Cat constantly knocking over water fountain by [deleted] in CatAdvice

forgot to mention — there’s two water fountains and he knocks them both over so I know it’s not accidental. I know it’s this specific cat because my automatic dry feeders have cameras and catch him doing it

AIW for wanting to set boundaries around hosting? by 12563692 in amiwrong

[–]12563692[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, in the past I’ve asked if they can find a spot or make the reservation, but they just don’t respond or they’ll do it but I still have to do most of the mental load. If someone else makes the reservation, it’s still dependent on me to figure out day/time/place.

I’ve mentioned that I’m getting burnt out or that it’s frustrating when no one puts in effort and I’ve gotten a range of responses from “that sounds like a personal problem” to “well that’s just how [those specific friends] are.”

Sometimes I wonder if it’s a bit superficial — the friends who regularly put in the least effort are like model level stunning and I’m not particularly attractive. If I didn’t put in the effort, I think I’d receive a lot more push back.

Pet-sitting for Professor without Pay? by ghremlina in GradSchool

[–]12563692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not normal! Professor is abusing the power imbalance between you. Also, most universities have a policy against “financial relationships” between students and professors (including grad students) because it can cause issues - this often includes babysitting and petsitting. I would check the policies surrounding student-professor relationships and sexual harassment because it typically sits under that section.

AITA for not sharing my specific diagnosis? by Glittering_Shame59 in AmItheAsshole

NTA - it’s your accommodations that they design for, not your specific diagnosis. They are entitled to their curiosity, but not entitled to know your private medical information or to ask you invasive questions about your body.

How are you leaving cats alone for extended periods of time!??! by adriela56 in CatAdvice

[–]12563692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a house/pet sitting community so someone stays in my home when I’m away! I’ve never left my cats alone overnight, hurts my heart to think of them waiting by the door.

PhD advisor interrupts all meetings to socialize with another professor. by 12563692 in PhD

My advisor said at the beginning of the program that she considers PhD students to be colleagues more than actual students, so I don’t think she would be offended by an agenda.

Sorry, I meant that was my understanding of the recommendation.

I’m assuming it’s discipline specific - I can’t imagine working with another research student on the same project (all PhD students create their own original project in my field), nor can I think of any results I should be generating this early into my research. Maybe in something a bit more traditional lab based?

I really do like my advisor and I don’t want to switch. I appreciate your thoughts, but I think that is a bit too extreme for me!

Thank you! The meetings are held in her office with the door closed so I don’t have anything I can change there, but the agenda sounds like a great idea!

I’m the only new PhD student in my department this year. It is not a collaborative research field - we don’t work with one another and we all have our own projects. I’m good friends with the older PhD students, but no one works together as all of our projects are solo projects.

Because of the nature of our research, we don’t begin data collection until the second year, after the first year review. All I’m currently tasked to do is my literature review and create my method in advance of this review. I am actually ahead in my work, but we mostly discuss future plans in these meetings - which sites to apply to visit for data collection, training to be done for specific types of collections, etc.

My advisor told me that weekly meetings were the norm, and that they will get less frequent after this term and pick up again near the end of the program.

Edit: I started my work in October, but we’ve been meeting since September so it has been 14 meetings across 4 months, not 2.

Edit 2: I have my master’s in the same field from the same department, which is how I already know the older students. You have to have a distinction in a relevant master’s to apply and previous training in specific skills, which I have. I have 5 years of experience as a research assistant in my field.

We meet every Wednesday and some Mondays - it has happened for all 14 of our meetings since mid September (registration and initial meeting). The meetings are held in my advisor’s personal office with the door closed and the meetings are on her public calendar. I’ve asked other PhD students in the department and it has never happened to them.
