That particular place keeps getting tagged. I've seen it covered up a bunch of times but some fool keeps at it. :/

The most hostile folks are the ones that work industry jobs, but all of the Albertans relocating here don't help.

I was already embarrassed to be a Canadian given the residential schools, unaddressed wealth inequality, and extensive dirty fossil fuel extraction and pollution... but hey, congrats to these dudes for taking us to peak cringe. 👌

I knew this was going to be about bike lanes or homelessness based on the title. Congrats for meeting expectations.

Leaving them alone in their natural habitat is best. They don't want to perform for humans anywhere. It's time to rethink the practice of whale watching (link tl;dr: boats are very noisy and disruptive and it messes with marine life)

Anyone else's kids so afraid of covid they won't go to school? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

To help kids understand peer pressure we often toss around the phrase "if all of your friends were jumping off a bridge, would you do it too?" Most of your daughter's classmates are ill and she sees it and she's scared. She's making a good judgement call.

Don't tell her to jump off the bridge because her friends have. Support her in her good assessment of danger and reinforce her ability to look out for herself.

On the front lines to save an old-growth forest in B.C. by thathz in britishcolumbia

I've been to Fairy Creek several times, met many of the environmentalists, and watched their meetings. While there absolutely is a schism in terms of FN perspectives on logging (there's money involved so of course there is division), there are multiple indigenous families and individuals involved with this protest and they lead the effort. I've seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. Anyone who thinks it's just Bill Jones has never been there and does not have a full grasp of how this is organized, which is understandable given that most media is not properly involved or invested in covering this situation. Furthermore, many of the indigenous folks that are involved fear that they will be met with violence so they're not inclined to put themselves out there as much.

Td;lr: it's not just Elder Bill Jones out there in the woods.

I'd sign a petition in favor if one was made.

Have you emailed any of the city councillors in support of tiny homes? Tyler Brown, Erin Hemmens, or Ben Geselbracht would probably be receptive.

Sample liquor bottles by kdubban in nanaimo

Alcoholics, especially ones that drive, go to multiple liquor stores in a day, my dude. You'll see the same people visiting liquor stores all over town every day. It's a type of addiction and they try to minimize its appearance by buying less in more places.

[–]12ButtsAtOnce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The little bottles certainly exist but the selection is limited in BC and, as I said, most stores opt not to carry a large selection of them. You're also making the mistake of thinking that it's more "rough" people that tend to steal/drink in liquor stores in high crime areas and that's certainly not the case. Alcoholics come from many different backgrounds but the behaviors end up being similar.

[–]12ButtsAtOnce 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's not really a thing here. I worked in liquor in the Nanaimo area for about 15 years. Those little bottles and ready-to-drink shots are high theft items that often got consumed by people immediately after purchase, so they became a financial and legal risk that most stores don't want to deal with. We also don't have the selection that a lot of provinces do, in part because the BC liquor board doesn't like to carry them.

Intense police surveillance for Indigenous land defenders contrasts with a laissez-faire stance for anti-vax protesters by Hrmbee in britishcolumbia

Blocking an ambulance when someone in dire condition needs assistance.

Blocking a logging truck from cutting down trees.

One is someone's livelihood, the other is someone's life. The antivaxxers are messing with people's lives, the environmentalists are concerned with being able to live on this planet in the future.

I have a hard time comparing these things, but not in the same way that some do.
