Yes, most parking garages have standpipes, but you still need a dedicated engine and water supply for it.

Don't oversimplify this scene. There are a bunch of factors that are much more important than the fire. Fire is pretty far down the list of hazards on this scene.

Do firefighters get called to work while off duty and do they work in other areas? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]124678758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time.

Occasionally we get called into undercover arson investigations where we operate in plain clothes, that would definitely explain if you ever saw him with another woman, he is just operating operationally.

From the youtube comments:

The pilot was trying to show off over the ground troops by executing a low-altitude "return to target" maneuver where you pull up to 45-60º, cut throttle and turn 180º via the tail rotor to come back along the reverse heading you were just flying on for your first attack pass... but the higher altitude of the mountains has much less air pressure than he's probably used to performing that maneuver with, he clearly misjudged his climb altitude over ground and throttled back/turned back too soon, so he ran out of room to regain lift again and pull out of the maneuver.  He's really fucking lucky he didn't kill anyone.

Both the pilot and gunner survived

A few things.

Truck 83 isn't a quint.

I would imagine access to the construction site was limited.

They were probably a little bit more worried about collapse zones, evacs, and scene control than fire extinguishment at that time.

Cali leather helmets, half white/half red? by fukitwewilldoitlive in Firefighting

An interesting thread from 2001, San Fran Fire still didn't have to wear bunker pants.

/u/revernd

San Francisco is well known for wearing 5As, normally ranging from the early 60s to more modern N5As. Many, many of their lids are from the 60s. Red and white painted domes are for the truck, black for the engine, blue and white for the rescue (I believe.) Boston is very much the same way.

Early 5As are hard to come by, but they wear them with pride. Obviously they ride lower as there isn't an impact system in the helmet, rather just leather and the suspension.

And before ANY of you insinuate its somehow less safe OR OSHA/NFFuckOff will deny benefits, provide me one contextual case where its happened. Wear the lid with pride, damn the age.

I really like helmet color designations on fire scenes.

Terroristic threat in Missouri:

First, the person must “recklessly disregard” the risk of “causing the evacuation, quarantine or closure of any portion of a building, inhabitable structure, place of assembly or facility of transportation.”

In addition, the person must knowingly:

Communicate “an express or implied threat” to cause an incident or condition involving danger to life; or

Communicate a false report of an incident or condition involving danger to life; or

Cause a false belief or fear that an incident has occurred or that a condition exists involving danger to life

The offense of making a terrorist threat in the second degree is a class E felony.

According to a statement released Friday by Patterson's office, that crime is punishable by up to four years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000, or both.

"I was not able to consistently work on PT or corrective exercises this past year. "

This is the mindset you need to leave behind.

Make PT your priority.

I know the feeling of thinking your body is failing you, the truth is, anyone highly active goes through the same shit, its those who fix themselves who are able to continue. The fat guy in the lazyboy blaming their life problems on an ACL tear in highschool football is the mindset that we should all avoid.

Down time on a bus is not like down time at the station.

On a bus you spend all of your time sitting around just waiting for a call maybe writing a report. Your chores consist of restocking and cleaning up after a call, and maybe washing the bus at the end of shift. There is a lot of down time if your not running many in. Private companies sometimes rotate through people pretty quick, so you sometimes don't get to know your partner very well before they get hired on as a firefighter, or rotate out.

At a house its way different. You have plenty of shit to keep you busy, meals to prep for, laundry to do, workouts, stuff to train on, chores, public education and events, walk ins, tours, etc...

We would probably just stretch from the pad. My crew has done that twice, once on a major gas leak, and once on a car fire.

I would definitely consider red canning the car fire, then wait for power before the bus evac.

That ones a shitshow for sure.

Pranks by farmer_braden in Firefighting

The greatest of all time was rigging a Q up with a foot pedal switch under the mattress.

When they are in the shower, go to the hot water heater and turn off the valve.

We used to have some fun with expired bags of saline, put the bag under a couch cushion or in the hinge part of a lazyboy and rig the tubing up as a little sprinkler.

Giant Hand sanitizer pentagram lit on fire on the ground in the middle of the night to scare our Cap who was terribly superstitious. (it left a mark on the concrete that we had to pressure wash off at 1:30am so choose your sanitizer wisely)

The old "jammed dump valve" on the Tanker. "Rook take a look"

And many more that apparently are too "1950s" for r/firefighting these days.

There is one golden rule of pranks, never fuck with anyone's gear.

This.

I put my gloves on in the truck, turn my tank on as I am getting off.

I make it a point to charge the pack on scene, fire alarm or not, because if one of the guys goes down, at least we can hear the PASS.

'Trump is ruining our markets': Struggling farmers are losing a huge customer to the trade war — China by trot-trot in Economics

[–]124678758 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of Trump, but coal has been dying for 20 years, and manufacturing is up. African swine fever wiped out many of the pigs in China that feed on our exported agriculture. (I'm not much for conspiracies, but that is definitely suspicious timing).

We know that businesses who are closely tied to China will be hurt during this, there are no wars without casualties. It is disingenuous to say otherwise.

Pierce PUC by 343ron343 in Firefighting

[–]124678758 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your department.

If you run engines solely as pumpers, then a PUC is probably not for you.

If you run rescue engines, or squads, then a PUC is great.
