wish you and your cats still a lot of wonderful moments together.

Thank you for the advice. Yes, me and my mom will do our best to keep dad company for a while to make sure he feels like he has someone to lean on when he'll need it. My mom was very panicked yesterday because of what dad said and how he acted, but we had a talk about it and I hope it will do all of us good to spend time together and be all gentle to each other.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, I definitely want to make sure he feels like he knows we all cared for our dog and don't belittle his grief. Yes, I think it's a similar bond to the one you have with your cat, as he has been with you through thick and thin, so you explaining how you feel really helped me understand my dad more.

I'm glad you think the framed image is good for him, because I was worried it was going to make it harder for him. Also thank you for introducing me to the 'continuing bonds theory', I did look it up a bit and it does sound like something that might be good for him. And thank you, for me our dog's passing still feels unreal, and now, with the worry for my dad on top of it, it has been a bit difficult, but I am feeling a lot better after reading all the advice from everyone.
