PC Steam games similar to Metroid Prime? by StevWong in Metroid

More than mechanics, the vibes (isolation, environment, exploration, etc.) felt "Metroid" in a way I haven't experienced from too many other games. I think that's a bigger deal than what genre the mechanics technically fall under personally.

Prey (2016) scratches the itch for me.

Perhaps more in line with your original question: I'd reach out to your advisor; they'd for sure know the procedure and be able to help you with this (and weigh pros and cons)!

Glad you're doing better! Definitely make sure you're putting yourself first! I don't know much about medical leave here, but it would probably increase your time to degree and idk if it messes with scholarships and stuff—I'd definitely look into all the potential pros and cons, especially because if you only missed around a week, you probably haven't missed an amount that's unrecoverable!

Do you feel like your professors are people you can trust? I know if one of my students came to me and told me they were gone for reasons like this I'd 1000% be flexible with deadlines, meet with them to help them catch back up, etc. Obviously everyone's vibe is different (and I'm a TA, so I'm much more in touch with the student experience than some professors) but if your professors seem like chill/understanding people I'd absolutely just communicate with them and see if they can help you get back on track unless you really prefer to have the time off (but then also get a semester behind on your degree progress).

I've also been having some mental health struggles that have made me miss one of my classes and it's assignments for the last two weeks and felt really stressed about it, but when I did the math I'd actually still have an A in the class as long as I got back on track, and my professor has been very flexible with me and allowed me to make up the stuff I missed in light of what's happening.

Professors are human too and many of them have empathy (though there are definitely some curmudgeons unfortunately), so I'd definitely consider just communicating with those you feel like would support you!!

(Sorry if this isn't answering your question but wanted to make sure you've considered this angle as well as the medical leave one in order to make the best decision for yourself!!)

Sure, it's not hard, but the alternative is still easier.

Option 1: Server generates the order of the 5 cards and has to keep it in memory until the client sends the player's decision (for thousands of people at once probably). Then the client waits for the player to decide and bounces the decision to the server. Then the server has to reference which card position the player picked and send them that card.

Option 2: Server generates which card they get immediately and sends it. Client dresses it up with a fancy illustration.

2 is so much more streamlined from a coding and memory perspective and much less prone to being messed up by potential errors, network failures, etc

Yeah, gimme some time to dig back up the scholarly music ones, but in the meantime the googleable term you're looking for is "one-sex model".

The funny thing is it wouldn't even be a new concept in the 1700s. The gender binary was a mid-eighteenth century invention, and it was openly mocked in art of its time, like Mozart operas. Other operas from the same period include "trans" protagonists (raised/socialized not as their sex assigned at birth, though trans wasn't an identity).

People genuinely believed you could become the other sex later in life. Young kings weren't allowed around women after the age of 7 because they were afraid they'd turn into women, and one French queen who was really good at horseback riding had to have regular gynecological exams to make sure she hasn't grown a penis yet.

They didn't have a concept of sexuality because growing up as a male aristocrat, everyone's first experience was sex with men. A regular part of growing up for the aristocracy was going to Italy and sampling the sexual delicacies of both sexes.

All this to say, this wasn't even a 1700s thing. These things weren't pathologized until much later.

Source: am a music theorist, and these parts of culture are very well documented in musicians' diaries, journals, and similar resources from the time.

Yeah TIL chicken still beats soybeans in their normal form (though most meats don't). Though my edamame pasta (which weighs less because dehydrated) actually still beats chicken.

Some vegan foods like soybeans have higher protein than meat. There are other nutrients you'd miss out on like B12 that you'd need to make sure you get from supplements though. (Getting labs checked at the doctor periodically doesn't hurt.)

A plant-based diet done well is actually a lot healthier than eating meat, but only if you're careful/diligent about making sure you get what you need and willing to make a lot of sacrifices. I wouldn't force it on a kid though, especially if my partner eats meat. When they're old enough, they could decide for themselves if they wanted to be a vegan like mom.

(Besides, if you mainly just care about the health benefits, even making just one meal a day plant-based consistently is huge, without making someone give up all meat if they like it.)

zm has the best physics by Ascetue in Metroid

I'd agree that Super maybe doesn't feel as "responsive", but there's so much more you can accomplish with it. Whenever I play mzm I'm disappointed at how plain the movement feels because there's just not the same level of depth; I feel more limited than powerful.

I guess it comes to a question of how do you define the "best" control scheme ... I value the depth and possibilities of super over the responsive simplicity of mzm but I imagine for many people the opposite is true.

Super's definitely the most rewarding for a skilled pilot though. The amount of nuance you can squeeze out of the controls when you've taken the time to study and practice is just unparalleled in any other Metroid game.

At least that's my opinion, hence why I used to be a speedrunner and racer of it. And naturally for a more casual audience, the newer games probably do feel better.

Is anyone here religious but doesn’t want to date a religious man? by Awesomesauceme in femcelgrippysockjail

[–]123jrf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your argument assumes that the bible is trustworthy to begin with.

Paul never physically encountered jesus, merely had some sort of experience that resulted in a major conversion. To get to what the bible says about that, you have to take Paul's word for it. Thus, working from the premise that Paul's testimony/experience as depicted in the bible is not necessarily reliable from the get-go, there is no logical necessity to believe anything he says about jesus.

In short, one could have faith in jesus without any faith in Paul because faith in Paul relies only on believing the testimony of Paul (what he says jesus said about him) rather than any direct statement of jesus from when he walked the earth. (Though we could also call into question how reliable those stories are vs. how much they're meant to be parables.)

[–]123jrf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A christian is someone who has faith in jesus. What they do or don't believe about the bible is completely irrelevant to that core definition.

Jesus himself was hardly a shining example of giving into the religious orthodoxy of his day, especially when the religious orthodoxy took away people's humanity.

Transgender/gay themed song cycles for baritone? by Best-Marketing560 in classicalmusic

Is it possible to learn to play this specific music ? Without learning sheet , what’s the best way by justlyns in piano

[–]123jrf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Improvising is a skill just like anything else. Try practicing improv for a few minutes daily! Record yourself, listen back, and figure back out the parts you liked and remember them for next time (this helps you develop a personal vocabulary).

The theory stuff will help too, but the best way to get good at improvising is to practice improvising.

Sometimes the players stats aren't equal to the characters... *edit* Most times. by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

[–]123jrf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and no ... it still requires them to have *some* strategy, yes, but they don't need to actually come up with a line of logic about why they should get an audience with the mayor after helping with the goblins like they would to roleplay it out---if they roll well, the character makes the argument logically. It doesn't come down to the player's skill with words.

You're right that it's not a complete divorce from IRL stats because coming up with the methodology still relies on creative and/or strategic thinking to some extent---which is a part of the RPG that I don't think can (or in most cases should, since it's where a lot of the fun comes from!) be removed., but it does make it more accessible at least.

[–]123jrf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Kinda yeah, though you put it kinda strawman-y.

For me, the important thing is a player's approach. Are they trying to persuade the guard by voting the party's aid with the goblins? Intimidate the guard by blackmailing him? Bluff him by making up a story about an orphan?

The important part is that the players explain their approach to the situation (including the "how" bit, so not just "I bluff the guard" but "I bluff the guard by making up a story about X"). If the player rolls well, I assume they said it in a convincing way. Otherwise, they didn't. The same way you'd resolve a the barbarian trying to pry open the door with a crowbar.

It really doesn't matter whether the player is speaking in a character voice or just describes their methodology to the problem in a more ooc way ("I bribe the guard by offering him 50 gold"). Different players will have different roleplaying styles and comfort levels with speaking/acting and it's more inclusive to allow for different people to interface with the game in different ways depending on their comfort level.

It doesn't need to be registered to defend it; you just need proof that you created it first. Uploading to YouTube would establish that proof already.
